Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 95
"Lawrence, now that you're caught, there's no need for us to keep up the charade. Let's cut the crap." I looked at Lawrence and spoke calmly.
Lawrence was taken aback for a moment, then his face returned to that infuriatingly smug expression. "What do you want to hear? Not that I'll necessarily tell you."
I stayed cool. "Tell me the truth about Clara."
"I am telling the truth..." Lawrence began, but I cut him off.
"I've met her. Are you still planning to deceive me? If you don't intend to be honest, I'll just leave."
Being stuck here, waiting to die, wasn't a pleasant experience for Lawrence. He wanted to see Melinda, but he was used to wearing a mask in front of her.
Now, he had a rare chance to learn about the outside world through our conversation. He wouldn't want to miss such an opportunity. He thought he could use his old tricks, but he was wrong. Our roles had long since reversed; I was no longer under his control.
Lawrence's face darkened. "Fine, I'll talk. Let's start from when I first met Clara. It wasn't when you were pregnant; it was earlier, back when your parents were still alive. I was about to graduate. But soon after, we broke up because her family didn't approve of us. She went abroad because of it..."
I found it amusing. Was Lawrence still lying to maintain a shred of dignity? Or did he genuinely believe Clara loved him so much that he was deluding himself with these memories?
"Go on."
"But later, she realized she missed me terribly and couldn't let go. So when she returned, we got back together. Being with her, I immediately wanted to break up with you. Clara was beautiful, came from a better family, and was more open-minded. I felt relaxed and happy with her. Besides, Kyle didn't like me anyway. You acted all pure and chaste, claiming to love me, but wouldn't let me get close. You called it modesty, but it was just pretentiousness. I could barely kiss you, yet you slept with another man."
"You can't compare to Clara. She's rich but devoted to me, even in bed. How could you compete with that?" Lawrence spoke of Clara without a hint of resentment.
It seemed Clara was indeed more impressive than me. I thought my genuine affection for Lawrence meant nothing to him.
"If you hated me so much, why didn't you break up with me? Why pretend to be so devoted while praising Clara? Don't you feel any shame for being so fickle?" I felt nauseated. Did he think I would be jealous?
Lawrence sneered at me. "You think I didn't want to? But Clara and I broke up due to practical reasons. Since we were no longer together, I couldn't break up with you. I invested so much time and effort in pursuing you; I deserved some return. Everything you had should have been mine."
"But when Clara came back, she couldn't forget me. Her family's opposition meant we couldn't be together openly, so we met in secret. She was still my woman. Why wouldn't I enjoy that?"
Lawrence seemed proud of himself. To me, he was like a public restroom—disgusting. I couldn't understand what he was so proud of.
"Looking at you, I don't even want to discuss morals or ethics because you have none. You don't deserve it," I said sarcastically.
Lawrence had no sense of shame, so he remained unfazed by my words.
He continued, "Do you know? Being with Clara is nothing like being with you. Do you know why I didn't let go? Because I wanted revenge! Kyle always looked at me with disdain. So, I stayed with you to spite him. He shouldn't have spied on me and found out about my affair with Emily Johnson, the department manager. His disgusted expression is something I'll remember forever."
I looked at Lawrence in disbelief.
I knew Emily; she was a manager at my dad's company. Kyle disapproved of Lawrence, so I suggested he work at the company to prove his worth. Kyle could see Lawrence's capabilities firsthand.
Lawrence excelled at work and received several commendations. I even bragged to Kyle about him.
Emily was Lawrence's manager. Kyle said that to assess Lawrence's abilities, he had to start from the bottom. If he could rise through the ranks, it would prove his perseverance and competence.
I always thought Lawrence's success was due to his hard work. I never imagined he was so shameless. Emily was in her forties with kids.
It wasn't just cheating; he sold his body. I felt sick to my stomach.
Lawrence was oblivious. "To show Kyle my abilities and climb the ladder faster, I endured so much. You have no idea how desperate Emily was after her divorce. She dressed conservatively but was wild in her office. Her screams during sex were deafening. I endured all that, gave so much, and for what?"
"You're disgusting! No wonder my dad looked down on you. According to you, he caught you cheating with Emily in the office. His disgust was a normal reaction. Why do you hold a grudge against him? He just saw your true colors." I looked at Lawrence coldly, questioning him.
Lawrence grew angrier. "I endured that filth, thinking that once I reached the top, everything would be fine. But he found out, so what was all my effort for? If he hadn't looked down on me from the start, I wouldn't have done it. It's all because Kyle despised me!"
I almost laughed at Lawrence's twisted logic. "Enough. You're a man without principles. My dad saw through you early on. He was right."
Lawrence's face twisted with rage. "He meddled too much. He pointed at me, insulted me, and even forced me to break up with you. I begged him on my knees, slapped myself, and humiliated myself, but he still refused. He wanted me to disappear immediately. How could I? After all I sacrificed, I couldn't just vanish. So, if I couldn't disappear, he had to. He deserved it. He brought it on himself, and I made sure of it!"
