Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 271
Next, Paula and I waited for that person to contact us.
We had talked about who it might be and figured it wouldn't be the first person to message us with questions. Instead, it would probably be the one who could keep their cool the longest.
Because staying calm meant having a brain and wanting to solve the problem.
There was another reason for our guess.
It had to do with their family background.
The first person to send a questioning message was in a hurry because their family wasn't prominent and relied on the Ellis family for support. They would be the most panicked about their family finding out.
The one who could stay calm had confidence because their family was on par with the Ellis family. Their marriage was stable, and even if their relationship might break because of this, their interests wouldn't.
The contact came sooner than we expected.
It turned out that Sloane, the person who reached out, was somewhat related to Paula!
"What are you planning?" Paula, knowing the other person's intentions, got straight to the point.
The voice on the other end was commanding, "Name your price and give me the video!"
Paula laughed as if she had heard a joke.
"What's so funny?" The mocking laughter clearly annoyed the other person.
Paula replied, "If you want to negotiate with me, shouldn't you have done your homework? Do I look like someone who needs money? Besides, if I name a price, it changes the nature of this. Are you trying to set me up? I know enough about the law not to fall for that!"
I couldn't help but stifle a laugh beside her.
Paula wasn't just knowledgeable; she was a renowned lawyer, far from knowing just the basics.
Seeing me laugh, Paula raised an eyebrow at me.
On the other end, Sloane paused before saying, "It seems you have the upper hand. What do you want?"
There was a hint of resignation in her voice.
Paula, sensing the moment was right, said directly, "Stefan has dirt on Helena. Give me that, and I'll pretend I never saw anything about you and him, and I won't say a word."
"Why should I trust you? And who is Helena?"
"Let's start with Helena. She's Stefan's assistant. You're so close, and you don't know? As for me..." Paula chuckled, "Didn't you notice that my last name is the same as your husband's?"
"Ellis?" Sloane was shocked. "No way?"
She had clearly guessed it was the Ellis family, the wealthiest in Starlight City.
But Sloane quickly realized that Paula was indeed the daughter of the Ellis family. However, because Paula wasn't active in the Ellis Group or social circles, people only heard rumors about her and rarely interacted with her.
"No wonder you dared to name a price right away. Let me guess, what did Stefan say? Did he tell you I'm a gold digger trying to latch onto rich men, clinging to him while also trying to hook up with others? Did he say he disciplined me because I was trying to seduce rich men, and I held a grudge?"
Sloane's breathing grew heavier, but she didn't refute Paula, indicating Paula was right.
Stefan had clearly convinced Sloane, and she hadn't verified the facts.
"Did Stefan tell you how to deal with me?" Paula asked, knowing Stefan's nature.
Sloane, still reeling from the revelation, almost blurted out, "He said you were ungrateful and told me to lure you to my place and teach you a lesson."
"That bastard!" Paula cursed, her anger flaring.
I frowned beside her, thinking of how men like Stefan and Lawrence deserved severe punishment.
I wanted to tear Stefan apart.
"Stefan deceived you and used you. He knew my identity but didn't tell you, making you offend me. Why do you think he did that?"
Paula's words hit Sloane hard.
It was clear Stefan was using Sloane to do his dirty work, hoping for mutual destruction so he could benefit.
"Honestly, the conflict between you and Stefan has nothing to do with me. If you hadn't threatened me with the video, I wouldn't be involved. So please destroy the video!" Sloane finally said in a low voice.
Paula wasn't foolish. "Mrs. Ellis, our families are in business. When it comes to interests, we exchange benefits, not play emotional cards with strangers, right?"
Paula had made her demands clear from the start.
She also reminded Sloane, "Think about it. If he could hook up with someone as wealthy as you, why not others? Maybe he's using this chance to ditch you, making you the scapegoat!"
"You're doing this on purpose, trying to drive a wedge between us because you hate him," Sloane said, still defending Stefan.
Paula shook her head, thinking how naive Sloane was.
Seeing no agreement, Paula was ready to hang up.
With the video in hand, she had the upper hand.
But Sloane suddenly spoke, "How can you prove your suspicions about Stefan are true?"
"How about this? Let's play along and see Stefan's next move. Then you'll know if I'm right."
Paula wasn't in a hurry for Sloane to decide, so she gave her time to think before hanging up.
I almost lost it, hearing their conversation and knowing Stefan wanted to harm Paula. It reminded me of Lawrence's cruelty.
So after Paula hung up, I said excitedly, "Paula, you can't take risks with a man like Stefan. He's dangerous and might really harm you!"
"Melinda, calm down. Stefan isn't Lawrence, and I'm not the old you. I know his intentions and won't get hurt. Calm down, really."
Paula hugged me, seeing I was triggered by memories of Lawrence.
I calmed down but still felt uneasy.
I held her hand tightly, "Paula, don't take risks. We can find another way to deal with him!"
Paula nodded obediently, "Okay, I won't take risks."
Knowing Paula's nature, I still felt uneasy and kept reminding her.
To change the subject, Paula mentioned Azalea Gray.
"Do you know Azalea? She's about to get married!"
Azalea was Paula's childhood friend. Though they lost touch after Paula left the Ellis Villa, they still had a bond. Azalea had sought Paula's help during tough times.
Paula had even helped Azalea move abroad.
