Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 289
The car fell silent again.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm down, when I felt something brushing against my leg under my skirt.
Curious, I reached down and found a small black button-like object.
"What the heck is this?" I asked, holding it up.
Paula and Christopher both turned to look at the object in my hand.
"Hand it over," Christopher said, frowning. He seemed to recognize it.
I passed it to him.
When our fingers touched, I felt a jolt, like a static shock, and quickly pulled my hand back. Christopher didn't seem to notice.
He examined the object closely.
Then, he tapped the driver on the shoulder, signaling him to pull over.
Paula seemed to recognize the object too and was about to say something, but Christopher's look stopped her. She caught on quickly and stayed quiet.
The car came to a stop.
Christopher opened the door and handed the object to the driver, showing him some information he had prepared.
He didn't explain what the driver was supposed to do next.
As the driver walked away with the object, I couldn't help but ask Paula and Christopher, "What is that thing? You both seem to know."
Paula, being a lawyer, was familiar with such things. Some clients used them to gather evidence against others.
Christopher, as a big boss, had seen all kinds of business tactics, so it wasn't surprising he recognized it.
"It's a bug," Paula explained.
I looked at them in surprise.
Christopher's expression was calm, but I could sense a storm brewing in his eyes.
"First a kidnapping, now a bug. What is the mastermind behind all this trying to achieve?" I wondered aloud.
Paula shook her head, "We don't know yet, but everything we just said was probably overheard. We don't know if they got any useful information."
The fact that there was both a kidnapping and a bugging showed that the person behind this was not simple.
Having experienced Lawrence's danger before, I felt a sense of security with the police.
"Why don't we call the police? It's better than being out in the open and constantly being targeted," I suggested.
"Good idea, Melinda. You're getting better at protecting yourself," Paula praised me with a thumbs up.
She always thought highly of me, but being praised so openly in front of Christopher made me a bit embarrassed.
Paula, knowing more about bugs, added, "With this device, we can trace it back and maybe find out who's behind it."
Christopher waited for us to finish before speaking, "I reported your disappearance to the police. They will use professional methods to solve this case."
Paula and I both breathed a sigh of relief.
After such a dangerous day, we were both physically and mentally exhausted, and finally, we could relax a bit.
Soon, the car arrived at the hospital.
Thanks to Christopher's arrangements, as soon as we arrived, nurses and doctors were ready to check on Paula and me.
There was nothing serious.
But because we had scraped our skin on metal, we had to get tetanus shots.
I was speechless.
Having been injured before and knowing the pain of a tetanus shot, I mentally prepared myself, gritted my teeth, and got through it.
But Paula, with her delicate skin, screamed loudly during her shot.
"Ouch! This is torture! Can we get some handsome nurses? Maybe that would help with the pain," Paula joked.
Even in pain, she could still joke, which made me smile.
"Melinda, you're heartless. I'm in agony here, and you're laughing at me. My heart is breaking, but I won't say it," Paula protested.
The nurse applying her medicine couldn't help but laugh.
Since the kidnappers wanted to bug one of us, knowing we were injured, they might come to check on us.
So Christopher suggested we stay in the hospital.
Neither Paula nor I expected to end up in the same hospital room.
"This is quite an adventure!" Paula remarked.
Lying in bed, I propped my hand behind my head, reflecting on the day's dangers.
Paula suddenly turned to me, her eyes meeting mine.
She smiled mysteriously, "What are you thinking about? Christopher?"
My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly stopped her, "No, I'm not."
Paula ignored me, "It's understandable. Christopher showing up like a hero is hard to forget. And did you notice?"
"Notice what?"
I didn't understand what Paula meant.
Paula winked, "Don't pretend. I don't believe you didn't see how worried Christopher was when he found you. That's not how a CEO should act."
I opened my mouth, unable to deny the feelings stirring inside me.
But I couldn't face the truth because of what happened that night.
No matter what, that night was a knot in my heart.
"You're overthinking," I replied awkwardly.
Paula laughed, "I'm not overthinking. Given your parents' relationship with him, it's not just a boss-employee relationship. Am I right? So, Melinda, it's you who's overthinking."
Was I overthinking?
That night still haunted me, affecting my judgment.
I fell silent, not wanting to speak further.
After all the turmoil, Paula and I were exhausted and soon fell asleep.
The next morning, Christopher arrived at the hospital with breakfast prepared by Tiana.
Paula, who had praised Tiana's cooking many times, ate a lot of porridge, having been very hungry since yesterday.
I, being weaker, also drank a lot of porridge.
Paula then asked Christopher, "How's the investigation going? Any leads?"
The abandoned factory had no clues except for a nearby surveillance camera.
"The license plate was fake, so we haven't found those two men yet," Christopher replied.
I suddenly remembered that Paula and I didn't have photos of the two men.
"Christopher, can you get me some paper and a pen? I'll try to draw their faces," I suggested.
Christopher knew I could draw, having learned from my father as a child.
Though I hadn't continued due to my studies, I could still try. If not, we'd have to get a sketch artist to draw the scarred man and the skinny guy.
"Sure, I'll bring it later," Christopher agreed, clearly supporting my idea.
Paula was curious, "Mr. Collins, how come you have time to bring us breakfast today?"
"Tiana made it, and I brought it over. She'll come to take care of you later," Christopher, a busy man, had to rush back to the office for a meeting after delivering breakfast.
He didn't stay long.
Thinking about the time lost, I suggested handling work from the hospital.
Christopher didn't argue, saying he'd have someone bring me a computer later. Then he left.
Shortly after he left, there was another knock on the door.
