"They look like a perfect couple. No wonder they have such great chemistry."

"Then why don't we have that kind of chemistry? Are we not in sync?"

"Come on, you don't look that smart. Look at them, they just exude intelligence. Sweetie, let's not compare ourselves to them."

I overheard the couple's conversation, and my face turned red. I wasn't sure if it was from the excitement of the bumper cars or if I was just getting hot.

My leg was almost touching Christopher's, and with his long legs, I felt awkward asking him to move. But why did I feel his body heat through our clothes? Maybe it was just me feeling hot.

Luckily, Christopher was focused on the car, probably not noticing any of this. It was just my overactive imagination.

As I got more comfortable and skilled at driving, we became the undefeated car on the track, drawing envious looks. I felt like I had overcome my fear.

We played for a full hour and a half. Christopher, the CEO of Summit Innovations Group, could make money faster than picking it up off the ground. I had to thank him for spending so much time with me.

"Christopher, thanks a lot for today. Dinner's on me tonight," I suggested with a smile, still flushed from the excitement.

Christopher pointed to my pocket. "No rush. You should probably return that call. Your phone's been ringing non-stop."

I saw several missed calls from Paula and remembered something important. I sent a vague text earlier, worried Christopher might overhear, so I stepped away to call her back.

"Melinda, are you trying to scare me to death? Do you know what you texted me? I thought you were kidnapped or something! I was about to call the police. Do you know where I am?"

"Where?"

"At the police station! If you hadn't called back, I would've reported you missing," Paula yelled, clearly shaken.

"I'm so sorry. It was my fault. I'll explain everything later and treat you to a big meal."

Christopher was still waiting, so I quickly ended the call after assuring Paula I was fine.

"Sorry, that was Paula. You must be hungry. There's a place nearby we can eat, and we might still make it back in time for your meeting," I suggested, checking the time.

Christopher initially suggested, "How about we eat and then try a few more rides?"

I could already imagine being exhausted and needing Christopher to carry me out. No way.

Seeing my firm refusal, Christopher said, "Bungee jumping and roller coasters are scary, but we can do something you like."

"No!" I quickly waved my hands.

Christopher's eyes darkened. "Seems like I'm boring company at the amusement park."

Sensing his displeasure, I explained, "Not at all. I'm grateful you spent so much time with me on the bumper cars. I know you're busy, and I feel guilty taking up more of your time."

Christopher's mood seemed to improve after my explanation. He seemed a bit proud, caring about others' opinions but not wanting to show it.

Making Christopher happy wasn't a bad thing.

That night, I couldn't sleep, maybe from the day's excitement. I kept thinking about the compliments we got as a couple and the moments our legs and bodies touched. Despite the cooling weather, I felt warm inside.

After drinking a big glass of cold water, I still couldn't sleep. I decided to test my fear by driving. I took out my favorite small Audi from the garage and drove around, feeling confident and unafraid.

As I drove back, I passed Christopher's house and saw his car. He noticed me and rolled down his window. "What are you doing?"

"I couldn't sleep, so I went for a drive. It went well," I said with a small, proud smile.

Christopher complimented me, "Nice job!" and told me to rest early as he had to go out.

Just as I was about to leave, he added, "I'm handling something related to Paula."

Hearing it involved Paula and required Christopher's personal attention, I felt a pang of worry. Without asking for details, I parked my car, unbuckled, and quickly got into his passenger seat.

"What's wrong with Paula?" I asked, knowing she would contact me first if something was wrong. I trusted her completely and didn't suspect any romantic involvement.

"Sit tight," Christopher said, not explaining further. I would find out soon enough.

I had ridden with Christopher before, and while his driving was usually smooth, this time he drove much faster, indicating the urgency.

I didn't want to distract him but couldn't stop my mind from racing. My hand holding the grab handle was sweating, but I didn't ask Christopher any more questions.
