Maybe this makes me a bad person, but I'm really enjoying how miserable my ex-friend looks.

The way his face twists and his eyes keep widening with every realization he finds is so satisfying to see.

For the first time in his life, this man has to come to terms with the fact that he, in fact, doesn't know better after all. He isn't always right and his ability to judge the situation isn't that amazing either.

“Gio, I'm sorry, but I still have to ask. Could you find Kaiden? Could you bring my son home? For the sake of the friendship we once shared. For my sake.” The king pleads, looking like he's ready to drop to his knees and beg me like some God.

It actually sounds funny to me how he asks for something for the sake of our friendship. He never offered me the benefit he is asking for now.

If he would have considered our friendship even for a second back in that office, I wouldn't be stuck in this cell.

“Gio, please, I'm begging you. I promise I'll deal with my son, I promise he will be punished accordingly, I just need him home.”

I roll my eyes and sit up, my back still turned to him. “First of all, I don't believe a single fucking word coming from your mouth. Let's make that crystal clear, yes? Prior to this betrayal, I might have, but not anymore. Now, why would I want to do anything for this so-called friendship if you didn't bother to give me as much as a chance to explain myself?”

A pained whine leaves him. Almost like he's in psychical pain just hearing those words. Like they acted as a dagger, aimed straight at his heart.

“You'll get your freedom. I'll allow you to leave and never bother to seek you out ever again. You have my word,” he tries to bribe me.

I can't help but laugh at the statements he tosses at me. “Yeah, because your word means something to me now.”

There's a brief pause of silence until he lets out a heavy breath and speaks again. “Listen, Gio, you know why I can't leave the territory. Kaiden might be anywhere, but he's not answering the calls from me, or even his best friend. I'm completely convinced that my son has been kidnapped. You're the only person I know is capable of finding him wherever he goes. And again, I need to emphasize that if you agree to do this for me, I will set you free for good. Go and live with your mate. I'll even throw a good sum of money on top of it. Just this once, I need your help. Please, I'm begging you.”

But they do, and this motherfucker is a prime example of how good they can be at begging.

Ignoring most of his words, I focus on the bit that actually means anything to me. Since I've spent years in this pack thinking about others and he never bothered to, I'll take his example and act the same.

“I'm getting out one way or another anyway. Without helping you, by the way. Either dead or alive, eventually I will get out. Probably alive and sooner than you can imagine,” I chuckle as the last word leaves my lips.

What this excuse of a man has forgotten is that we operate under the laws of the alliance. The council of Elders makes the great decisions, not him.

And now, since I'm the king's right hand, the upper rank wolves had to send out messages to the council to warn them about the ongoing situation.

Sooner or later, the Elders will be at his doorstep, demanding answers. And answers they will get. Can't wait to see their faces.

“What do you mean, Gio? Why must you be this damn difficult and act so high and mighty all of a sudden? I'm asking you to find my son and you can go, simple as that.”

For this, I need to see his face, so as slowly as I can, I get to my feet and spin on my heel to face him. The king stands in perfect view, his facial features illuminated by the hall lights whole I'm still partly hidden by the shadows.

The corner of my mouth twitches as I announce the very thing he clearly had forgotten. “The council of Elders will arrive soon after they get the news about my imprisonment. They will call me to stand and demand answers, or as you'd say, explanations and reasons behind the action I took. And that's exactly what they're getting. Every single detail. If I must rot down here and do a little happy dance when I'm promised freedom if only I do this one, last thing, I'm not going down alone. My freedom can't be bought. But it sure as fuck can be earned. And I'll get it when the time comes. Until then, I'm not moving a finger to help you. I've been your slave for far too long. Step out and do your dirty work for yourself, I'm done being your puppet.”

The way his face contorts is downright hilarious. First, he looks shocked when my words about the council sink in. Then, he gets angry as I keep talking and eventually, his face falls like he has given up.

I suppose it's a shit feeling when the only person who has been one constant in your life finally has enough of your shit.

“Gio, I never thought you felt like that. I never assumed you're unhappy.” He tries to come up with silly excuses, as always starting with emphasizing his lack of understanding.

Before he can go any further, I speak over him. “Don't bother to go there. I don't want to hear your excuses. All that matters is that I have rules. Well, one rule. The only way I could ever agree to go and look for the brat is with a clear understanding that I'm bringing him home in a wooden box.”
