Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 310
"Still working on it. I'll let you know when I'm ready to make a move," Paula said with a hint of mystery.
"Why the sudden urge to act? Did Liliana start causing trouble after you joined the company?" Despite Paula's tough exterior, she had a soft heart.
Paula's face hardened at the mention of Liliana. "She really pushed my buttons! She wants to be buried with my parents someday. Honestly, if she just wanted to be next to my dad, I wouldn't care. But dragging my mom into it? That's crossing the line. She needs to learn there are consequences for messing with me!"
I could see Paula was genuinely angry. "Alright, don't get too worked up. She's not worth it. What did Mr. Ellis decide?" I patted Paula's hand reassuringly.
Paula's expression softened a bit. "He's totally under Liliana's spell. Even if he hasn't agreed yet, he probably will if I don't step in."
Paula had little respect for Randy. She continued, "Remember the jade bracelet Faye gave me the other day? It wasn't cheap, and I posted about it."
I caught on quickly. "So, she thinks some rich guy gave you that bracelet and is worried you might have found a boyfriend with a good background?"
Paula scoffed. "Probably."
I shook my head. "On the surface, finding a guy with a similar background seems good. But if you want the Ellis Group's inheritance, it might be better to find someone with a weaker background who can join your family."
Paula playfully pinched my cheek. "That's why I say you get me, Melinda. Liliana could never think that far ahead."
We decided to change the subject. Paula's phone rang again, but she was focused on driving through an intersection, so I checked the caller ID for her.
"It's your dad."
Paula acknowledged but didn't answer right away. She dropped me off at my apartment complex. "You go on in. I'll head home. Call you later," she said, waving goodbye.
I reminded her, "If you want the Ellis family inheritance, you should at least keep things civil with Mr. Ellis. If he calls again, you should answer and see what he wants."
"Got it. Now go on," Paula said, rolling up her window and driving off after sending a message to Christopher.
I headed to Christopher's place because my dog, Sunny, was there. Biscuit, who used to be wary of me, now wagged its tail happily and even nuzzled me. I loved its soft fur and couldn't resist petting it. "Biscuit is so cute," I praised.
Sunny, possibly jealous, nudged my hand away. Just when I thought Sunny was still loyal to me, it used its large body to block my hand and nuzzled Biscuit instead. It seemed it was jealous of me petting Biscuit.
"Still ignoring me, huh? Well, I'm taking you home, Sunny!" I pretended to be stern and tried to pull Sunny away. Sunny, reluctant to leave, clung to Biscuit and whimpered pitifully.
I relented, "Fine, you can play a bit longer, but just for a while, then we're going home."
I let go of Sunny's leash, and it immediately snuggled up to Biscuit. Biscuit, calm and quiet, stayed near its dog bed, occasionally nudging my leg. I sat by its bed and played with its toys. Biscuit played with me at first, but then it joined Sunny, and I watched them play until I dozed off.
When I woke up, I didn't know how long I'd been asleep. I tried to stand, but my legs were numb from lying awkwardly. I stumbled forward, and just as I was about to fall, Christopher, who had just come in, rushed over and caught me.
"Thanks," I said, still shaken. Looking up, I saw his chiseled jawline and soft-looking lips. A thought crossed my mind: they looked very kissable. Shocked by my own thoughts, I quickly looked down to hide my blushing face.
"I need to sit down; my leg's asleep," I said, trying to find an excuse for Christopher to let go.
Christopher helped me to a seat. I wondered why he was back so soon, but before I could ask, he grabbed my calf. "Mr. Collins, what are you doing? No, you don't have to!"
His cool hand on my leg sent a shiver through me, making me stutter. "Your leg's asleep. It needs a massage," he said.
As I lowered my head, I caught sight of his lowered gaze and the flutter of his eyelashes, which made me marvel. Christopher, a man, probably had longer eyelashes than many women.
But that wasn't the point.
I shook off these thoughts from my mind and adjusted my leg, "I can massage it myself."
"It's not the first time. Are you comfortable bending over? Or are you feeling shy?" he said calmly, his tone making it hard to refuse.
I let him massage my leg, his touch firm yet gentle. I couldn't help but wonder if he'd done this for other girls or someone he liked. Jealousy crept in, and my thoughts drifted.
I didn't notice when Christopher finished until he spoke. I thanked him and tried to stand, but Sunny had snuck up beside me. Distracted by Christopher, I didn't see Sunny and tripped over the coffee table.
I fell backward, heading straight for the bookshelf. Christopher caught me just in time, one hand protecting my head and the other around my waist, preventing me from hitting the shelf.
