Mated to alpha triplets at all-boys school Chapter 224
Gio pov
The cell is cold and dark, and the days are starting to blend together. I’m losing track of time.
I don’t think about the cold or the pain anymore. My attention is captured by anything that is happening outside the cells - the recent events, chaos and the possible war nearing us.
Kaiden’s chaos. His lies. His madness.
When I hear footsteps coming down the hall, I look at the cell door. I know the sound of those steps far too well, there’s only one self-centered asshole who walks around here with such lightness to his steps.
The only guard who enjoys taunting me any chance he gets. He’s been the worst of them, but today, there’s something different about his demeanor.
“Still clinging to hope, Gio?” He asks, but his voice lacks the usual bite to the tone. He almost sounds human.
“I don’t have a choice,” I mutter, dismissing his presence. “Hope is all I have.”
Surprisingly, this time he doesn’t laugh at my words. There’s no mockery that usually follows any answer I give him. Instead, he sighs, a long, tired sound, and leans closer to the bars. “Kaiden is a fool,” he mutters, glancing over his shoulder to make sure no one else is around. “He’s ruining everything. The pack is falling apart.”
I stare at him, caught off guard. He’s never spoken like this before, especially about the very prince he’s been praising all this time. “You think so? What made you change your mind?”
He nods and presses his lips in a thin line, looking like he’s trying to hide the anger he feels. “It’s not just me. There are others who see it. We’re tired of his reckless behaviour and disrespect of anyone who stands a rank lower than him. He’s leading us to death, and the king is too blind to stop him.”
I never thought I’d hear this from one of Kaiden’s favorite guards. “Why are you telling me this?” I ask, still sceptical about believing in his words. This might as well be a trap, set by Kaiden to ensure his father never believes me, even when the truth about him is exposed.
He looks away. “Because someone needs to know. Someone who might be able to do something about it. I’m not the only one. There’s a growing group in the pack. People who want things to change.”
Just as I part my lips to ask another question, the guard steps away from the cell door, turns his back to me and walks away. I’m left with my own thoughts and more shit to overthink.
Later, when the silence returns, I hear a voice from the next cell. Kyle is enjoying the cell next to mine because he had the balls to do something many others never could. He spoke against Kaiden.
We’ve talked a little, in hushed voices when the guards aren’t around.
“You heard what he said, didn’t you?” I ask, partly to make sure I’m not losing my mind and imagining things.
“Yes. But it doesn’t change anything. We’re still locked up, and he’s still in charge.”
“True. However, this might be a good thing, like a new start for something that might bring a change. If there’s really a group of people inside the pack that wants to see Kaiden’s downfall, we might have a chance, don’t you think? We won’t stay here forever, it’s better to leave with an idea than none at all.”
There’s a long silence and just when I assume Kyle doesn’t want to talk, he huffs and asks, “what are you planning?”
“I don’t have a plan yet, just an idea for now. However, if we want to pull off something as big as exploding Kaiden, we will need more help. We can’t do this alone. Two people aren’t warriors if they are facing an entire army. So, I think we could use the inside rebellion to our advantage.”
“Yeah, I suppose you have a point.” Kyle mutters and the silence stretches out again. Just as unexpectedly as he always speaks up, he gasps, sounding like he just remembered something important. Shit, the bears. Did you know they’re here? The ones who helped Kaiden’s mate to escape. They were caught and brought in while you were dragged away to that ceremony. They’re down the hall, a few cells away.”
My heart skips a beat at his words. This might be the opening I’ve been waiting for - we have someone who can become our allies right here, at the tips of our fingers.
Again, steps approach us, so Kyle and I stop talking. This time, the guard who approaches me isn’t the same, this guy has been on my side since day one. As always, he brings me food that shouldn’t be given to a prisoner, and just like before, I ask him to split the portion in half and share with Kyle.
The guard doesn’t comment on my request, does as I ask and sits down next to my cell while I eat. “Is there anything I can do for you today, Gio? The boys and I were talking and we think we can stage an escape for you-”
Before he can finish, I stop him. “No! That will land you in trouble, that’s unnecessary.”
He huffs. “What’s life without a little trouble?”
“Drop it. As in, if there is anything you can do for me, yes, there is actually. I’d like to have a word with one of those bears you guys are holding here.”
The guard tenses and glances at me with nothing but disbelief. “You can’t be serious.”
“Oh, but I am,” I mutter and grin around a mouthful of food.
After a moment, he shrugs and gets to his feet. “Fuck it, let’s do it.”
I don’t expect to get the chance so soon, so I’m surprised to see him unlock the cell and open the door for me. Then, he takes off the chains and motions towards the cells of the bear prisoners.
Since they aren’t as far as I assumed, they already heard the conversation I had with Kyle and the guards, so one of them speaks before I can introduce myself. “You want us to work together?” He asks.
I nod. “We’re all in this together now. If we don’t stop Kaiden, he’ll destroy the pack, and everyone in it. I don’t know why you’re so adamant to protect the girl, but Kaiden isn’t good for her, so I think this union will benefit you too.”
He’s silent for a moment, then nods. “What’s your plan?”
“First, we get out of the cells. We wait for a perfect moment to leave. Just like you heard, we have inside help. Then, we need to come up with a plan. I think first and foremost, the most important part will be to turn the people against him, and not only a small group. I mean everyone.”
“You think we can do it? Even if we get out, we’re just a handful of prisoners. He has the whole kingdom behind him. You must have forgotten that the little shit is the next king in line.”
“Not the whole kingdom.” I insist. “There are plenty of people who are done with his bullshit and we can convince even more. We just have to be smart about it.”
“Let’s assume that happens, alright? What next? We help you get rid of Kaiden and then what? Who do you think will be the next leader? If you assume we will be okay with the crimes the current king is commiting to this day, you’re dead wrong. We need to protect our niece, that is the only reason why I’m considering standing with you, but I must remind you that we are loners, we don’t give a shit about your pack and kingdom. The people here could rot for all we care.”
“I understand. As for the next leader, I don’t know. However, it can’t be Kaiden or even the current king. This kingdom deserves better, even despite your hatred for us.”
The bear studies me for a long moment until he eventually extends his large hand through the bars and offers me a deal sealing handshake. “Alright, we’re with you.”
