Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 300
"Paula, I still want to go back to the office, even if I can only help a little," I said, finally making up my mind.
Maybe this way, I could feel a bit more at ease.
I packed my laptop into my bag and got ready to change clothes. Before that, I asked Paula, "I'll face Mr. Collins at the company, but what about your dad?"
After all, this kidnapping incident involved Paula. Christopher had mentioned that Randy still cared about Paula, and I was worried that Randy might be upset with him because of it.
Randy's influence was significant, and at this critical moment, even a slight disapproval from him could be disastrous for both Christopher and AutoForge Workshop.
Paula, however, seemed unconcerned. "Don't worry, my dad won't care about this. As long as it doesn't involve my stepmother or his sons, he won't be too bothered."
"How can you say that? Mr. Ellis must care about you. Otherwise, he wouldn't have rushed over when you got hurt."
Paula scoffed, "That's because I still have value to him. He's probably more worried that one of his sons might be behind the kidnapping. It's not about caring for me; it's about maintaining the family's reputation and avoiding a scandal."
"Paula..."
Hearing her say that made my heart ache a little.
Paula, on the other hand, seemed relaxed. "Alright, let's get ready. I'll go with you and drop you off at the office."
"You're leaving too?"
"Of course. Without you, I can't sleep alone!"
Paula's lighthearted joke reassured me that she was really okay.
Once we were both dressed, we drove to the company. On the way, Paula comforted me, "Don't worry too much. You have me, the most experienced person in this area. I won't let the situation get worse. Just watch."
With Paula's help, I felt more confident.
I was about to thank her when she cut me off, "Don't thank me on behalf of Mr. Collins. If I want a thank-you gift, I'll ask him myself. Every time you speak, you act like his wife."
I blushed, feeling a bit guilty. I turned my head to avoid Paula's gaze and stayed silent.
Soon, we arrived at Summit Innovations Group. Paula reminded me to take care of my hand before she left.
I quickly headed to the office floor. The atmosphere was tense, probably due to the ongoing media frenzy.
A colleague who knew me was surprised to see me. "Ms. Turner, what are you doing here? Weren't you hospitalized?"
Her genuine concern warmed my heart. This incident had dragged me into the spotlight, and some people were understandably upset with me. But this colleague didn't blame me; instead, she cared about me.
I thanked her and assured her, "I'm fine, almost fully recovered."
She sighed in relief and comforted me, "Don't worry about the online stuff. Those people are just following the crowd. They don't know the truth. I believe in you. And Mr. Collins isn't that kind of person. I trust him."
She even praised Christopher, "Once, I made a mistake in a document that almost caused a big problem. Mr. Collins personally taught me how to correct it and avoid similar mistakes in the future. He's a great boss who wouldn't trade employee well-being for profit."
I wondered if Christopher would feel gratified hearing this. Such high praise from employees was an honor.
I couldn't help but smile and nod, "Yeah, Mr. Collins is the best boss."
Just then, there was a commotion at the door. My colleague and I looked over to see uniformed police officers.
"We're from the Starlight City Police Department. We're here to see Christopher regarding a case," one officer said.
The police had arrived quickly, and there were probably reporters downstairs. This kind of publicity was even worse for Christopher.
But this was something only Christopher could handle.
"Please wait. I'll inform Mr. Collins in his office," I said to the officers.
I hurried to Christopher's office. He looked tired but calm, which reassured me. His composure suggested that things weren't as bad as they seemed.
"Mr. Collins, the police are here to see you about the case."
Christopher looked surprised to see me but quickly said, "Bring them to the meeting room. I'll finish these documents and be right there."
"Okay!"
I nodded and was about to leave when Christopher's gaze fell on my wrist. He asked with concern, "How's your hand?"
His concern warmed my heart and made it flutter. If this continued, I wouldn't be able to control my feelings for him.
But remembering that night and our respective positions, I had to suppress my emotions.
I lowered my eyes and replied calmly, "Thanks for asking, Mr. Collins. My hand's fine now."
Christopher reminded me, "Don't strain it too much. Take care."
"Okay!"
I led the police to the meeting room and prepared tea for them. Christopher arrived shortly after. The officers showed their badges and got straight to the point.
"We need your cooperation regarding the kidnapping of Melinda and Paula," one officer said.
"Of course," Christopher replied calmly, without a hint of panic.
Seeing him so composed, I felt a bit more at ease.
The police asked if Christopher needed a lawyer, but he declined. He had studied law and knew how to handle these situations.
The questioning began with routine details like his name, age, and address. Then they moved on to the main topic.
They asked if he knew Marlowe. The answer was yes.
They then inquired about how long they had known each other. I learned that Marlowe was a college friend of both Christopher and Jason.
The police pressed further, "Is that the only relationship?"
Christopher paused and added, "We also have a business relationship."
The officer frowned, clearly looking for a different answer. "There's a rumor that you two are in a romantic relationship."
I couldn't help but look at Christopher.
"No, aside from work, we have no other connection," Christopher said firmly.
"The kidnapper claimed you made a deal with Marlowe: you would secure her brother's lifelong contract in exchange for destroying evidence of her crimes. Is that true?"
Finally, the crucial question!
Standing nearby, I couldn't help but feel nervous and scared, waiting anxiously for Christopher's answer.
