Ashley pov

I wake up in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by nothing but silence and darkness. I try to recall what happened, but all my memories have turned into one, massive mush of nothingness, which only confuses me even more.

Slowly, I sit up in what feels like bed but might be only a mattress and kick off the heavy weighted blanket off my body. With my hands outstretched, I try to feel around the place as I get off whatever I’ve been sleeping on and move forward, I don’t even know in which direction.

As soon as my hands come in contact with what feels like a wall, I start feeling it and slowly step to the right, hoping it’s the right direction for a door, or at least a window.

I know that eventually, my eyes will get used to the darkness and I’ll be able to see at least shapes around me, but that usually takes a little while, even with my senses being way better than those of a regular human.

Moving to the side, I catch what sounds like someone whispering, discussing something, so I keep stepping closer to the voices. The closer I get, the more clearly I can hear the whispering is actually a very quiet argument between two or more men. I can’t tell their voices apart, only their gender.

“Shit,” I hiss under my breath as my brain finally kicks into gear and reminds me that I was taken by dudes who claimed to be bears.

Okay, a little stop is needed here. It’s good that I was “kidnapped” because I got away from Kaiden and his stupid ceremony before it was too late, but now I’m stuck with these men I don’t know. What if they plan to torture me now?

“If they wanted to hurt you, they would’ve done that long ago, not save you and take you somewhere safe,” Sam whispers, catching me off guard so much, I jump a little.

It’s been a long while since the last time I heard her speak up, so I’m not sure why she chose to make herself known now all of a sudden.

“Because someone has to set the record straight for you,” she mutters.

I want to facepalm myself, to slam my face against the wall maybe, and scream at her at the top of my lungs, but manage to restrain myself from doing anything of the sorts. By giving into the initial wants, I’d alert those men to my presence and facing them now is the last thing I need right now.

“They are no threat,” Sam insists, her voice growing weaker with each word.

“How could I know that, huh? You liked Kaiden and Anno, and look where those two took us. Sam, I love you, you are a very important part of me, but your ability to read people fucking sucks ass.” I answer as calmly as I can.

Sam huffs but doesn’t offer a remark or more of her opinion before she fades away again. One day, I hope I will find out why she’s so weak and tame unlike other Alpha wolves. I don’t know if it’s trauma or her nature, but I swear, she used to be way stronger a long time ago.

While distracted chatting with Sam, I didn’t notice that the whispering has faded and someone opened the door I’ve been looking for until the light hits me and nearly blinds me.

I hiss and slap a hand over my eyes to shield myself from it while someone chuckles at my actions.

“Could’ve called for me, I would be there in an instant,” the man laughs a little more.

“First I wish to remember everything that happened before I drive myself crazy, if that’s fine with you,” I snap back at him and earn a little more of that deep, rich laugh.

“Constantine, my name is Constantine and I’m the mountain bear that carried you here. We barged in during the ceremony of marriage and I might have cut that little shit’s throat a little. Not much, only a little, enough to draw blood and scare the crap out of him. After that, we took you, told you about the connection between us and your family, then you got really angry and started hitting me until you passed out. I think it’s stress that made you sleepy, not exhaustion, your punch is pretty good too.”

Slowly, I turn my body to press my back against the wall. It feels so cold against my skin that I can’t help but shiver and close my eyes.

One by one, the memories come rushing back. Anno’s betrayal, Kaiden’s insistence to force me into becoming his Luna, the unsettling sense of defeat that overwhelmed me and took away the fighting spirit I used to hold dear, all that topped with not recognizing myself anymore and the bear’s arrival just makes me want to vomit my guts out until there’s nothing left behind.

Taking a deep, steadying breath, I pull my hands into tight fists and try to ground myself, even though it proves to be harder than I first assumed it’d be.

“So,” I whisper, ignoring how badly my voice is shaking. “So, what now? What happens next then? Are you guys planning to eat me?”

I know I sound ridiculous, but deep down, I can’t be sure about what the exact plans those men have for me. After all, they’re bears, said it themselves, and bears are known to attack wolves.

And it just so happens that I am, in fact, a wolf. A wolf with a massive defect regarding their inner self, but still a wolf. Just because shifting comes as a great struggle for me doesn’t mean I don’t have the blood of the predator running in my veins.

The only true issue is that in this situation, I can’t help but feel like the predator in me has turned into the very prey I never wanted to become.
