Kaiden pov

The halls of the palace echo with my footsteps, each one sharp, deliberate, purposeful. Servants and guards scramble to get out of my way, their fear can be felt from miles away. I catch the flicker of terror in their eyes as they press themselves against the walls, heads bowed.

Good. Fucking amazing. Let them fear me. Let them see what I’ve become.

My father’s voice still rings in my ears, that low growl of authority. He thinks can control me. His words are a blur now, tangled in the haze of my anger, but the meaning is clear. Stop this madness. Come back to reason.

Reason? I’ve given everything for this kingdom, for him, for the name that weighs like a noose around my neck. And what do I get in return? Betrayal. Rejection. A mate who doesn’t fucking want me. No. I’m done being reasonable.

I push open the heavy doors to the training grounds, the sharp clang of swords and the bark of orders fill the air as usual, letting me know the training is still happening in full swing. The royal guards are in the middle of a sparring match, their movements precise, deadly, just like they’re supposed to be.

I step onto the field, the cool breeze brushes against my skin, carrying the scent of sweat and metal. Conversations die instantly, and every head turns to me. “Prince Kaiden,” one of the captains says, his voice wary. “We weren’t expecting you.”

“Obviously,” I drawl, stepping further onto the field. “But I’m here now. Let’s see what your warriors are made of.”

The captain hesitates, his brow furrowing in what seems suspiciously like disbelief. “With all due respect, Your Highness, these are seasoned fighters. Perhaps it would be better to observe-”

“Did I ask for your opinion?” I snap, my voice cold and dripping with venom.

The captain stiffens but doesn’t argue. He turns to his men, barking orders to prepare the next round. I shrug off my jacket and toss it carelessly to the ground. The weight of my power hums beneath my skin, a low, thrumming vibration that makes my blood sing. It’s intoxicating, addicting.

Every time I reach for it, I can feel my humanity slipping further away, but I don’t care. It’s worth it, so fucking worth it, I would sell my soul all over again just to feel the sensation just one more time.

The first warrior steps forward, a massive man with muscles like steel and a scar running down the side of his face. He sizes me up, his eyes flickering with doubt.

“You’re hesitating,” I say, rolling my shoulders. “Afraid you might hurt me?”

The man squares his stance, gripping his sword tightly. “No, Your Highness. Just wondering if you’ll survive this.”

I grin, the sharp edge of it making his confidence falter. “We’ll see, won’t we?”

The fight is over before it begins.

He swings his sword, the blade slices through the air with deadly precision, but I don’t even flinch. My magic surges, faster than thought, and I catch his blade with my bare hand. The gasp from the crowd fuels me as I twist, wrenching the weapon from his grasp and slamming the hilt into his chest. He goes down hard, the breath knocked out of him, and I don’t wait for him to recover.

With a flick of my wrist, the power bursts from me, slamming into him like a wave. His body convulses, his screams echo across the field before he collapses into unconsciousness. First one down, but it’s not enough, not even close to enough, I need more.

I glance at the captain, who looks like he’s about to be sick. “Next.”

The second warrior hesitates, his eyes dart to his fallen comrade before he steps forward. He’s quicker, more strategic, but it doesn’t matter. Nothing matters. He comes at me with a flurry of strikes, each one faster than the last, but I don’t give him the satisfaction of landing a single blow. My magic coils around me, sharp and hungry, and I let it loose. The force of it sends him flying across the field, his body slams into the stone wall with a sickening crack. He slumps to the ground, unmoving.

Two down. Fuck, I need more. This is my outlet, my chance to let out the pent up anger and I need it more than I need my next breath. I can feel the stares, the weight of their fear pressing against me like a physical force. The guards, the onlookers, even the captain - they’re all terrified. Good.

Let them see. Let them know what I’m capable of. How far I will go, even if I must destroy the pack from the inside, let them see the monster I’ve become for them.

The third warrior steps forward reluctantly, his hands tremble as he raises his sword. He doesn’t want to fight me. He knows he doesn’t stand a chance.

“Come on,” I taunt, my voice cold and mocking. “Don’t keep me waiting.”

He lunges, but it’s half-hearted, and I dispatch him with a wave of my hand. The magic slams into him, sending him sprawling to the ground, coughing up blood. Three down. The silence that follows is deafening.

I turn to the captain, who looks like he wants to sink into the earth and disappear or is about to puke out his guts. “This is your best?” I ask, my voice dripping with disdain. “Pathetic.”

“Prince Kaiden...” he begins, his voice trembling, but I don’t let him finish.

“You call this a Royal guard?” I sneer, my power crackling around me like a living thing. “No wonder this kingdom is falling apart.”

I step off the field, ignoring the whispers and the way everyone scrambles to get out of my way. The magic is still thrumming in my veins, hot and intoxicating, and I feel invincible. But beneath it, there’s a hollowness, a void that no amount of power can fill, a void I’m ready to embrace and call my own.

They’re afraid of me, all of them. Even my father doesn’t know what to do with me anymore. I’ve heard the whispers, the desperate conversations behind closed doors. He’s losing control. He’s not the same. What do we do?

What they don’t realize is that I’ve already made my choice. I’m not the same, I’m not the prince they wanted me to be, the son my father hoped for, and I don’t care.

Let them fear me. Let them tremble in my presence. Because fear is power... and power is all I have left.
