Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 265
How should I put this?
I used to be convinced that Christopher liked Marlowe, simply because he treated her differently.
It was unique. So I was sure of it!
But recently, Christopher's behavior has made me doubt.
Even if he was distancing himself to prevent Faye from discovering his feelings for Marlowe, his overly cold demeanor and calm emotions didn't seem like the actions of someone who truly liked another person.
Could I have been wrong?
Maybe Christopher liked someone else.
But who could it be?
The number of girls he interacted with was very limited. Besides the few dates Faye arranged for him, there was only Marlowe.
If Marlowe wasn't the one he liked, then who was it?
Maybe he had hidden it so well that she had never even appeared!
Of course, this was Christopher we were talking about. He would protect the person he liked so well that she wouldn't be in any danger at all!
Forget it, it was Christopher's private matter. Since I couldn't figure it out, I wouldn't dwell on it.
I didn't expect Marlowe to be so persistent. Even after being clearly rejected, she still wouldn't give up calling me.
I blocked her number, so she found other ways to call me.
She even called my office, persistently, seriously affecting my work.
In the end, I had no choice but to answer Marlowe's call.
Before I could even get angry, she started questioning me, "Melinda, how dare you treat me like this!"
What a big mouth.
Served her right.
I could hear her yelling, followed by a pained gasp.
"Ms. Grey, who do you think you are? Why should I have to take your calls?" I retorted sarcastically.
Marlowe was taken aback.
Then she arrogantly said, "Because I'm Christopher's future wife. I will marry him and become his wife. Is this how you treat Christopher's future wife? Believe me, I can get you fired from Summit Innovations Group with just one word!"
Even if Christopher, the boss, wanted to fire me, I doubt he would use such an attitude.
Marlowe was really too full of herself.
I was now more convinced that she was not the one Christopher liked. After all, someone like him wouldn't have such poor taste.
So I replied directly, "Ms. Grey, where do you get the confidence to be so sure you'll marry Mr. Collins? If I remember correctly, Mr. Collins has already clearly rejected you!"
"Do you know that Mrs. Collins doesn't like Christopher? He rejected me and distanced himself to give Mrs. Collins the wrong impression, to avoid her targeting me. You've never been protected by someone, so you wouldn't understand!"
Marlowe sure knew how to hit where it hurt. If it were the old me, I might have fallen into self-doubt and felt really sad, but not anymore.
"Is that so? If you're so capable and confident, why don't you just make Mr. Collins care about you? Why bother calling me and affecting my work? I don't mind spreading the word about your true nature!"
I was fed up with Marlowe's arrogance, so I didn't hold back.
"Are you threatening me? You're just a lowly secretary, and you don't know how to please Christopher's future wife. Do you know the consequences of offending me?" Marlowe shouted, enraged by my words.
I held the phone away to prevent my eardrums from being pierced by her voice.
After she finished, I coldly said, "Then wait until you become Mr. Collins's wife before you start showing off. Don't call me again."
With that, I hung up without hesitation.
It seemed she realized I was about to hang up, and she quickly shouted, "Melinda, how dare you hang up on me!"
Then, all she heard was the sound of the call being disconnected.
This woman was really persistent.
Even after all that, she still kept calling me.
Since I couldn't afford to miss important calls at work, I had to answer the phone.
At first, when I saw her familiar number, I just hung up. But she, lying in a hospital bed, still managed to get a new number to call me.
When I answered and heard her voice, I didn't give her a chance to speak and hung up immediately.
Finally, Marlowe seemed to realize I wouldn't respond to her, so she sent me an email.
First, she accused me of having a bad attitude, saying I deserved to be disliked and abandoned by Lawrence. Then, after provoking me, she arrogantly offered me a chance to redeem myself by getting Christopher to visit her.
I thought she must have hit her head in the car accident. Otherwise, why would she be daydreaming in broad daylight?
I didn't even want to deal with her, so why would I go out of my way to persuade Christopher to see her?
Besides, Christopher had already made his attitude towards Marlowe clear to me. As his secretary, I just follow his instructions. There was no need to do something that wouldn't change Marlowe's attitude towards me.
I ignored her email and focused entirely on my work.
Marlowe must have realized I wouldn't respond to her, so she finally settled down.
I sighed as I looked at the documents in my hand. No matter how much I wanted to avoid it, since it was work, I couldn't avoid facing Christopher.
I picked up the documents that needed Christopher's signature and went to his office, handing them over. "Mr. Collins, these documents need your signature."
Christopher seemed engrossed in his work and didn't notice. When he reached for the documents, he accidentally grabbed my hand.
Now, I felt repulsed by him.
So, the moment he touched my hand, I instinctively pulled back in a panic.
The documents fell to the floor, and I shivered slightly.
Christopher looked up as the documents fell, noticing my reaction. He frowned slightly.
"Mr. Collins, I'm sorry. I didn't hold the documents properly, so they fell," I said, avoiding his deep gaze and quickly bending down to pick up the documents.
"Are you afraid of me or avoiding me?" Christopher asked in a deep voice.
His eyes were fixed on me, as if trying to figure something out.
I knew this would happen. Because of my inner conflict, I was worried I couldn't control my emotions. Even though I had mentally prepared myself, I still gave myself away.
"Mr. Collins, no, you misunderstood," I shook my head, denying it.
Christopher put down the pen he was using to sign, and I faintly heard a sigh.
"Is it because of Marlowe?" Christopher asked.
"What?" I didn't understand how this was related to Marlowe.
Christopher continued, "I had someone investigate. Marlowe's car accident had nothing to do with my family."
So Christopher thought I was afraid because I misunderstood that Marlowe's car accident was the Collins family's doing.
I hadn't even considered that possibility.
