Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 45
Lawrence saw Clara off.
Then, acting like a good man, he sat by the bed, gently stroking my hair.
My face!
Then my neck!
His large hand paused on my neck.
At that moment, I felt his hand was a bit cold.
It felt like a cold snake was pressed against my neck, and for a moment, I thought he wanted to snap my neck.
But vaguely, he seemed to hear footsteps approaching from outside, and Lawrence withdrew his hand.
Then he started peeling an apple.
"I thought you didn't care about Melinda. Melinda is sick, and you didn't stay by her side. I thought you loved Melinda so much, but it seems I care more about Melinda than you do."
Soon, Paula returned.
She still made a couple of sarcastic remarks.
But Paula had regained her composure and was more measured. Her tone sounded dissatisfied, but it was reasonable.
"Sorry, something came up at work, and I got a sudden call. I was afraid of disturbing Melinda's rest, so I walked away to take the call."
Lawrence knew Paula and I were close, so he was always quite nice to Paula.
Paula spoke directly to Lawrence, always reminding him to treat me well, and Lawrence always listened with a good attitude.
He was so good at enduring and acting that even a sharp divorce lawyer like Paula didn't see through his facade. Of course, another reason was that Paula didn't meet Lawrence often.
"Mm."
It seemed like their conversation woke me up. I frowned slightly and opened my eyes, still looking a bit dazed.
"Paula!"
I called out to Paula first, then looked at Lawrence with joy in my eyes, "Ah, Lawrence, when did you come back? I thought you were busy and not here!"
As I spoke, I showed a hint of loneliness.
Lawrence gently touched my forehead, "You're not running a fever anymore, thank goodness. You scared me. Melinda, you're sick. How could I leave you? I just took a call from the company to handle some matters."
Then he handed me the peeled apple, "Your favorite apples from that place."
"Lawrence, thank you!" I smiled sweetly.
Paula, standing nearby, deliberately said, "You two always show off your love in front of a single person like me. Don't you know the more you show off, the easier it is to break up!"
She snorted coldly, deliberately saying something to provoke.
Lawrence, however, responded very seriously, "Paula, I don't want to hear that. Melinda will always be with me. She will only be mine."
I blushed, "Lawrence, what are you saying in front of Paula? It's so embarrassing. I'm a bit hungry. Could you get me something to eat? Paula and I haven't seen each other in a while, and we want to catch up."
"Yes, yes, the things Melinda and I talk about are not for you to hear. It's just between the two of us." Paula raised her eyebrows arrogantly, giving Lawrence a challenging look.
Lawrence was used to Paula's attitude and instead smiled warmly, "I'll go get some food. You two have a good chat."
Then, Lawrence walked out of the room.
He closed the door behind him.
But the slightly open crack revealed his true expression.
Paula, with her back to the door, didn't see it, but I, sitting on the bed, could vaguely see through the crack.
Most importantly, because of everything that had happened recently, I was very wary of Lawrence, so I was particularly sensitive to his emotions.
He was hiding outside the door, and even at this distance, I could feel the cold, calculating aura emanating from him.
Paula was about to speak when I made a shushing gesture and glanced at the door.
We were indeed good friends, understanding each other perfectly.
She immediately understood my meaning and then said to me, "I have to say, you're too soft and easy to bully. How did you end up with a fever and a cold? Look at your haggard face. If Lawrence can't take care of you, you should get a divorce early. Come to my place, and I'll take care of you. Lucky can keep you company, and you can help me walk him. I think Lucky is better than that bad man Lawrence."
Paula continued her tirade, taking the opportunity to curse Lawrence a bit, feeling a bit better.
You have to admit, lawyers are good with words, even when cursing, they do it differently.
"Lawrence treats me very well. You can't say that about him, or I'll get mad at you." I pretended to be angry.
"Fine, you and your Lawrence. I'm just worried about you. Look how much weight you've lost recently. How can I not worry that Lawrence is mistreating you? Are you sure Lawrence hasn't mistreated you?"
Paula asked again, confirming.
I shook my head, "Of course not. He's been especially good to me, making sure I have all kinds of supplements every day. He even cooks all the meals at home himself. And despite being so busy with work, he spends all his free time with me."
Also, I said very seriously, "Paula, you mustn't mention divorce in front of Lawrence again, and don't mention it to me either. Otherwise, Lawrence will get mad at you, and I can't bear that. Actually, he's really good to me. I got sick because I didn't cover myself properly. Don't blame everything on him. He was the one who brought me to the hospital and stayed with me for a long time."
"You, blinded by love! I give up on you! If you two are happy, of course, I'm happy. Should I apologize to him later, at least to show respect, so he can treat you even better?"
Paula thought for a moment, hesitating and asking nervously.
I smiled, "That shouldn't be necessary. Lawrence is so kind and generous. How could he really hold a grudge against you? He only has me in his heart and definitely won't hold it against you."
"Tsk tsk tsk, I get it. In your eyes, Lawrence is the best in the world."
Paula couldn't help but sigh, then changed the subject, "Your best-in-the-world husband Lawrence, how could he let your child die? When I went on a business trip, you and the baby were fine. Are you sure he didn't mistreat you?"
"No, of course not!" My tone was a bit sad and sorrowful, "I slipped and fell, causing a massive hemorrhage. By the time I got to the hospital, it was too late."
"Your belly was so big. How could Lawrence not be by your side all the time?" Paula sighed, feeling a bit frustrated.
"I saw how busy he was with work and told him to go handle it. He didn't want to leave, but this might just be fate."
As I spoke, my expression grew sadder and more desolate.
At that moment, it wasn't an act. I truly felt the pain of losing my child.
Paula silently held my hand, giving me strength.
I smiled at her, silently reassuring her: I'm okay.
Paula glanced at the door, her eyes asking: Has Lawrence left?
