Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 290

I thought it was Tiana, coming to the hospital so quickly.

If I had known, I wouldn't have bothered Christopher to make a special trip.

"Come in!"

Paula and I called out towards the door.

The door opened, but instead of Tiana, someone we were both surprised to see walked in.

"What are you doing here?"

Paula blurted out when she saw Marlowe.

Marlowe didn't seem to care about Paula's attitude and instead looked at me.

"So it's you in the hospital," Marlowe said, almost to herself, and then sat down by my bed.

I took a good look at Marlowe.

It had been a few days since she went missing and was found again.

She looked much thinner, and it was clear from her appearance that she hadn't come to terms with many things.

Her face still showed signs of distress, making her look quite gloomy.

Seeing that I wasn't speaking, Marlowe continued, "I was curious why Mr. Collins came to the hospital so early with a thermos. I wondered which patient was so important to him. I didn't expect it to be you, Ms. Ellis."

"What do you mean?" Paula frowned and said coldly, "Trying to stir up trouble? Well, you're out of luck. I won't touch a man Melinda likes, not even a little."

Marlowe glared at me, clearly unhappy.

She was the type to bully the weak and fear the strong, and knowing Paula's status, she naturally didn't dare to provoke her.

I was curious, "Who told you I was in the hospital?"

As I asked, Paula looked at me, and we exchanged glances.

I knew Paula wanted to ask if I thought Marlowe was behind the kidnapping.

I was only suspicious and couldn't give Paula a definite answer.

Marlowe replied calmly, "I've been bored at the hospital these days, sitting by the window and watching. I happened to see Mr. Collins with a thermos. When I had surgery, he wouldn't even come to see me. How can people be treated so differently?"

Her last words were more like a murmur, like someone who loved but couldn't have.

But neither Paula nor I felt much sympathy.

After all, Marlowe had shown hostility towards me several times, so it was impossible for us to feel sorry for her.

And just now, she tried to sow discord between us.

Paula warned, "You better leave. You're not welcome here. And let me remind you, words can bring trouble. You've already suffered once and almost lost a leg. If you don't take it seriously, you might not be so lucky next time."

"Even if someone covers for you, how can you be sure they'll always be there? Offend too many people, and see who will help you."

Marlowe's face grew even darker, and she glared at us one last time before storming out.

Paula sighed in relief once she was gone.

"She's really shameless. Even when we don't pay attention to her, she still finds a way to cause trouble."

Paula couldn't help but remark.

I comforted her, "Just think of it as watching a play."

Paula thought for a moment and nodded, "True."

That kind of open-mindedness was something even most men didn't have.

Not long after Marlowe left, the paper and pen Christopher had sent arrived.

I drew from memory, and whenever something seemed off, Paula helped fill in the details.

When we finished, Paula couldn't help but give me a thumbs up. "Melinda, you say you're not talented, but look at this. It's so accurate it could be a career."

I looked at the drawing, and it did resemble the kidnapper from my memory. Anyone who saw the drawing and then the kidnapper would recognize them.

It seemed Christopher had given instructions, as the person who brought the paper and pen didn't leave immediately, waiting for the drawing.

We handed over the finished drawing, hoping it would be taken to the police quickly.

With these drawings, they could use big data to match and find the person faster.

We thought we could finally have some peace.

Paula sighed, "I've been so busy, maybe I should take this as a vacation. Living a carefree life isn't so bad."

I was about to remind her that she had just started at the company and shouldn't give up so easily, or she might lose her drive.

The door opened again.

"Are you planning to quit already?" Randy walked in, having overheard Paula, and hurried over, his eyes fixed on Paula's injured hand.

Randy was genuinely worried about Paula, and seeing her injury, he immediately panicked.

"Did the kidnappers hit you? How bad is it? What did the doctor say?"

It was the first time I saw Randy so talkative. I closed my eyes to rest but listened to the commotion, hearing the concern in his voice.

"Paula, your dad and I were so worried when we heard you were kidnapped," said Paula's stepmother, Liliana, a woman who spoke gently.

But whether she was truly kind-hearted, I didn't know.

It was my first time meeting her, but from what Paula had said and her difficult past, I suspected Liliana had something to do with it.

Liliana rushed to grab Paula's hand.

Paula, caught off guard, winced in pain.

Randy, seeing this, couldn't help but scold, "Can't you see her wrist is injured? Are you doing this on purpose?"

Paula sneered, "Isn't it obvious? Of course, it's on purpose. How could someone visiting a patient not know where they're hurt? It's just not caring enough."

Liliana looked aggrieved, "Paula, you don't have to like me, but why speak ill of me to your father? I've never had any ill intentions towards you. Why can't you let it go?"

Randy, who shared a bed with Liliana, softened at her words.

Paula, having long seen Randy as unreliable, snorted in disapproval.

Randy wanted to comfort Liliana, but Paula's snort reminded him of her injury.

He turned coldly to Liliana, "This kidnapping better have nothing to do with them, or don't blame me for being ruthless."

Liliana, clearly afraid of Randy, trembled and quickly said, "It won't. They're family. They wouldn't hurt her."

Paula didn't speak, just let out a mocking laugh.

Liliana nervously explained, "Paula, your siblings wouldn't hurt you."

Paula remained silent.

Last time, Pippa had been encouraged to attack her without mercy.

So how could she believe they didn't intend to harm her?

Randy seemed to remember the last incident and his face darkened.

He coldly scolded Liliana, "Didn't you call them to see Paula? Where are they?"

Liliana, not daring to defy him, quickly replied, "They're on their way. I already told them."
