Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 187
Quinlan said, "Today, after I left Summit Innovations Group, I went to a bar. He must've sensed I was in a bad mood and followed me without me knowing. When some guy at the bar started giving me a hard time and even forced me to drink, he suddenly showed up out of nowhere to protect me. He got into a fight with those guys and ended up getting beaten up. I tried to shield him, but he used his body to protect me. Things got out of hand, and I was taken to the police station."
"The cops called Marlowe, and she rushed over to take her brother to the hospital. That's when I found out he was her brother."
I asked, "You just found out he was Marlowe's brother, but Marlowe thinks you did it on purpose to get back at her?"
That made sense.
Quinlan shook her head, still unsure.
In her mind, Marlowe and her brother were completely different people.
Marlowe's brother was innocent, kind, and inexperienced, making him easier to get along with. He saw the world without any cynicism, but he looked at it with his heart.
Even if someone like that wasn't particularly smart, if he believed Quinlan was a good person, he would step up in dangerous situations. That was truly commendable.
Only someone with a complicated, even dirty mind, would see everything as dirty.
Marlowe was that kind of person, which was why she was convinced Quinlan approached her brother on purpose to get back at her.
But since he protected Quinlan, I had to ask, "How badly was he hurt when he saved you?"
Quinlan looked worried. "I don't know. He was shielding me, and I didn't have time to check his injuries before the police arrived. After I was taken to the station for questioning, I didn't see him again. Marlowe had already taken him to the hospital. I really want to know how he's doing, so..."
She looked at me hopefully.
This time, she seemed a bit braver.
Maybe that earlier cry had opened her heart to me.
Even if she didn't ask, I would still find out about Marlowe's brother. "Don't worry, I'll look into it."
"Thank you, Melinda!"
Quinlan couldn't do it herself because Marlowe wouldn't give her another chance to get close to her brother.
And I didn't want Quinlan to face more trouble.
"No need to be so formal with me," I smiled.
Quinlan thought for a moment and then said, "Before I leave Starlight City, I hope I can see him one more time."
"You will!" If not, I would find a way to make it happen.
We chatted a bit more, and she finally felt sleepy.
I quietly closed her door, went to my room to wash up, and quickly fell asleep.
Because I stayed up late last night, I almost overslept. Quinlan reminded me.
After I washed up and went downstairs, the smell of breakfast filled the air. I hurried to the dining room.
There was a delicious breakfast on the table, along with a note from Quinlan reminding me to eat while it was still warm. She had already left.
My heart warmed.
She was so lovable. She must have gone through a lot in the past. Despite going to bed so late, she still got up early.
Since there was breakfast at home, I quickly called Tiana to explain the situation.
Tiana didn't ask much and agreed.
After I finished breakfast and headed out, I saw Christopher leaving the house.
But he didn't have a driver or a car with him.
I couldn't help but ask, "Where's your driver?"
"He had some things to take care of."
I nodded. "And your car?"
Christopher had his own car and could drive himself to work.
"It's in for maintenance. The driver hasn't picked it up yet."
So, he must be waiting for me.
It made sense. He didn't even have a ride-hailing app on his phone.
But Christopher was the boss, and I had to be perceptive.
The driver was usually reliable, so this must be something urgent.
I offered, "Mr. Collins, please get in. I'll drive you."
"Thank you." Christopher was polite and quickly got into the passenger seat. I didn't say much.
This time, he knew how to buckle the seatbelt without my help.
That saved me some trouble.
Just like when Christopher's car dropped me off, I planned to let him out a block away from the office.
But Christopher instructed, "Don't stop. Go to the building entrance."
I hesitated but spoke up, "Mr. Collins, that might not be appropriate."
Christopher turned to look at me deeply. "Why not?"
"Right now, I'm just your assistant. There are already too many rumors because I'm a woman. If I drive you to work, it will only fuel more gossip, which could harm your reputation."
I explained, because I didn't care about my reputation after my live stream. I was mainly concerned about him. "I don't mind, but Mr. Collins, you have always kept a clean image. If we arrive together, people will say I used special means to have an inappropriate relationship with you. I don't want to affect your reputation."
"Ignore the nonsense. You and I are both single. Even if we were in a relationship, it would be normal. I don't mind, and you shouldn't either." He spoke as if giving work instructions.
Out of habit, I almost stood at attention and blurted out, "Mr. Collins, don't worry. I'll prove that our relationship is purely professional."
Christopher's expression paused.
Then he looked at me deeply. "Do you think that day will come?"
So, every time Christopher praised me, it was just encouragement.
He didn't actually believe I could do it.
I accepted many things, but I refused to give up. I was determined to prove I can do it.
Christopher's expression was cold, his voice icy. "You're my assistant. Driving me to work is part of your job."
The boss's word was law.
Since he said so, I had no choice but to obey.
But I could still be flexible in how I followed orders.
So, instead of stopping at the building entrance, I parked in the underground garage.
This way, even if someone saw us, it would be less likely. And in the dim garage, I could always deny it later, claiming they were mistaken.
