I calmly relayed my conversation with Faye to Christopher.

Christopher's gaze was fixed on me.

"No misunderstanding. I just saw through her a long time ago and know what kind of person she is."

His next words made me feel a pang of sympathy for her.

"She's always pretending to be a loving mother, so much so that she believes it herself." Christopher's lips curled in a mocking smile.

Feeling frustrated, I glared at Christopher and retorted, "Fine, I won't compete with Biscuit. I'll compete with you. How about that?"

Both Christopher and I were stunned by my boldness.

How could I be so daring? It sounded like I was comparing him to Biscuit.

Christopher, with his pride, could be terrifying if angered.

Alarmed, I quickly said, "It's getting late. I should head back."

Without waiting for his response, I got up and walked out.

As I stepped outside, I heard footsteps behind me. Turning around, I met Christopher's deep gaze.

Christopher spoke first, "I'll walk you home."

"No, it's just a few steps away," I declined, not stopping.

But Christopher ignored my refusal and followed me out.

He walked a couple of steps behind me, all the way to my door. He watched me calmly, signaling for me to go inside.

I thanked him and entered the yard. As I closed the door, cutting off his gaze, I knew he hadn't left. Only when the house lights came on did I hear his footsteps fading away.

Christopher could be overly responsible at times, worrying about such a short distance.

That was why, even though I had been distant and cold to him because of Lawrence, he still protected me because of my parents' words.

That night, I had a strange dream. I couldn't remember the details, but Christopher was in it.

Christopher's smile was faint. "Your boss is delivering documents while you sit idle? Seems like your position is unnecessary."
