The legal team at Summit Innovations Group was definitely impressive.

But Jason wasn't one to be underestimated either.

I couldn't help but wonder, "Do you think Marlowe will still try to ask Mr. Cook for help? Would he even agree to it?"

"Who knows? He used to have quite the reputation, and I thought he was really something. But seeing how he's handling Marlowe, I'm not so sure anymore. Who knows if he'll mess up this time."

Paula seemed to have a negative opinion about Jason.

"Maybe not. After all, Mr. Cook did conspire with Mr. Collins to set Marlowe up. If she finds out she was played, she'll probably lose it. She'd never expect Mr. Cook to do something like that."

"People who do bad things will eventually get what's coming to them," Paula said disdainfully.

I remembered something more important. "Mr. Collins mentioned that Marlowe had another contract ready. She's just a magazine editor, so she probably didn't draft it herself. There must be someone else behind it!"

But who? Was it someone following Marlowe's instructions, or was that person the real mastermind?

Honestly, Marlowe was just too much.

I still didn't know what happened back then. Sometimes, when I saw Jason and Marlowe together, it didn't seem like there was any romantic involvement. If that was the case, why did he indulge her so unconditionally, helping her with everything she wanted? It was almost like he granted her every wish.

Whatever happened back then must have been profound enough to make him act this way, almost changing his entire personality.

Now Christopher was suspicious. Hopefully, his investigation would reveal something mild, so Jason wouldn'tbe trapped in the past, unable to move on.

Paula and I had been recovering from our injuries these past few days, and we had fallen behind on work.

She managed to squeeze in some time despite her busy schedule. After discussing the important matters, we quickly hung up and got back to work.

Vincent was concerned about my health and hesitant to give me any files to handle.

I reassured him, "My hand is fine now, and I have Mr. Collins' approval. If there's anything you need me to handle, just give it to me."

"Alright, Ms. Turner, please deliver this file to Mr. Collins."

As he spoke, Vincent handed me a file.

I regretted speaking up. If it were any other file, I could handle it, but now I had to face Christopher, and I was a bit apprehensive.

But it was too late to refuse.

I took the file to the CEO's office.

I didn't expect to run into Jason, who was there to see Christopher.

He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes.

It was the first time I'd seen Jason in such a state.

I always thought of Jason as energetic and capable.

But now, he looked defeated.

"Mr. Cook!" I greeted him.

Since we were heading to the same place, we weren't far apart.

Jason nodded at me and suddenly stepped closer, asking in a low voice, "At the hospital that day, Christopher told you the kidnapping case was over. Do you know that I requested it?"

I was too upset at the time to think about it, and I thought I understood Christopher.

But later, when I calmed down, I did consider the possibility.

I didn't answer directly. Instead, I asked, "What difference does it make if I know or not? Or do you want me to hold a grudge against you, Mr. Cook?"

Jason seemed taken aback by my response.

I started to walk past him.

Jason caught up and asked, "Do you care?"

I paused, finding his question amusing.

"Does it matter if I care? Will you stop protecting Marlowe?"

Once again, he had no answer and chose to remain silent.

Sometimes, silence was an answer.

Whether I cared or not, he would still help Marlowe.

We entered the office together, and Christopher was busy with paperwork.

I handed over the file, and Christopher looked up, glancing at me before focusing on the weary Jason.

Christopher frowned, clearly noticing Jason's unusual state. "Get him a strong cup of tea!"

To help him wake up!

"Got it!" I quickly prepared a strong cup of tea, not too bitter.

After placing the tea in front of Jason, I saw they had started talking and left to give them space.

But Christopher called me back, "You're a victim in this. Since it involves you, stay and listen."

I was curious about the follow-up on the kidnapping case, so I sat down.

"Marlowe made a mistake, and I apologize on her behalf. But she's injured and has mental health issues. Can you let it go and not hold it against her?"

Jason was still defending Marlowe.

Christopher's sharp tongue was in full force. "What does her health have to do with us? Even if she apologized in person, do you think we'd forgive her? The damage is done. There's no easy forgiveness in this world."

Jason's face darkened.

He held back and said, "She acted out of desperation."

"So what?"

Christopher sneered, "Actions have consequences. She can't blame me for sending her on a business trip. I warned her to stay away from certain people. She got herself into trouble by provoking the locals. That's on her. If she resents me, she should come after me. But she hurt innocent people, and she has to face the consequences."

"She's Hayes' guardian, and Hayes is crucial to our company. If you agree to forgive her, I'll have her sign a lifetime contract for Hayes."

Jason was using Marlowe's tactics.

I saw the disappointment in Christopher's eyes.

Honestly, my view of Jason was shattered.

Marlowe had almost ruined him.

Christopher didn't say whether he forgave her or not. Instead, he asked for my opinion.

"It's up to you whether you want to forgive her."

He was backing me up.

I looked at Jason. "Mr. Cook, have you ever considered that your unconditional indulgence is part of why Marlowe is so reckless? She knows you'll always clean up her messes."

Jason seemed to take in my words, looking momentarily stunned.
