My heart started pounding like crazy.

His warm breath was so close to my face, I couldn't even look at him.

"Mr. Collins, Ms. Turner, sorry about that sudden braking. Are you both okay?"

The driver's concerned voice snapped me out of my chaotic thoughts.

I quickly pushed Christopher away and pretended to straighten my clothes calmly. "No, no problem."

I stole a glance at Christopher. Sure enough, compared to my childish reaction, he was much more composed, his face calm as if nothing had happened.

He simply said to the driver, "It's fine. Just drive carefully."

The driver sighed in relief, and the car resumed its smooth journey.

Thankfully, it wasn't long before we arrived at my house. I grabbed my box and hurried out of the car, not even looking back at Christopher, feeling a bit guilty.

After getting out, I heard the car drive away. I slowed my pace, patted my face, and gradually calmed down.

I needed to learn from Christopher's calm demeanor. I had a lot to learn!

After all the commotion and the flight, I was exhausted and didn't have the energy to pick up Sunny, so I decided to leave it for now.

The next morning, I drove to the office.

As soon as I entered, I noticed some strange looks from my colleagues.

Passing by a cubicle area, I overheard two coworkers whispering, seemingly unaware of my presence.

"The rumors are true. Some people really know how to get what they want. Mr. Collins, of all people, got seduced by her?"

"Mr. Collins isn't that shallow. She must be really good at what she does. And her ex-husband was no good either, but he's out of the picture now. She's ruthless, causing such a scene."

I caught snippets of Christopher's name. The women around him were either me or Marlowe, and the one with an ex-husband was me. These people really had nothing new to gossip about. The rumors had been flying since I was Christopher's only female assistant. How long ago was that? Why bring it up again?

I didn't realize the seriousness of the situation at that moment.

I returned to my desk and started catching up on the work I had missed. Two hours flew by, and I got up to go to the restroom.

In the restroom, I overheard the truth.

"So Ms. Turner is really with Mr. Collins? If she was that capable, why couldn't she handle her ex-husband, who wasn't even as good as Mr. Collins?"

"I can't believe Mr. Collins got seduced by a woman like her. If I had known, I would have tried myself. Maybe Mr. Collins has been single because he's too good, and girls are intimidated. So Ms. Turner succeeded by approaching him first."

"Mr. Collins does seem different with Ms. Turner. I heard about that guy harassing her..."

The more they talked, the more they rehashed old stories, even bringing up Alan.

I was the victim, and Christopher defended me because I was an employee. What was wrong with that?

Then I vaguely heard something about a grave and a lawyer. Curious, I was about to step out and confront them when a cough stopped me.

A familiar voice followed.

It was the receptionist, who I got along with well.

"Instead of gossiping about Mr. Collins, why don't you focus on your work? Summit Innovations Group doesn't like people who spread rumors, especially about Mr. Collins's private life."

"And are you sure about what you're saying? Did you see it with your own eyes? Let me tell you, Mr. Collins isn't like that. Even if he defends Ms. Turner, isn't that what he should do?"

"As women, wouldn't you want your boss to stand up for you if you were harassed at work? Mr. Collins has always been good to his employees. You don't know this because you're new, but once, a security guard's family member was seriously ill. Mr. Collins found out and not only gave him a raise but also arranged for the best hospital and provided a job for his family member after recovery."

I didn't know Christopher had done such good deeds.

The more I learned, the more I admired him. He truly meant it when he said he would support his employees.

"Yes, yes, we were wrong!" The two coworkers, embarrassed, quickly apologized and left.

I heard the receptionist about to leave, so I hurried out and called her.

"Thank you for defending me and Mr. Collins!" I said sincerely.

She seemed embarrassed.

"No need to thank me. I was just telling the truth. Don't let their words affect you. Mr. Collins is really a good person." She seemed worried I might distance myself from Christopher and tried to explain.

I knew she was a long-time employee, or she wouldn't have had the courage to confront those coworkers.

"I won't!" I smiled and nodded.

I then asked, "I noticed people looking at me strangely today. Did something happen? I heard something about a magazine. Does it involve me?"

She looked surprised but then seemed to understand.

"It's just an inappropriate magazine article. Don't worry about it. I need to get back to my desk." She quickly left.

But her words caught my attention.

A magazine made me think of one person: Marlowe.

I suddenly remembered our conversation on the plane. She mentioned Beatrice and Lawrence's family causing trouble and even brought me up. Could it be related?

Soon, my suspicions were confirmed.
