Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 113
Paxton grinned. "I'm just telling you this in private. I trust you, Ms. Turner. You're not the type to spread things around."
Hearing this, it felt like Paxton and I were on the same team. No way was I going to blab about it.
Besides, I was not one to gossip, especially not about Christopher.
"But Paxton, even though you think highly of me, I've never done this kind of work before. I'm really worried I might not be able to handle it." I was still hesitant.
"Ms. Turner, don't worry. I've talked to folks in your department, and they all say you do your work diligently and well. I've also reviewed your translations, and they're even better than I expected."
"Your expertise, the investment projects you've worked on, these are all impressive. Plus, you can translate, which makes you a rare talent. I'll help you get familiar with the assistant's duties for a few days, and once you get the hang of it, you'll find it's much simpler than you think."
"Ms. Turner, please consider this carefully. You know Mr. Collins well, and when he's sick, he's even more wary of others. The fact that he allowed you to take care of him shows his familiarity and trust in you."
Paxton's words were increasingly persuasive.
Of course, I'd be happier if he hadn't mentioned the night I took care of Christopher when he was sick.
Paxton spoke quickly, and honestly, working closely with a top executive was one of the fastest ways to learn and grow. It might be stressful, but the growth would be remarkable.
"I'll think about it, but I might need some time." I was wavering, so I gave Paxton this answer.
Paxton's face lit up. "Of course, that's your right, Ms. Turner. If you decide, please let me know as soon as possible so I can help you get familiar with the job and start quickly."
Clearly, he was eager to leave and take care of his family.
Over the next few days, I thought about it a lot.
I knew that being an assistant to Christopher would look great on my resume, even if I didn't stay in that role forever. The experience and skills I'd gain would be invaluable.
Despite the slight awkwardness from that night and Christopher's usual stern demeanor, the benefits outweighed the drawbacks.
So, I decided to become Christopher's assistant.
I told Paxton my decision directly.
Paxton was thrilled and took me to the CEO's office the next day to report in.
As we walked through the office, many colleagues noticed. The news of a new intern being promoted to Mr. Collins' assistant spread quickly.
Some were jealous, some didn't understand, some were happy for me, and some envied my luck.
The CEO's office had two other assistants, Vincent Woods and Glenn Cole. They were both friendly and seemed easy to get along with.
They were also trained by Paxton, so they respected him and, by extension, treated me well.
Another reason for their kindness was that I was the only woman.
I remembered the interview day when someone mentioned that even Mr. Collins' dogs were male. It seemed exaggerated then, but now it made sense.
After introducing me to my colleagues, Paxton personally took me to meet Christopher.
I hadn't seen Christopher in a while.
Today, he wore gold-rimmed glasses, a white shirt, and a black suit, exuding a cold, commanding presence that made him even more attractive.
I couldn't help but steal a few extra glances, trying to make up for the days I hadn't seen him.
Paxton brought me to Christopher and left immediately.
Christopher's sudden words brought me back to reality.
"I don't demand perfection, but if you're working with me, I expect you to be meticulous and thoughtful. Paxton had to leave quickly due to family matters, so you need to get up to speed fast. Don't disappoint me, and avoid making basic mistakes. Especially, don't repeat any mistakes."
When Christopher talked about work, his demeanor changed, becoming authoritative and unquestionable.
I quickly responded, "Mr. Collins, I will be diligent and attentive."
"And use your brain!"
"Yes!"
As his direct subordinate, I had to follow his rules and respond accordingly.
Even though his comment about using my brain felt like an insult, I held back.
Over the next week, Paxton trained me on the job. I quickly got the hang of organizing files, scheduling, and preparing Christopher's coffee and tea. Paxton praised my work several times.
I could tell Christopher appreciated my efforts too. This meant he was satisfied with my performance.
In the following week, I familiarized myself with Christopher's travel arrangements, including his clothes, ties, and watches, without any mistakes.
Honestly, working with Christopher was stressful at first, but I adapted. He was strict about work, but my resilience paid off, and Paxton praised my understanding and skills.
Paxton felt confident leaving to take care of his family. I shared all this with Paula.
When Paula heard I was now Christopher's assistant, she was shocked and teased me.
"Melinda, breaking up with that jerk really turned your luck around. Such a rare opportunity, and it happened to you. How did Paxton's family issues come up just in time, and why did he choose you to be Christopher's assistant?"
"Didn't you say Mr. Collins only has male dogs? Now you can see if he really has a preference or if he's just very selective."
I thought of Christopher's abs and blurted out, "He's probably just very selective. Otherwise, those abs would be wasted." It would be a shame if no girl got to appreciate them.
Paula was stunned and screamed over the phone, "Melinda, what's going on? How do you know Christopher has abs? Did you touch them? Spill the beans!"
I remembered Paula had been busy with a business trip and hadn't had time to respond to my messages. I had planned to tell her, but she was too busy.
"I didn't tell you? A few weeks ago, Christopher got sick, and..." I told her everything about Paxton asking me to help.
