Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 234
As we headed upstairs, the property management team was already at the door.
Christopher took the lead and asked, "What's going on?"
At first, the property manager seemed pretty cautious. But once they realized we were friends of Marlowe and had contacted them ourselves, they relaxed a bit.
They explained the situation."About an hour ago, Ms. Grey called the police. After the police left, we checked the surveillance footage and confirmed she hadn't left. But when we knocked on her door just now, there was no response. I'm worried something might have happened to her, so I called a locksmith."
Just as the property manager finished speaking, a locksmith arrived, carrying a toolbox and wearing a uniform.
He took out his tools and started working on the lock, making some noise.
From inside the apartment, a sharp voice trembled, "Who are you? Get out of here, or I'll call the police! I'm not afraid of you. I already dealt with your people earlier. If you try anything else, the police will be here in no time."
"Ms. Grey, please calm down. There's no need to be afraid. We're from the property management, not the people who have been threatening you. We were worried because we couldn't reach you, so we called a locksmith. Since you're home, we won't break the lock. Please open the door. Your friends are here too."
Instead of calming Marlowe down, the property manager's words made her even more agitated. "I don't believe you. You're trying to trick me into coming out. I'm not stupid. You can't fool me."
Seeing Marlowe so on edge, I whispered to Christopher, "Mr. Collins, maybe you should say something."
After all, Marlowe liked him. His voice was unique and would surely help soothe her.
I stepped aside to let Christopher stand in front.
He spoke in a deep voice, "Ms. Grey, it's us!"
Marlowe's voice was filled with relief, "Christopher?"
Christopher's tone was emotionless, "Yes."
The next moment, the door opened, and Marlowe, with tears in her eyes, rushed towards Christopher. "Christopher, you're finally here. I was so scared..."
But then, Christopher pulled me forward, pushing me into her path. Marlowe ended up in my arms instead.
I was at a loss, unsure whether to comfort her or not.
Was Christopher doing this to protect Marlowe's reputation because the property management was present? But wouldn't it be better to show some affection and comfort her?
Marlowe quickly realized it wasn't Christopher holding her and stepped back, sparing me the trouble of figuring out how to console her.
I saw a fleeting look of disappointment in her eyes.
With us there, the property management and the locksmith left.
Christopher got straight to the point, "Are you sure it was someone from Vanguard Motors, Inc?"
Marlowe shook her head, then nodded. "I haven't offended anyone else. And this afternoon, I already received a warning and even got hurt. Look."
She lifted her arm, revealing a half-inch long cut on her pale skin. Fortunately, it didn't look too deep.
As she rolled up her sleeve, she looked at Christopher with tearful eyes, her expression pitiful. She was quite attractive, and in this state, Christopher, who liked her, should have been more sympathetic.
But Christopher remained stoic, his tone cold. "I'll have someone investigate who hurt you. If you're sure it was someone from Vanguard Motors, Inc, then I suggest you let Jason accompany you to their office later."
Marlowe's expression stiffened. She glanced outside. "Maybe we should talk inside."
I felt like I should leave.
But Christopher grabbed my arm and followed her inside, letting go of me once we were in.
Inside, Marlowe started to cry. "Christopher, if Jason goes with me, it will be seen as a provocation. You..."
"I only provide suggestions. The decision is yours," Christopher interrupted her.
Marlowe was momentarily speechless.
I didn't expect Christopher to be so cold towards someone he liked.
Christopher continued, "This situation is your own doing. I warned you that Vanguard Motors, Inc isn't stupid. If you didn't warn them in advance, it's no surprise they misunderstood and targeted you."
I was speechless. Was this how he talked to someone he liked? He might as well have said Marlowe deserved it.
Marlowe stammered, "I didn't ignore your advice. I was just scared. The penalty for breaching the contract is too high. I can't afford it!"
Christopher frowned.
I was involved in drafting the contract, so I knew why he was frowning. We had accounted for the possibility of her breaching the contract with Vanguard Motors, Inc and included it in the costs.
So, I explained this to her.
Marlowe glanced at me, then explained, "I wanted to save more for Hayes. In case something happens in the future, he would have something to rely on."
Marlowe was a good sister. If only she had respected Hayes from the start, this situation wouldn't have arisen.
But now that it had, there was no other solution. It was decided she would talk to the CEO of Vanguard Motors, Inc.
Christopher stood up, ready to leave.
Marlowe panicked and grabbed his sleeve. "Christopher, you're leaving? What about me? I'm scared to be alone!"
Christopher looked at her. "The people of Vanguard Motors, Inc won't come tonight. I'll have the property management keep an eye out. Lock your door."
He glanced at me, signaling for me to follow.
I felt awkward. If I followed, Christopher would miss another chance to be with Marlowe.
I opened my mouth to suggest, "Maybe I should drive..."
"Let's go," Christopher cut me off, walking out.
Marlowe, with tears in her eyes, followed us. "What if they come back tomorrow morning when I leave?"
Christopher only said, "Contact Jason and Vanguard Motors, Inc as soon as possible."
I wondered if Christopher was angry with Marlowe. He had warned her to keep a low profile and not let Vanguard Motors, Inc know about her dealings with AutoForge Workshop, to avoid provoking them.
But she hadn't listened, and now she was in this mess. Maybe that was why he was so cold.
Marlowe shouldn't have been so foolish.
