“What?” I choke out the word. “What is going on? Why must I follow you? Other than your name, I have no idea who you are and what your intentions are. I don’t understand why.”

It’s odd how this man is gazing at me. Despite his rough around the edges looks, his gaze is soft and almost loving. Like he has known me his entire life and cared for me the day we first met, despite the fact that we have never met before.

And yes, I know, I should grab this chance and get the hell away from Kaiden before he does something that can’t be fixed, but I’m so damn suspicious, I can’t trust anyone.

Anno was the first person I trusted in years and look where it landed me. I can’t afford another mistake like that, I just can’t.

“For now, it doesn’t matter. I can explain later. First, I get you out of here, away from these soul sucking leeches and then, once you’re safe, I explain everything.” He offers and nods his head towards the exit.

All the hesitation and fear aside, it takes me maybe two seconds to make the decision. With my head held high, I take the first step towards imaginary freedom.

Worst case scenario, I can try to escape this man and his friends later, whenever they’re not paying attention to me.

A couple of steps down the aisle and someone grabs my upper arm. I freeze, my head snaps to my right and I meet the concerned gaze of the king himself. “Child, don’t do this. The man you’re following so blindly is ten times worse than anything you experienced in this pack as a slave. You don’t trust me, I know, but believe me when I say you’re walking straight into the arms of death.”

The corner of my lips twitches, but I suppress the smile that I might split my face in half as I lean in to whisper. “If it’s death and your son I have to choose between, I choose death. I choose my last breath away from the monster you created. Now, let go of me before I put up the show of a century about how much you’re hurting me. Whoever the man is, he looks like he’d be very unhappy if anyone here hurt me.”

This sense of control, the surge of power over someone is really addictive. No wonder people get used to the feeling and start abusing it so fast, because the moment those words leave my lips and the king pulls his hand away from me like I burned him is really empowering.

I dust off my dress, as if the king’s touch is dirty and keep walking with the massive man following in my steps.

“Hey! What about my son? Don’t take him with you, I know it’s the girl you want!” I hear the king scream at us from behind.

Constantine barks out a low laugh and keeps walking. “I will set him free at your border. Naked, probably, so be prepared to look at your precious son in his full glory. That’s the least I can do for a scum you’ve raised.”

I can’t hold a laugh and start giggling. Even slapping a hand over my mouth doesn’t silence me much, but I feel a little too happy to be silenced. Not only am I taken out of this awful situation, but also, there’s someone on my side who sees just how awful Kaiden, his father and the pack are.

Once we finally exit the building, I take a deep breath and enjoy the taste of air for a second. I know air the same as water has no taste for everyone, but to me, this tastes like a second chance at freedom.

Constantine places his large hand on my shoulder and squeezes it a little, “come along, my princess, we have quite a walk to do until we reach the bloody border.”

Just as those words leave him, more men, just as massive as Constantine, start surrounding us. All of their eyes are blood red, just like his, but unlike the man who’s saving me, they don’t look like rogues.

Although the same as Constantine, they don’t look like wolves either. I’m certain they’re shifters, but I could bet my head that they aren’t like me or the people in this pack. Something about them is awfully off.

As that realization sinks in, I gulp and nod, ready to follow them in silence while I consider my chances at escape. I’m glad to get away from Kaiden, but this is about another mess I’m getting tossed in and have no idea how to get out of.

More and more men surround us until eventually, as we walk, I don’t see even a speck of nature around us, only massive bodies around me that act like some sort of wall - I can’t see anything and anyone who walked past couldn’t see me either.

They’re acting like a shield of some sort, I suppose.

“Strip,” Constantine barks, startling me so much I jump and look up at him.

“W-what?” I choke out.

Constantine smiles and shakes his head at me. “Not you, princess. I’m talking to the piss poor excuse of a wolf who tried to hurt you. You, however, I suggest you turn around and look away. He doesn’t have anything to be proud of, trust me, you’ll be more disgusted than impressed.”

Kaiden tries to say something, probably stupid shit to defend his honor or whatever, but one of Constantine’s men slaps a hand over his mouth and growls. “You fuckin’ listen to what he says, get it? He’s too kind, I’d slit your throat and eat whatever is left of your fuckin’ pack, so think before you start blabbing.”

Constantine winks at his friend and chuckles. “And I might as well allow him to eat your pack, we’ve been starving for meat lately after the winter our group had.”
