Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 124

My first instinct was to run! But he was already so close, and I had been too lost in my thoughts to notice.

I should have sensed something was off because I had felt like someone was following me.

I could feel the heat of his presence almost touching my back. My whole body went cold. I should have taken the chance to stomp on his foot and then run like crazy.

But I was so shocked that my body went limp, like it was filled with lead, and I couldn't move.

"Help..." I tried to scream.

I was trying to stay calm, telling myself I had to shout for help, or it would be over. But before I could say more, Lawrence's hand, holding a cloth, covered my mouth.

The smell from the cloth made me dizzy immediately. I was terrified, guessing it was soaked in some kind of drug. I knew I was in big trouble.

My already weak body became completely uncontrollable.

His cold voice whispered in my ear, "Melinda, stop struggling. I told you, you wouldn't escape my grasp. Now, look at you, right in my hands. You wanted to flirt with Christopher, didn't you? Too bad you're still so stupid. You knew Clara hated you, yet you still came to meet her. Soon, you'll see her again, very soon..."

I struggled, but all I could manage were muffled sounds. The more I struggled, the harder Lawrence pressed me down, dragging me into a dark corner. I felt myself inhaling more of the drug, making me even weaker.

I felt a sense of despair. With the drug in my system, escaping immediately was impossible.

I let my body go limp and closed my eyes, pretending to pass out.

I was actually slipping into a semi-conscious state, feeling myself being lifted and slung over Lawrence's cold, hard shoulder.

My body swayed, making me feel nauseous, but I couldn't let Lawrence know I was still somewhat conscious, so I had to endure it.

Thankfully, it wasn't long before I was thrown to the ground. My consciousness was fading.

I woke up from the pain in my leg.

Opening my eyes, I saw Lawrence's bloodthirsty eyes. His face was gaunt, with dark circles under his eyes, and his eyes were bloodshot. His hand gripped the handle of a knife, the blade embedded in my leg, still bleeding.

The pain twisted my face. "Lawrence, why are you here? Weren't you sick? Did you escape from prison? That'll add another charge. You faked illness to avoid trial, and now you're seeking death?"

I tried to stay calm, pretending to analyze the situation. I wanted Lawrence to see reason and let me go.

"Shut up, you bitch. Do you think you have the right to lecture me? Isn't everything I'm going through now because of you?"

Lawrence slapped me hard, making my face swell instantly and my head snap to the side.

That was when I noticed a woman tied up nearby. She had wavy hair, her body covered in cuts, some still bleeding, others scabbed over. Her hair covered half her face, making it hard to see clearly.

I realized Lawrence had brought me to a house. He hadn't tied me up, probably confident that the drug would keep me weak, and he was right. I had no strength to escape, let alone stand up.

"Lawrence, I lured her here for you. Aren't you going to deal with this bitch? Scar her face so she can't seduce any more men. Torture her, cut her flesh piece by piece, and kill her," The woman, who I thought was unconscious, suddenly looked at me coldly and excitedly urged Lawrence.

Lawrence walked over and slapped her hard, reopening the wounds on her face.

"Who gave you the right to order me? Melinda deserves to die, but you won't escape either. Kyle looked down on me, and now his daughter is in my hands. Melinda, you could have given me all your money, and maybe things wouldn't have come to this."

"As for Clara, you always acted so high and mighty, but look at you now, groveling." Lawrence's anger grew as he spoke.

He pulled the knife from my leg, making me pale with pain, but I didn't scream.

The woman, Clara, screamed as Lawrence, in his rage, stabbed her several times.

Clara's pride vanished, replaced by tears and pleas. "Baby, I'm sorry. I know I used you, but I grew to love you. Everything I did was genuine. If it seemed otherwise, it was because Melinda interfered."

What a way to shift blame.

Clara, who was once so proud, now looked so pathetic. She must have been terrified of Lawrence, yet she endured the pain to lure me here. Clara's hatred for me was clear.

Lawrence glared at Clara. "Shut up. You always acted so smart and proud, but look at you now, begging me." He mocked her.

Clara lowered her eyes, saying nothing.

I laughed mockingly.

Clara snapped, "What are you laughing at, bitch?"

"I'm just amused that you, who thought you were so clever, ended up in such a pitiful state, in the hands of the man you despise."

I remembered Clara's disdain for Lawrence clearly. If she remembered, she must have wanted to hide in shame.

"Soon, you'll be worse off than me because Lawrence hates you more. You're the reason he's like this!" Clara's sharp voice echoed in the room, like it could pierce the walls.

I looked up at Lawrence. Our eyes met, his filled with malice.
