Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 172
Christopher stayed quiet.
Will managed to keep his cool. He continued to apologize, "Mr. Collins, I just found out about the mess my son caused at Summit Innovations Group. It's my fault for not raising him right and letting him act recklessly. I'm here to offer my sincere apologies."
Christopher's intense gaze fell on Will. "Mr. Bennett, don't you think your apology is a bit late? If Alan hadn't been sent to jail and was now facing a potential prison sentence, would you even be here?"
Those words stripped away Will's facade of hypocrisy.
Will finally couldn't control his expression, his face turning a bit grim. "Mr. Collins, if I understand correctly, Alan's prosecution is related to you!"
After all, a case like this wouldn't typically require someone of Jason's caliber, a top criminal lawyer.
He usually handled major cases, so for him to take on a sexual harassment case, it likely needed someone with Christopher's influence.
Will was a smart man, especially since they couldn't even see Alan in prison. They analyzed the situation and concluded there must be someone pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Hearing Christopher's words now, it was only natural for Will to assume he was the one behind it. I couldn't help but glance at Christopher secretly.
For a moment, I almost believed Will's words. Could it be that Christopher had asked Jason to take the case because Alan harassed me at the company?
But then I quickly dismissed the thought. Even if Christopher wanted to protect his employees, he had already avenged me at the time. How could he have gotten Jason to take such a case? It was just a coincidence that I ran into Jason, and he had already started handling the case of Alan sexually harassing female employees, and there were multiple victims.
Maybe it was because of the severity of the situation, or maybe Jason had a sense of justice and other victims had approached him, so he took the case.
Christopher spoke with a cold smile, "Mr. Bennett, you got one thing wrong. Alan is the one who did wrong. He's not a child; he should be responsible for his actions. Your words make it sound like I led him astray. Don't say things you shouldn't."
Anyone could sense the displeasure and coldness in Christopher's words.
Will, being a smart man, didn't dare to offend Christopher further at this moment. He quickly explained, "Mr. Collins, you misunderstood. That's not what I meant."
"Good. Alan's situation is already settled. If you want to protect the Bennett family, you should handle this quickly, just like you did with Alan's divorce case."
Alan's divorce had caused quite a stir, with rumors flying everywhere. But overnight, all the media went silent, and all the statements about Alan were wiped clean.
The gossip disappeared before the public could even see it. This was why Alan dared to act so arrogantly afterward.
However, because of this, Alan lost his standing within the Bennett family, which was a way to separate him from the Bennett Group.
Will, reminded by Christopher, had a flash of understanding in his eyes and didn't say anything more.
When the elevator reached the executive floor, I followed Christopher out. The two Bennett family members stayed in the elevator and went back down.
With the Bennett family issue temporarily resolved, I threw myself into work, getting better and better at it. As Paula put it, I was starting to look more and more like an executive assistant.
I hadn't seen Paula for about a week. Today, I wasn't busy, and she had something to do near my office, so we arranged to meet at a nearby private restaurant.
It was a restaurant run by a foreigner, and the food was excellent. We had been there once and both liked it.
She asked me to go ahead, and she would join me after finishing her business.
After leaving the building, I headed to the restaurant. Maybe it was because of the Lawrence incident, but I felt overly sensitive, like someone was following me.
I kept looking back, and although I didn't see anyone, I was sure it wasn't just my imagination. Someone was definitely following me.
Once I was sure, even though I was almost at the restaurant, I didn't go in. Instead, I turned a corner and waited.
When the person following me thought they had caught up, I stepped out from the corner. We came face to face.
"You again!" I frowned, genuinely annoyed. The stalking was clumsy, but it was enough to scare someone, just disgusting.
If it weren't for the Lawrence incident, I might have been scared to death. How could this person be so persistent?
But I wasn't scared. The person following me seemed even more frightened, hiding behind their bag.
"Ophelia, are you kidding me? Hiding like that doesn't cover anything. Do you think I can't see you?" I mocked.
Ophelia, hearing me call her name, awkwardly lowered her bag, looking haggard and pitiful.
"What do you want now?" I asked, clearly impatient.
This time, she had none of her usual arrogance. She was dressed plainly, without any jewelry or even decent clothes.
"Don't be mad. I'm not here to cause trouble. It's just..." Her face turned red, her eyes darting around nervously. "I've been sleeping on the streets. I had no choice but to find you."
I couldn't help but look her over, my eyes full of suspicion and confusion.
I had warned her that even if the Bennett family was ruthless and kicked her out, she could at least take a piece of jewelry or two. But here she was, in a T-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops.
In this weather, she could manage during the day, but once the sun set, she'd be freezing. How did she end up like this?
Her face was bare, without any makeup, looking like she had been kicked out of bed. But it made her look younger and more innocent.
"Why should I care about you? We have no relationship, and we even have some grudges!" After all, being slandered and looked down upon wasn't something I could just forget. I was not a saint. Ophelia must be out of her mind.
My reminder seemed to make her remember her past misdeeds, and she blushed with embarrassment.
But she still managed to say, "I had no choice. I couldn't think of anyone else to turn to."
As soon as she finished speaking, her stomach growled loudly. She instinctively held her stomach, looking at me with hopeful eyes. "It's mealtime. You must be going to eat. Taking me along won't make a difference."
I almost rolled my eyes at her. She made it seem like I owed her something.
