Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 311
At that moment, Christopher was so close that we were less than three inches apart.
I could almost touch his lips if I just tilted my head a bit.
His warm breath brushed against my face, and I could hear his breathing getting heavier.
His gaze was intense and deep, making my face flush even though I wasn't looking directly at him.
The atmosphere between us was too charged, too intimate.
I couldn't help but let my mind wander.
Suddenly, I felt him slowly lowering his head...
I immediately remembered that night, the night Christopher and I were tangled up in bed.
No, we couldn't!
I couldn't help but push Christopher away and fled his house, rushing back to my own place.
Sitting on my couch, my heart was still pounding.
Just now, when Christopher lowered his head, was he about to kiss me?
How could I think like that?
I couldn't help but pat my burning face, trying to shake off those wild thoughts.
Christopher was such a great guy, and I was just a divorced woman. Even if I had never been married, with my background and looks, I wouldn't be a match for Christopher.
I tried to calm myself down and then remembered that in my haste, I had forgotten the main reason I went to Christopher's house.
I went to Christopher's to pick up Sunny, but I ended up running back home and forgetting about Sunny.
I wasn't ready to face Christopher again just yet.
Anyway, Sunny loved Biscuit so much, it was probably happy I forgot about it, giving it more time to be with Biscuit.
I decided not to go back to Christopher's house.
To distract myself from thinking about Christopher, I randomly picked a book from my shelf.
When I opened it, I found a piece of paper and a postcard tucked inside, making it easy to spot.
Seeing the familiar handwriting on the paper, I realized this was one of the books Christopher had read.
Maybe that was why I had placed it where I usually grabbed books, wanting to learn from Christopher by reading the books he had read.
I didn't expect Christopher to take notes!
But when I looked at the paper, it was a wish list, and several items were already checked off.
At the bottom of the list, it said: "Go to the places you've been, feel the wind you've felt."
And the postcard showed a field of lavender.
A bold guess popped into my mind.
To verify it, I quickly took out my phone and opened a special album where I kept all the places I wanted to visit.
I compared several places, and they all matched Christopher's wish list.
My hands started to tremble.
Could it be that the person Christopher liked was actually me?
The thought made me both surprised and a little happy.
Thinking back, many things I had overlooked now made sense through this new perspective.
For example, Christopher had always kept his distance from women, but because he liked me, he made an exception and hired a female secretary for the first time.
But I was married before, my job wasn't the best, and I was not the most beautiful.
Would Christopher really stay single for me, even after my divorce, and silently stay by my side?
I couldn't help but doubt this possibility.
But then again, Christopher had always been so good to me, sometimes even better than a regular friend, which made me secretly happy.
I hesitated whether to share this guess with Paula.
But then I thought, Paula had always been subtly trying to set me up with Christopher. If I told her my guess, would she push me even more to consider Christopher?
I rubbed my phone, unable to bring myself to call Paula.
Suddenly, my phone rang, startling me and making my heart skip a beat.
I looked at the caller ID and saw it was Paula.
I hesitated for a moment but decided to answer. Maybe she had something important to say.
"Hey, Paula. What's up? Calling me at this hour?"
Paula and I usually didn't contact each other unless there was gossip, news, or something important.
We had a mutual understanding and didn't get upset over not staying in constant touch.
"You told me to be nicer to my dad, right? I took his call, and guess what he said?"
Paula didn't sound upset, so it seemed like they hadn't had a big argument.
But since Paula called specifically to tell me this, I had a feeling it might have something to do with me.
"What did he say?"
I was curious.
Paula then recounted the conversation.
Randy said, "Paula, when did you meet Mrs. Collins? She seems to really like you. She sent over a lot of nice things and said they were for you. She's planning to visit."
"If she's visiting, just treat her well. She's a guest, after all," Paula replied nonchalantly, not showing much excitement.
But Randy wasn't satisfied with that answer.
He started probing, "Aren't you coming back? Mrs. Collins is coming to see you. It wouldn't be right if you're not here."
Paula remained unmoved, "I'm not that close to her. Maybe she's just using it as an excuse to get to know you better. I'm good friends with Mr. Collins' secretary. His mom visited us in the hospital. Even if I'm not home, it won't affect her visit."
Paula and I both knew that while Randy was the richest man in Starlight City, he still wasn't on the same level as the Collins family. If the Ellis Group wanted to climb higher, forming a connection with the Collins family would be a big step.
Randy even had some bolder ideas.
"Is Mrs. Collins easy to get along with? How does she treat you?" Randy continued to probe.
Paula decided to be straightforward, "Mrs. Collins is quite warm and kind to me. She even gave me the jade bracelet she was wearing, saying we had a connection. I posted about it online, so it's not a secret. Don't doubt my words again."
Paula's tone was stubborn and a bit bitter.
Hearing this, Randy couldn't help but feel guilty.
It was his first time being a father, so he was still figuring out how to be a good one to Paula.
"I'm sorry, that's not what I meant. But since she gave you such a valuable bracelet, you should have told me in advance," Randy said, not sure if it was fatherly love or the potential benefits that made him start to entice Paula.
