Kaiden pov

The upcoming visit from the Council surely puts a damper on my plans. The last thing I need is a bunch of know-it-alls to look after every movement I make.

But, what worries me the most is their connection to that little runaway bitch. Why would they have any interest in her?

I can't afford making a single mistake now. Not when I'm so close to getting everything I've ever wanted. Too bad she is the key I need to gain everything.

Father keeps looking at me like a lost puppy, waiting for any reaction, but I offer none. Now that he has started talking, at least he can tell me everything, no stone left unturned.

“Someone has brought it to their attention,” he starts, looking all sorts of unsure. “That you've abused your mate and the other party is rather unhappy about that. I'm not sure why they are and why they are getting involved, but from what I gather from the quick talk I had with the Elder, he claims it's a very powerful pack and we don't want to make them our enemies.”

I nod and hum under my breath. If that's so, I'd rather first find out who they are, and only after take action.

But first, I need to set the record straight with father, so I put on the mask of worry and anxiety, and reach over the desk to grab his hand. “I can't lose her, dad. I've made many mistakes, that I have understood and accepted, but I can't lose her now that I finally got her back. I can't imagine life without her.”

A weird look crosses his features, but since it's rather gentle, I don't pay too much mind to it.

He places his hand over mine and squeezes it a little, as if he needs to reassure me that he's still on my side.

“I will do anything in my power to ensure she stays at your side, son. No matter what the past is, we need to focus on the future and for you, it's her.”

Somehow, I manage to hold back the laughter. Her, my ass. As if. She's never becoming my future, only the pawn in a game of power.

Not that he needs to know that, right. Ha.

Eagerly, I nod my head in agreement. “Thank you, dad. Thank you for always being on my side and understanding my pain. I couldn't wish for a better man to call my dad.”

He beams at me. See, all it takes is a tiny bit of ass kissing and I reach my goal in no time. Perfect, if anyone's asking me.

“And I couldn't ask for a better son. Now, while I appreciate the chance we get to bond, we need to start talking business first. Do you have any ideas how we could approach the Council? As I said, I'll do anything in my power to ensure she stays here, but if we're against a very powerful enemy like the Elder mentioned, I think we'll need extremely good pursuing skills when they arrive.”

I hum in agreement again. He's right. The Council isn't as easy of a catch as many think. Those men can't be just bought, especially if their own asses are on fire and they're desperate to rid themselves of the imaginary flames.

“I could approach the Council. I could do the same thing I'm doing here - be truthful. I can admit my faults, admit my doings and convince them that I'm a changed man. I can't imagine how I could ever breathe a day without her somewhere near, dad. When the bears took her, I thought I'd lose it for good. When I found her beaten, I wanted to set the world on fire and when that bitch nearly took her from me. Dad, I just.. I can't even think about it.”

For a better effect, I force tears to roll down my cheeks, adding that extra sprinkle of emotion to my words.

He instantly jumps to his feet and walks around the table to pull me into a tight hug. The same moment, I act up even more and start sobbing like a child, holding onto him like my life depends on it.

“I know I've made mistakes, I didn't treat her like I should, didn't think about anything or anyone but myself, I know. But, dad, I swear, when she ran away the first time, I instantly understood where I went wrong. I understood that without her, there is no me. I'm scared, dad. I'm so damn scared to lose her.”

“I know, I know,” he coos, rubbing circles on my back like I'm a fucking child. I hate his touch, hate his weak attempts to support me, but if this is what it takes to get what I want, I can suffer through it. “We'll think of something together. We will convince the Council and make them see the wrong in their ways.”

When he pulls away, he wipes the tears off my cheeks and looks at me the same way my mother used to. Unlike this fuckface, I actually loved my mother, so his concern means nothing to me.

I watch him walk back to his seat and take it, seemingly deep in his thoughts.

For a good while, I remain relatively silent, still hiccuping here and there, keeping up the act of a fearful breakdown.

Time slows as it drags out until I notice a slight smile tug at the corners of his lips. He's not amused by my misery, quite the opposite, this is a look of a man with a bad, bad idea on his mind.

Fuck, I'm down. Whatever it is, it appears to be bad enough to amuse me for a good while.

His eyes focus on me and finally, he stops fighting the smile and flashes me a grin that promises nothing but trouble. Yes, there we go, finally his head is in the right place.

“Kaiden, son,” he starts, arching an eyebrow like a silent challenge. “I know she's unconscious, but how would you feel about marking your mate before the Council arrives?”
