Elias pov

Going through the tunnels Ethan found earlier proves to be easier than we initially assumed. That must be because the whole place is bursting with chatter and insane amounts of people.

Even while we go through the place, we all notice how much more people are there, other than the regular pack members. Something important is happening around here, I noticed a few important faces in passing, so my brothers and I are growing increasingly more worried as we sneak through the massive house.

At first, I assumed we would have to use some of those voodoo magical bullshit tricks to get in here, but those are unnecessary given how freely we roam the place. In fact, I saw a couple of guards and most of them didn’t even pay any attention to us while others just nodded at us in greetings.

“What the fuck is going on?” Everett hisses, eyeing Ethan and I.

All I can do is shrug my shoulders in response. I don’t have the answer he seeks, so asking me is a pointless waste of time.

Ethan, however, ever the chatterbox, is more than happy to toss out some of his assumptions. “They had cupcakes so I think it's a celebration. Maybe a birthday for someone important? Oh, or even funerals. Imagine how fucking awesome it would be to have cupcakes at your funeral. My ghost sure as fuck would be happy running around and watching people munch on that good stuff. I’d add rat poison to some just to ensure I’ll have company in the afterlife and hand those out to people I care about the most.”

Everett chuckles and rolls his eyes. “You’re a weird one, baby brother.”

I remain silent as I listen to their weird banter. Both of them are weird.

“Yeah, and I’d give you a cupcake with poison. I’d give one to Eli too. And Ash, definitely would give one with a double dose to Ash, I want her with me everywhere I go,” Ethan exclaims, sounding too happy while he’s admitting that he’d commit a crime.

Not even any simple, petty crime. My brother is speaking about killing someone.

“Okay, shush you two,” I hiss at them and stop in my tracks right before Everett can offer his thoughts on the matter. We stand for a moment until the coast is clear and I can lean closer to the morons to whisper, “it doesn’t matter what’s going on, okay? We are here to find Ash and get her out of this mess. That’s our main goal. Is that clear?”

My brothers look more serious than ever as they both agree with curt nods.

Seeing that they’re in this with me, I feel a little more at ease. At least I don’t need to burn this whole place to the ground to get what I came for.

“Alright, good,” I mutter and glance around. “First, we need to figure out where exactly we are and then, we need to find out what this celebration is about. We can use it as a cover up for getting her out.”

“I like the way you think,” Ethan whispers and beams at us.

Another set of guards pass by us, just barely missing running into us, apologizes and leaves as quick as they appeared.

My brothers look at ease, without their guards up where they’re supposed to be, so I take it upon myself to set their damn priorities right. They can’t act this oblivious and think nothing will go wrong with the mission on our hands.

Reaching out, I grab them both by the backs of their necks and pull them closer to hiss. “Be careful, stop acting like you two belong here. I get it, it’s a great cover and everything, but something’s terribly off with the guards and how everyone is acting around us, damn it. I think they’re ignoring us on purpose until the right moment to ambush us. There’s no way they don’t know who we are.”

As much as I would like to think that they’re too busy with whatever celebration is happening, I can’t find it in myself to actually convince myself that might be the case.

Our father always preaches that we should hope for the best and expect the worst, just to be prepared if everything really does come crashing down. That’s exactly what I’m planning to do in this situation too.

“You really think so? I mean, it could be that they’re too busy or maybe they mistook us for actual guests. That might be a possibility, right?” Everett suggests, nudging Ethan’s side for his opinion.

“No,” I shake my head. “Your idea might make more sense if we were upstairs where the whole stuff is happening. I mean, it makes little to no sense that so many high profile wolves are wandering the halls here with us, but maybe they have some secret business to attend to. I don’t know, but either way, I don’t trust this pack and I trust their minions even less than the prince of dickheads himself.”

“Geez, no need to have your panties in a knot, Elias. Chill, we got this far, the rest of the mission will be a piece of cake,” Ethan mutters.

Of course, Ethan is one to talk. He’s all that while in reality, my brother is all bark and no bite when it comes to his loved ones. And besides, out of the three of us, he’s the most nervous one, acting the most on edge and showing off just how anxious he is to get Ash back.

I mean, I share the sentiment in a sense, but I swear, he’s acting as if he won’t be able to suck in another breath unless Ash is by his side.

Ignoring Ethan’s attempt to come up with more silly theories, I nudge him to start moving and encourage Everett to do the same. The sooner we get to Ash, the sooner we can get her out of here and bring her back to safety. All I know is that I won’t rest for a fucking second until I have her back in my arms. That little thing has managed to become such a big part of our lives that I don’t think my brothers could live without her presence. And neither could I.
