Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 296
Jason tightened his grip on her elbow again and said in a low voice, "Let's take care of that wound first."
Paula wasn't having it.
She probably thought Jason was doing this for Marlowe, which made her a bit angry.
"Jason, you're a top lawyer. So many people are watching you. Getting involved with me could damage your reputation!"
She tried to pry his fingers off her elbow with her other hand.
Jason let go of her elbow, only to envelop her hand in his large palm.
I was stunned by this scene.
I had heard from more than one person who had interacted with him, including his student Fallon, that he was a very self-controlled person, indifferent, and disliked any close contact with women.
Fallon had even once complained, "Mr. Cook is so distant from women and has such a good relationship with Mr. Collins that I almost thought he liked men!"
I couldn't blame her for the misunderstanding. If it weren't for Jason's unique behavior towards Marlowe, I might have thought he and Christopher were a couple.
But I had never seen Jason act even slightly ambiguous with Marlowe.
Paula's face turned bright red as he held her hand.
Usually sharp-tongued, Paula almost stuttered, "Are you..." Flirting with me?
I knew what Paula was trying to say.
But Jason didn't give her a chance to finish. His voice was firm, "Let's get that wound treated first!"
Then, I watched as Jason forcefully pulled Paula away.
I tried to stop Jason.
Paula, who had been resisting, suddenly stopped struggling and gave me a subtle look when Jason wasn't paying attention.
Our mutual understanding was so strong that I immediately got what Paula meant.
Given Paula's personality, her sudden compliance meant she had something to gain.
I hadn't forgotten the evidence Jason and Marlowe had mentioned earlier.
I understood!
Paula probably wanted to get Jason alone to extract some evidence from him.
But I wasn't very optimistic.
Jason had handled countless cases and dealt with numerous people. Many had likely tried to get what they wanted from him. His ability to win cases meant he was good at keeping evidence secure.
And he was determined to protect Marlowe.
Paula had a tough road ahead!
Once Jason and Paula left, it was just me and Marlowe.
Marlowe seemed to dislike me so much that she didn't even want to look at me. She turned her wheelchair, ready to leave.
But I wasn't done with her. No way was I letting her go.
"We have unfinished business. Where do you think you're going?" I coldly demanded.
Marlowe kept up her act, "What business? There's nothing to talk about."
"Nothing to talk about? How about kidnapping me?" I stared at Marlowe, as if trying to bore a hole through her.
Marlowe sneered, "What a joke. You can say whatever you want, but you better have proof!"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about. You look decent, but you're so malicious." I used to think she just had a bad temper, but I never expected her to be so vicious.
Marlowe glared at me, her eyes dark, "What right do you have to call me malicious? Do you have any proof it was me? Making false accusations can have consequences. I wouldn't mind calling the police to educate you on the law."
I wasn't afraid.
"Go ahead, call them. I'd love for you to do that."
"You're crazy!" Marlowe was so provoked that she wanted to escape immediately.
But I wasn't about to let her leave. With a bit of force, she, being in a wheelchair, couldn't get away.
"Let go! Melinda, can you be any more shameless?" Her angry, accusing eyes made it seem like I was the one bullying her.
This wasn't bullying; it was payback.
So, it was justified!
I sneered, "Compared to you, I can't even come close to being shameless."
"Shut up, Melinda. I told you it wasn't me. Blame yourself for making so many enemies. Do you really think you're that irresistible?" Marlowe snapped.
"Marlowe, do you really think you covered your tracks that well?" I retorted.
Marlowe frowned, "I told you it wasn't me. Besides, I didn't have the time or the motive!"
"No motive? I know you had plenty of motive. And as for time, didn't you disappear for a while? During that time, everyone was looking for you, but you had plenty of time to do things."
Marlowe's face darkened as she listened to my analysis.
"That's just your speculation. I was in a bad state then. How could I have had the mind to do those things?"
"No, you were very clear-headed. And I know more than you think. For example, Alvin met with you before you disappeared. I can guess what you two talked about."
Marlowe was so angered by my analysis that she laughed, "Your illogical reasoning is laughable. A boss checking on his employee is perfectly normal, yet you turn it into a conspiracy theory. Ridiculous!"
I wasn't fazed by her sarcasm.
I continued, "Alvin wasn't just checking on you. He was telling you that you were being sent to Emberfall City because of Christopher."
That seemed to hit a nerve with Marlowe.
She reacted strongly, her voice suddenly sharp, "So, you're here to mock me, to laugh at my self-delusion, and to flaunt that Christopher values you more? Are you proud of yourself?"
I was speechless.
So, this was what she thought.
Once someone had a bias against another, it was hard to change.
Marlowe had disliked me from the start, and no matter what happened, she still saw me the same way.
Seeing me silent, Marlowe continued, "But so what? No matter what I did, he still indulges me because Hayes is my brother, and I have his guardianship. And he cares about AutoForge Workshop's future."
Her words made my face darken.
She wasn't wrong. Hayes was indeed crucial to AutoForge Workshop.
But she underestimated Christopher. Was he someone who could be easily threatened?
If someone else held the reins, there would be no room for growth.
So, how could Christopher be easily manipulated?
"You're wrong!"
"You're wrong!"
I started to tell Marlowe, but another voice echoed mine.
I turned to see Christopher's serious, calm face.
I didn't know if it was because we said the same thing, or because his presence alone could clear all the fog.
I instinctively smiled at him, "Mr. Collins, you're here!"
Christopher responded in a low voice, then looked at Marlowe.
I noticed Marlowe's gaze fixed on me, or rather, on my smiling face upon seeing Christopher.
Christopher seemed to sense Marlowe's cold, dangerous look at me, and his presence became even more imposing.
The air around us seemed to freeze due to his powerful, cold aura.
Marlowe also sensed Christopher's icy, forceful gaze, and her face turned very unpleasant.
"You should go back. I need to talk to Ms. Grey," Christopher said to me gently.
I nodded, "Okay!"
Without paying any more attention to Marlowe's look, I turned and left.
