Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 295
Paula initially thought interrupting was just part of the deal.
But when she heard Jason mention me, she stopped, glanced at me, and decided to keep listening.
Marlowe's expression stayed calm, though she pretended to be surprised. "What happened to her now? Wasn't she just in the hospital recently?"
Jason suddenly stood up straight, his eyes locked on Marlowe, like he was trying to read her mind.
"I'm talking about her being hospitalized because she was kidnapped," Jason continued.
Marlowe's face stayed indifferent, her disdain for me barely hidden. "Not surprising. With her personality, she's not exactly likable. Her ex-husband didn't like her, and now it could be her colleagues or someone she pissed off. It's not surprising at all!"
"Do you really think that?"
"What else?"
Marlowe was nonchalant.
Jason's expression suddenly turned serious. "The kidnappers have been caught by the police!"
That statement finally caused a flicker of change in Marlowe's expression.
Although she quickly masked it, she didn't realize we were watching from the shadows, so I easily caught it.
Jason's deliberate probing and Marlowe's reaction made Paula and I exchange a knowing glance. We had both guessed some truths.
"Since they've been caught, Melinda can rest easy. She always seems to have good luck," Marlowe continued her act.
When she mentioned my luck, I knew exactly what she meant.
Besides this kidnapping, I had survived several of Lawrence's schemes, even attempts on my life. It was indeed a stroke of luck amidst misfortune.
Jason shook his head at Marlowe's words. "It's not luck. It's the long arm of the law. However, there's someone behind the kidnappers that we haven't identified yet."
"Can't they just interrogate them to find out who it is?" Marlowe's composure was impressive, as she remained calm while saying this.
Jason glanced at her and replied, "The kidnappers never saw the person behind it, so they can't identify them."
Just as Marlowe seemed to relax, Jason added, "But they did reveal the location and amount of the cash transaction."
Marlowe managed to keep a straight face.
Jason's eyes seemed to flash with disappointment. He spoke in a low, difficult voice, "I went to the location the kidnappers mentioned. Do you know where it is?"
For the first time, Marlowe reacted strongly. "I don't know, and I don't want to know! What are you trying to say? What does this have to do with me?"
Jason's gaze bore into her. "Are you sure it has nothing to do with you?"
Marlowe's face darkened, and she glared at him coldly. "What do you mean by that? You don't think I'm the mastermind, do you? Fine, Jason, you keep saying you want to make it up to me, but look at what you're doing! Suspecting me, accusing me, are you planning to send me to jail? Do you think my life is too easy?"
" If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have gotten sick and almost died. You and Christopher are truly good friends. He almost crippled me, and you still won't let me go." She became more agitated, her expression almost hysterical.
But Jason didn't show any fear or disgust. Instead, his expression grew somber. "Sorry, about that incident..."
"Enough! I don't want to talk about it!" Marlowe seemed triggered, covering her ears, refusing to listen.
Paula and I were listening intently, eager for more information.
But Marlowe's reaction nearly drove us to frustration.
Paula clenched her fist, as if to say, "So frustrating!"
Paula, who loved gossip, was disappointed, and I felt a bit regretful and uneasy.
"Marlowe, avoiding..."
"Am I avoiding? It's just that what's done is done, and nothing can change it. So, no matter how much you say, it only annoys me."
Marlowe finished speaking and didn't want to deal with Jason anymore. She started to wheel herself away.
Was she so confident that Jason would always compromise?
As expected, she moved slowly, seemingly waiting for someone to help.
And the person she was counting on, Jason, indeed caught up with her and began pushing her wheelchair away.
Then, they came face to face with Paula and me.
Marlowe, who had been in control, suddenly turned pale when she saw us.
"Why are you here? How much did you hear?"
Marlowe was clearly nervous and guilty.
Paula sneered, "If you don't want people to know, don't do it. God is fair, we heard everything!"
In other words, we had heard the part about Marlowe possibly being the mastermind.
"Melinda, this is your upbringing. Eavesdropping and still being so arrogant, it's shameless!" Marlowe lashed out in anger.
But at this point, her anger was directed at me, not Paula, which was quite something!
Paula retorted, "We may lack manners, but that's just a moral issue. It's nothing compared to breaking the law. You can yell at us now, but let's see if you can be so 'eloquent' when the police arrive!"
Paula was my good friend. She wouldn't stand by while Marlowe insulted me.
Besides, Paula and I were the victims. We wanted justice, and the police would help us get it.
Paula started to take out her phone to call the police.
Marlowe's face changed, her eyes darkening as she looked at us, but she said nothing.
Was she really that calm?
I was puzzled.
Then I realized why she was so calm.
Jason, who had been silent, suddenly grabbed Paula's hand to stop her from calling the police. "Wait, Ms. Ellis, please don't act rashly. I need to speak with you alone."
Paula's face darkened as she struggled.
But the more she struggled, the tighter Jason's grip became.
Paula, who had been pampered all her life, soon had five finger marks on her wrist, and we could hear the creaking of bones, as if he might break her wrist.
"It hurts! Jason, you're..."Paula was almost cursing from the pain.
Finally, she couldn't help but bite his hand.
Jason looked at Paula's face, and her sudden bite made him instinctively let go. "Sorry, I didn't mean to. I just wanted to stop you..."
Paula sneered, her eyes red with tears.
I quickly checked on her, worried. "Paula, are you okay? Did your wound reopen?"
Jason's eyes fell on the fresh blood on Paula's bandaged wrist, and his face changed.
Just as I was about to take Paula away to re-bandage her wound, Jason stepped in, grabbing her elbow this time. "I'll take you to get it treated!"
"No way!" Paula refused to leave, reminding him coldly, "We haven't called the police yet!"
