Gio pov

Initially, I assumed the king’s guards would treat me like an absolute piece of shit. That, however, doesn’t happen.

They do push and shove me around while the king is around, but as soon as the man disappears around the corner, all guards whisper their apologies for the disrespect they’re showing me.

When I’m led down the stairs, into the cells, the guard to my right growls. “I can’t believe he’s choosing the brat over you, Gio. The king has lost the plot. Without you, nothing would happen around here, you’re the one who acts like a glue in this place. Fuck it, I don’t remember the last time our king bothered to make a decision without asking you some advice.”

His words make me feel a little better about this situation. The king doesn’t view me as an important part of his pack, anyone worth listening to now that I’ve attacked his son, but not everyone shares the same sentiment.

“I agree. Without you, this place would have been burned down to ashes ages ago. Honestly, I believe that you’re the reason why this pack still exists, no one else,” the guard to my left agrees.

As much as their kind words feed my ego, I don’t want to get lost in the compliments. Sure, it feels nice to be appreciated and praised, but what’s the point of having the praise if my future home are these cells?

From now on, I’ll become a prisoner, not a high rank wolf who deserves respect.

“Before you start overthinking everything that happened, I hope you will listen to something I have to say,” the guard to my right speaks up again as we keep descending down the stairs. “I think it was high time Kaiden got his ass handed to him. The boy is insufferable, and the king keeps shielding him as if he isn’t old enough to fight his own battles.”

“Yeah,” the guard to my right lets out a choked laugh. “We have been watching him abuse the pack members and his power for too long. When I tell you I’ve been waiting for someone to snap and finally beat that little shit for years, just know I mean it. In my eyes, you’re a hero, Gio, a hero who did something the rest of us could only dream about.”

“Nothing heroic about losing control,” I grumble under my breath, hating how weak the admission sounds.

For a man like me, admitting something and owning up to mistakes comes difficult. I’m used to taking the high road, being the bigger person, so it’s not that often than I make any mistakes at all. This one, however, is a result of years of people pleasing and playing by the rules. Deep down, I know I was bound to snap for one reason or another.

“Not that it’s our business or anything, but both of us were wondering why you snapped. You’re always so calm and collected, no one has as much patience for Kaiden’s crap as you do, so I can’t help but wonder.”

“He did something stupid,” I say, not really too keen on explaining every detail. But I should. Actually, I must. If I want some of the pack members to stand by my side if anything were to happen, I need to be truthful and warn most of them about how idiotic Kaiden can be. “The prince sent hunters after his mate. Kaiden thinks they will find her and bring her to him, so he doesn’t have to lift a finger. What he doesn’t know is that he basically sent a bunch of killers after the poor girl. Also, then there’s the fact that the hunters know the location of our pack too. It’s only a matter of time until they unite their forces and start hunting us down.”

Both guards exchange worried glances. “Shit, man, we have families here. Wives and kids, elderly parents, relatives. It’s too big of a risk,” the guard to my right hisses.

I completely understand his worry for I’ve been worrying about the same fucking thing. The people here are more than capable of defending themselves, but if a whole army of hunters came after us, even the most skilful warriors couldn’t save us all.

“I knew that kid was stupid, but not to this extent. Does the king know? Have you told him yet?”

I can’t hold in the laughter as I look around. “Does it look like he gave me a chance to explain anything? As soon as Kaiden told me about the hunters, I snapped and attacked him. The king, well, you saw his grand entrance – no questions asked.”

“So, what do we do now?” The guard to my left asks when we reach the bottom of the steps.

I expect the guys to show me a dark, rotten cell, but instead, they bring me into one of the guard post rooms. Some guys spend most of their time guarding the cells, so for most part, there’s no use for them to leave the underground levels of the building. They eat, sleep and live here, so therefore, they have their own rooms.

Honestly, a luxury like this wouldn’t exist if I didn’t push for it to happen. The king and Kaiden thought it’s a waste of money to provide any comfort for the cell guards, but I kept insisting we needed the guys to have good rest and healthier schedule to ensure they’ll always remain alert.

One of the guards opens the door for me and shows me around the room. There’s a quite big bed in the middle of the small space, a tiny refrigerator next to it and a TV attached to a wall. The bathroom is small, but the space is way better than a bucket that’d probably serve the purpose if I was locked in the cell.

“We can’t promise you won’t have to sit in one of the cells, Gio. Sorry. For now, we’ll try to have your back since you always had ours, it’s just that we can’t promise that it’ll last. You know how the king is, sometimes he just does what he pleases and goes wherever he wants to go. Sooner or later, he’ll be here to check if we broke you.”
