Second Chance: Marrying into Wealth Chapter 104
"Melinda, keep that confidence. It's exactly what Summit Innovations Group needs."
Paula started off encouragingly, then added sympathetically, "Melinda, I know you've been through a lot, but when you took that risk, you had to consider all possible outcomes."
"The company picks talent based on their interests. They try to get a good read on new employees in the short time of an interview."
"You put your personal life, personality, and even your skills out there early on, giving them a first impression. Naturally, they have a more direct and deeper understanding of you compared to others. The company will then consider everything and eliminate uncertainties."
"But because of the live stream incident, they might see you as an uncertainty."
Despite her words, I still felt uneasy. "I had no other choice back then. Judging me as manipulative based on that is too one-sided."
Paula chuckled, "Think of these companies as bad guys! Bad guys switch partners quickly, always looking out for their own interests. They quickly choose the most suitable match and decide if it's worth investing time in you."
She was spot on. I thought about it and realized she was right.
"Paula, your analogy is perfect. So, Christopher is the bad guy you're talking about? What if he finds out you said that?"
"Melinda, I'm trying to comfort you. You wouldn't tell Christopher, would you? Are you really going to ditch me for him?" Paula joked.
My face turned red. "Stop talking nonsense! If you keep it up, I might just tell Christopher you called him a bad guy. But I have to defend Christopher. He's always been decent, no scandals, and probably has someone special in his heart. He's different from those other bad guys."
Paula teased, "Melinda, you keep mentioning Christopher. Are you sure you haven't fallen for him without realizing it? Christopher is a perfect guy. If you became his girlfriend, no one would dare say anything bad about you. He says he's looking out for you because of your parents, but you should take advantage of that."
I quickly stopped her, "Enough, Paula. Christopher helped me, and I know the difference between gratitude and betrayal. Let's get back to work. You recommended me to Summit Innovations Group. Do you think I'll get an interview?"
I wasn't as calm as I appeared, feeling a bit nervous.
Paula noticed, "I'm just an employee, but I have some influence. Your resume is perfect. You should have no problem with the initial interview. Trust me."
"Alright, if I can't trust anyone, I can trust you," I replied with a smile.
"Let's wait for tomorrow's notice. Since Christopher said the company values ability, you'll definitely get the call. In the meantime, review some translations or projects Summit Innovations Group might be involved in and practice."
Paula, with her years of experience, knew all the little tricks to ace an interview and shared them with me.
"Got it!" I responded obediently.
Paula chatted a bit more before asking, "What if you don't pass the interview? Will you keep applying to other companies?"
I thought about it. If I didn't pass, I might doubt my abilities. But I wouldn't wallow in self-pity. It would just mean I've been out of touch with the industry for almost two years, and my skills have declined. I needed to brush up on my skills and keep trying.
"I don't know. If I don't pass, I might not continue job hunting. The company might be concerned about the live stream incident, and it will take time for people to forget. I could use that time to refresh my knowledge. I might also consider selling some unnecessary properties or shares and go traveling to relax." I felt a bit lost.
Paula cried out, "Damn capitalists! I forgot you're rich and pretty, with properties and shares. Selling those, you wouldn't need to work or deal with anyone's attitude. Poor us, thinking hard work leads to financial freedom. We're just struggling workers..."
Paula pouted. I cleared my throat, "Paula, your family is the richest in Starlight City. You shouldn't say that, or people will laugh. My little money is nothing compared to yours."
Paula laughed. Seeing me joke around, she knew I was over the interview stress.
We hung up, and I had to admit, Paula was my rock, giving me strength.
Just as Christopher said, the next day, I received the interview notice from Summit Innovations Group.
To make a good impression, I got up early, put on light makeup, wore a professional outfit—a white blouse and a black pencil skirt that reached my knees. I smiled at myself in the mirror, gave myself a pep talk, and took a cab to the company.
As for driving, I had a car but was too scared to drive after the accident with Clara during my pregnancy. I had developed a fear of driving, and since I rarely went out, I got used to taking cabs.
Back then, Lawrence hadn't shown his true colors. He usually accompanied me, driving me around, so I didn't have to worry.
Looking back, Lawrence's actions were like grooming me to be what he wanted—weak, easy to manipulate, obedient, and isolated.
Thankfully, I woke up in time. Otherwise, I might have been completely under Lawrence's control.
