Locking my brother up like some bloody criminal isn’t the nicest thing we could’ve done to him, but truth be told, it seemed like the most sensible one. Everett suggested we pull out the straightjacket and fasten him up “real good” but after I reminded him that we haven’t gotten Ethan a new one ever since he was a teenager and the old one wouldn’t fit, we had no other choice but the cells.

“Think he hasn’t managed to bite his way through the cell bars?” Everett nudges my side and asks, a shit-eating grin across his lips.

I roll my eyes but laugh along. Knowing our baby brother, Ethan wouldn’t see an issue biting the bars until he broke out. “Yeah, because our brother is a rat, right?”

Everett barks out a laugh. “He sure is more rat than he is a wolf.”

Both of us start laughing so hard, we double over and reach out to each other just to keep some balance and don’t faceplant the floor. Our parents stand further away and exchange worried glances.

When our dad speaks up, we laugh even louder. “I warned you, told you that whatever Etahn has might be contagious and now, look at our other boys. They’ve caught the crazy.”

Mom, true to her character, slaps the back of dad’s head and hisses something rude at him. Then, she straightens her posture and pins him with her gaze, letting the silence drag in and make it clear that whatever might follow will be ten times worse. As soon as a smile spreads across her lips, she raises her eyebrow at dad, “I hope you understood everything, darling.” Just to add insult to the injury, she bats her eyelashes as if she's innocent.

Dad groans and tosses his head back, clearly displeased. “I don't understand why I must stay in the doghouse now. I didn't say anything wrong.”

Mom slaps his shoulder. “You aren't a teenager, you can't throw a fit like one. Act like an Alpha, later we can discuss your attitude problem.”

Everett and I keep laughing. As if comparing Ethan to a rat wasn't enough, watching these two bicker is even better. If they don't stop, I doubt I'll be able to stop laughing anytime soon.

Or not. As soon as mom looks our way, both Everett and I go silent. It's literally magical how fast she can shut us up with one look in our direction.

That makes mom smile, so she turns to dad while pointing a finger in our direction and grins, “see, darling, shutting your trap isn't as hard as you claim it is. At least our boys have learned their lesson and know how to act accordingly.”

Dad mouths “traitors” our way, which does nothing but earns him more trouble from mom. She reaches up, grabs his ear and pulls on it like he's a kid. “Are you going to listen to me or not?” She hisses.

Dad looks miserable, but he gives in and grumbles a response that earns him another burst of laughter from Everett and I.

“Yes, I shall listen to you and follow your lead wherever you want me to go, my personal Goddess, my Luna, my queen, my forever and always, the ruler of my dreams and the only woman who can kick me in the balls and I will thank you for it.”

The words leave him so smoothly that it's clear this little speech has been rehearsed many times before. Just imagining dad, standing in front of the mirror and repeating the same words over and over makes me laugh harder.

But no matter how much we laugh this time, dad doesn't dare to even look our way. Clearly, he has learned his lesson this time.

Eventually, Everett and I manage to calm down completely and when we finally wipe the tears off our cheeks, both mom and dad are looking at us. Dad's not happy while mom looks like she's having the time of her life.

Well, until someone knocks on the door and dads Beta enters. “Alpha, Luna, the Elders have arrived. They are expecting you in the grand hall.”

Dad's whole aura changes at the words - if earlier he was angry in a playful manner, all that has faded and now, he looks downright murderous.

Mom, on the other hand, couldn't care less. She's looking at her fingernails and complaining about the polish chipping off after shifting one too many times for their midnight couple runs.

As dad takes the first step, mom catches his upper arm to stop him. With her attention still focused on the nail polish situation, she barely grumbles under her breath. “Let the old bastards wait for a little longer. Darling, you've forgotten we aren't a part of their alliance for a reason, so we don't operate by their rules. Our target pack, however, does, so the longer those bastards sweat, thinking what we might have on them, the better. Use their emotions against them, not allow them to use yours against you.”

A good moment passes until mom's words fully sink in and dad only nods in agreement.

Standing aside, watching them interact, I finally understand why dad's been stressing that mom is the brains of their operation. Dad is very temperamental and mom is a complete opposite. Sometimes, I seriously think those two are a match made in hell.

“Children,” mom starts and we both instantly straighten out, knowing all too well how she expects us to act. But as always, she smiles and adds the little detail, just to make it a little more obvious. “Feral. Absolutely feral. Foam from the mouth like a rabies animal feral. Your brother, losing a candy crush level feral.”

We both grin and nod our heads, instantly turning our backs to our parents and leaving the room, following in Beta's footsteps as he leads us closer to the grand hall.

“I know your mother gave you an order, but please, don't go Ethan feral, boys. Let the old fools keep their fingers. And besides, we don't know where those fingers have been before,” Beta grumbles as he stops in front of the door and then looks down to whisper, “not that Ethan cares where those fingers have been in the first place.”

I glance at Everett, who's already slushing the saliva in her mouth, clearly intent to play his role, so I follow along. Beta finally pulls himself together and glances over his shoulder, flashing us a wide grin. “Good times, boys, good times.”
