Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 128
"Melinda, you can't get away!" Lawrence was already up and chasing after me.
Stella clung to Lawrence, refusing to let go. "You can't leave! If you go, you have to take me with you! Don't leave!"
Lawrence, furious, kicked Stella to the ground with a loud thud.
I didn't dare hesitate for a second. If he could be so cruel to Stella, he wouldn't show any mercy to me.
But no matter how hard I pressed the elevator button, it wouldn't come.
Right, the stairs. I abandoned the elevator and ran towards the stairwell.
"Melinda, do you really think you can get away?"
Even though I started running first, Lawrence quickly caught up.
I was so scared that I slipped, tumbling down the stairs until I landed on the next floor.
Dizzy and disoriented from the fall, I struggled to get up.
"You wretch, even God is on my side. Go to hell!" Lawrence laughed maniacally as he approached me.
I tried to get up, but my hands failed me multiple times.
Lawrence was getting closer and closer.
Despair filled my heart. Was I really going to die here today?
"Lawrence, you can't leave! You promised to take me abroad! Take me with you."
Just as Lawrence was about to reach me, Stella, her head bleeding, clung to him desperately, refusing to let him go.
I could tell from her eyes that she was barely conscious. But her obsession with Lawrence taking her abroad made her hold on to him tightly.
No matter how harsh or sweet his words, Stella wouldn't let go, insisting he take her with him.
Taking advantage of Stella's distraction, I summoned all my strength, driven by a powerful will to survive, and finally managed to stand up.
I stumbled down the stairs.
Suddenly, Stella's scream pierced the air, followed by the sickening sound of a knife plunging into flesh and her agonized moans.
My face turned pale. Lawrence had killed Stella. He was in a murderous frenzy, and soon I couldn't hear any sound from Stella. Was she dead?
Lawrence was a monster. Even at this point, he dragged someone else down with him.
I cursed him silently as I ran. But no matter how hard I tried to speed up, my legs wouldn't cooperate, stumbling and weak.
Heavy footsteps followed closely behind.
"Melinda, go to hell!" Lawrence was almost upon me.
The stairs seemed endless, like a bottomless pit. Then Lawrence grabbed my hair, and I collapsed to the ground. His blood-stained knife dripped onto me.
Despair sapped the last of my strength. I looked into Lawrence's bloodthirsty eyes, my mind going blank, unable to struggle anymore.
I thought, 'Sorry, Paula, I broke my promise. And Christopher, I'm sorry for being so foolish. After all you've done for me, I can't even thank you. Mom, Dad, I'm coming to see you.'
I closed my eyes in despair.
"Melinda, you know what's good for you." Lawrence, seeing my eyes close in defeat, raised his knife with a sense of accomplishment.
Suddenly, a loud noise erupted, but the expected pain didn't come. A strong hand pulled me into a cool embrace.
The embrace was solid, giving me an overwhelming sense of safety.
The familiar scent of sandalwood told me who it was. Tears welled up as I looked up at the man holding me. "Christopher, you're here. Be careful, Lawrence has a knife."
I thought the police would find my dead body, but Christopher always arrived first.
Just in time. If he had been a moment later, I would be dead. I quickly warned him.
Lawrence's eyes blazed as he saw Christopher protecting me.
My concerned warning only made him more frenzied. "Christopher, you're too late! Today, you won't take her away. In fact, you'll leave your life here too."
Christopher's cold gaze swept over my injuries before he looked at Lawrence with icy disdain. "I might be late, but you're the one who's lost."
His words only fueled Lawrence's rage.
Lawrence lunged at him with the knife. "I haven't lost! I'll never lose! All of you, die with me!"
"Christopher, watch out for the knife!" I screamed in fear.
Christopher's arm around my waist moved, pulling me aside with his strong grip.
He sidestepped Lawrence's attack with precision. At the same time, he kicked Lawrence in the stomach.
Though we were at a disadvantage on the lower stairs, Christopher turned it to his advantage, dodging Lawrence and kicking him down the stairs.
"Stay here and wait for me, okay?" Christopher's deep voice gave me a sense of security. I nodded, holding back the pain as he placed me in a corner.
Then he walked down the stairs towards Lawrence.
Lawrence wiped the blood from his mouth, not fleeing but struggling to stand, glaring at Christopher. "Christopher, why do you always look down on me? What makes you so superior? If I had your background, you'd be nothing, not even fit to shine my shoes."
Christopher's lips curled in a mocking smile. "Delusional. Even if you were born into the best family, you'd still ruin yourself. A rotten heart can't be saved."
"Shut up! You still look down on me! When you're dead, I'll be the winner. I haven't lost!"
Lawrence, enraged by Christopher's calm and noble demeanor, lunged at him with the knife again.
Though I knew Christopher was skilled, Lawrence's reckless attack worried me.
"Christopher, be careful! We can run and wait for the police to handle him." My voice trembled with fear.
Christopher didn't look back. He deftly avoided Lawrence's knife, grabbing his wrist and forcing him to drop the weapon.
Then, he punched Lawrence in the face. One punch, two punches, three punches...
Lawrence initially resisted, but soon it was a one-sided beating from Christopher.
