Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 223
"It's my business how I treat Hayes. You're making it sound like I'm some kind of villain! I didn't even do anything that bad. Sure, I might have said a few harsh words, but compared to how he treated me over those blueprints, it's nothing." Marlowe seemed genuinely upset.
From her perspective, she had gone through a lot of trouble to bring Hayes over, but he didn't show any gratitude. Sure, he had his flaws, but now he was upset because of someone else, and he was taking it out on her.
I wanted to say something, but it was clear Marlowe had a bigger grudge against Quinlan. Before I could find the right words, Marlowe had already hung up.
Quinlan had mentioned to me before that she secretly installed cameras in Hayes's house out of concern for him. Given Marlowe's treatment of Hayes, Quinlan, being the kind person she was, would probably go to check on him.
Marlowe was likely not thinking rationally at this point. In her mind, all of Hayes's rebellious behavior was Quinlan's fault, and she might not be very nice to Quinlan.
Quinlan, being small and somewhat frail due to childhood malnutrition, would be at a disadvantage if Marlowe decided to get physical.
I thought about it. Christopher liked Marlowe, and if he took her side, he wouldn't be any help to Quinlan.
The only person I knew who had any influence over Marlowe and who might listen to me was Jason.
I decided to see if he could intervene.
Although I wasn't sure about Jason and Marlowe's relationship, from the few times I'd seen them together, I could tell Jason was a reasonable person, and Marlowe would listen to him.
Unfortunately, when I called, Jason didn't pick up. Given how busy he was, it wasn't surprising.
I then contacted his assistant, Fallon. She confirmed that Jason was indeed very busy.
She could pass on a message if it was about a case, but since this wasn't case-related, Fallon was at a loss.
Luckily, Jason saw my call and found a moment to call me back.
I briefly explained the situation, intending to warn him about Marlowe's current state.
Before I could finish, Jason curtly said, "Got it," and hung up.
His frosty demeanor was even colder than Christopher's. No wonder Fallon said she didn't discuss personal matters with him; he was just too unapproachable.
All I could do was hope nothing bad would happen.
I felt uneasy all night and slept poorly. I didn't hear Christopher's car come back, and the lights in his house, which I could usually see from my place, were off.
The next morning, I didn't see Christopher at breakfast either.
Habits were a powerful thing. I hadn't realized when I got used to having Christopher around for breakfast. Now that he wasn't there, I found myself asking Tiana, "Tiana, where's Christopher? Didn't he come back last night?"
Tiana seemed unfazed, like this wasn't anything out of the ordinary. "He used to not come back often, but since we moved here, this is the first time."
"Moved here? You haven't been here long?" I asked, feeling like I was missing something.
"About seven months. At first, he wasn't here much, but in the last two or three months, he's been staying here regularly and hasn't missed a night."
That was probably the difference with wealthy people. Owning properties all over the city, but with Christopher's personality, it didn't seem like he'd move around so frequently. There must be something I didn't know.
I took a sip of my milk and casually asked, "Where did you live before?"
"In the Amber District."
I recalled the location of the Amber District. Growing up in Starlight City, I knew it well. It was a well-known affluent area, much closer to Summit Innovations Group than here. I wondered why he suddenly decided to move here. But, curiosity aside, the thoughts of the wealthy were beyond us ordinary folks. I didn't dwell on it.
After saying goodbye to Tiana, I drove to the office.
At the reception, I ran into Marlowe, looking as confident as ever. I hadn't seen her in a while, and given her hysterical state yesterday, I expected her to look worn out. But there she was, with softly curled hair, bright yet gentle makeup, wearing a light-colored trench coat and heels. She looked both professional and approachable.
Remembering our unpleasant phone call, I considered pretending not to see her. But Marlowe approached me first. "Hey, Ms. Turner."
Since she greeted me and might be Christopher's future wife, I couldn't ignore her. I smiled and nodded. "Hi, Ms. Grey."
Marlowe continued, "I'm here to see Mr. Collins. As his secretary, could you show me the way?"
I didn't answer immediately but asked the receptionist, "Is Mr. Collins in?"
Given that he hadn't come home last night, I wasn't sure if he was in the office.
The receptionist nodded. "Yes, Mr. Collins is in his office."
With that, I gestured to Marlowe. "Ms. Grey, this way, please."
I had to admire Marlowe's acting skills. She was so calm and polite. Maybe it was because we were at Summit Innovations Group, and she wanted to make a good impression on Christopher.
In the elevator, I tried to keep my distance, wary of any sudden outbursts. But Marlowe smiled and said, "Ms. Turner, I'm sorry about yesterday. I was emotional. I thought about what you said, and you were right. Hayes may have his issues, but he's still a person who deserves respect. I was narrow-minded. Thanks for making me see that. We have no more quarrels. Can we put this behind us and work together?"
She smiled sincerely, and whether she meant it or not, I decided to let bygones be bygones. I shook her hand. "Sure, let's work well together."
