Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 39
Lawrence gripped my shoulder tightly and retorted sarcastically, "You don't need to worry about that. Melinda is my wife, and I will naturally take good care of her. There's no need to trouble an outsider like you."
Christopher chuckled lightly, "I wouldn't consider myself an outsider. I'm practically Kyle's son and have lived with the Turner Family. I'm just concerned, Mr. Phillips, with your busy schedule, can you manage your time well?"
If it weren't for the current situation, where I was the most awkward person in the middle, I would have applauded Christopher.
Isn't it true, Lawrence, a master of time management? He manages the company, transfers assets, has time to meet Clara, deceives me, and still has time to plot against me.
Even a time management master can't be as busy as him.
Christopher's words seemed to have multiple layers of meaning, and Lawrence's eyes narrowed slightly.
I was really afraid that Lawrence would become suspicious, so I poked my head out from Lawrence's embrace and said with a smile, "Lawrence is indeed busy, but he always remembers me."
I secretly winked at Christopher across from me, reminding him to stop.
Christopher, however, smiled without reaching his eyes, "Oh, if he really remembered you, today's incident wouldn't have happened!"
Lawrence seemed to instantly put away his coldness, becoming gentle and close, "You, always so forgetful. Your phone ran out of battery, and you didn't tell me in advance. I would have picked you up myself instead of troubling unrelated people. Don't do this again; I'll worry."
"Sorry, I didn't want to disturb your work."
Lawrence was acting again, and so was I. But it was the first time I acted in front of Christopher, and I felt a bit embarrassed.
Lawrence didn't show any flaws and even tapped my nose, "With me, you never disturb. You have special privileges!"
Ugh, such corny and hypocritical sweet talk.
How did I ever fall for it before?
I forced myself to look shy and touched, "Lawrence, you're the best."
I really hoped Christopher would leave quickly; otherwise, I couldn't help but feel nauseous.
"It's getting late, and Melinda must be hungry by now. We'll head back first. Thank you for bringing Melinda back. If you need anything in the future, just name it, and I'll fulfill it."
Lawrence really put on a magnanimous act.
Christopher sneered, "No need. I did it for Melinda's parents. Also, a warning: if you treat Melinda badly, don't blame me for being unkind."
Lawrence's eyes shot daggers at Christopher, and he said coldly, "You won't get the chance."
I felt Lawrence's grip on my shoulder tighten.
The atmosphere grew increasingly tense.
I deliberately whispered, "Lawrence, my shoulder hurts!"
Only then did Lawrence loosen his grip on my shoulder and changed to holding my hand, "Melinda, I'll take you home!"
He then pulled me away, not giving Christopher another glance.
Even as our figures grew distant, I could still feel the sharp, cold gaze behind me.
Lawrence seemed to have won, but in reality, he was angry, which meant he lost.
The only one who could frustrate Lawrence was Christopher. He truly was Lawrence's formidable enemy!
I forgave him for now. He disgustingly held me close as we went home.
Lawrence's previously gentle expression, like a mask, came off as soon as we got home, turning dark and cold.
For a moment, I remembered the look in his eyes when he hit me that day, as if he wanted to abuse me.
Even taking off his shoes, he did it with a throwing motion, and the keys he tossed made a loud noise, like a death knell.
"Melinda, tell me, where did you go? How did you just happen to run into Christopher? You've been in contact with him all along, haven't you?"
His tone was hostile, on the verge of anger.
Facing him like this, memories of being beaten resurfaced, and my body ached faintly. I was somewhat afraid, but reason told me not to panic.
My eyes reddened slightly, "What do you mean? You don't trust me? I just went to the mall to discuss renewing my investment with the financial manager. Because it took a long time, I forgot, and my phone shut down automatically without me noticing. I only realized it after I left.
I happened to run into Christopher, who was there on business. Seeing my phone was dead, he offered to give me a ride. Even if you have issues with Christopher, you shouldn't doubt me like this. You said you'd be good to me, didn't you?"
I deliberately mentioned the investment renewal to test Lawrence and divert his attention.
He was fixated on my investment, so even if he disliked Christopher, that had to take a back seat.
Sure enough, his face briefly darkened, then he immediately softened his voice and apologized, "Sorry, I was just worried about you, so I spoke without thinking. But why did you suddenly decide to discuss renewing your investment? I remember it's not due yet."
Lawrence was indeed sharp, catching the key point.
Fortunately, I had already prepared an excuse, so Lawrence wouldn't find any flaws.
"It's not due yet, but it can still be renewed. I was planning to renew it anyway. I heard their company recently launched a new investment project with a 3% higher return. I didn't want to miss such a good opportunity, so I went to renew it today."
I spoke lightly, feeling very pleased inside.
Lawrence was probably dreaming of my investment maturing so he could find a way to transfer it. He didn't expect a sudden change, almost losing his composure.
Serves him right!
Seeing Lawrence unhappy made me happy.
"Those financial managers just want to sell their products. Aren't you afraid of being tricked? How could you be so impulsive without consulting me? What if you got scammed? And you didn't need to rush."
Lawrence's voice was low, but he couldn't hide the urgency in it.
He was probably so angry he wanted to spit blood.
I looked at Lawrence with a moved expression, "Lawrence, you're so good to me! Because you're so good to me, and you're so busy with work, I didn't want to bother you. Don't worry, I had my friend review the contract. There are no problems or traps. I've worked with them many times, and my father trusts their company, so it's fine.
I was in a hurry because I wanted to handle the renewal before going to Avalonia."
Now, Lawrence was being played by me.
Before, Lawrence controlled me. Now, the tables had turned. Being the one in control felt great.
Lawrence frowned, "Avalonia? When? Why haven't you mentioned it before?"
He looked at me with confusion and curiosity.
He probably felt like he was losing control over me.
