Like I could ever sit back and wait until my brothers come up with a solid plan. Yeah, right. I’m an investigator, a fucking Detective if I want to be, and I will act like one now too.

I don’t need a plan to run off and snoop around. I bet my big toe that I will find more information than both of my brothers combined even before they decide which one of them takes which direction. Yes, that’s exactly how good I am at this shit.

First thing, I find a somewhat hidden hallway. I say it’s hidden because the area looks extremely dusty and there are so many spiderwebs, I’m sure Everett would screech like a little girl if he would see this place. My brother isn’t on speaking terms with any kind of spiders at all.

I try to stay as small as possible as I sneak in and tip-toe forward, seeking any ray of light in my way. A Detective, I say, I’m a flipping Detective here.

As I keep going ahead, I catch a couple of phrases my brothers are exchanging via mind-link.

“The upstairs bedrooms are clear. I noticed a few that seem to be occupied by women, but I don’t catch her scent around here. I asked around, pretended to be a lost guest and one of the maids told me there are two more stories with bedrooms above this one, so I’ll try to sneak in there.” Elias’ voice echoes in my mind.

Soon after, Everett offers his perspective too. “I’m mingling with the women in the kitchen right now. They’re trying to find clothes in my size because apparently, I look like a waiter now so that’s my cover. They’re not talking about what this celebration is yet, but I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough.”

I chuckle as I imagine my larger than life brothers, acting coy and stupid. If only I could see Elias, all flushed and confused as he pretends to be lost, I’d fucking pay for that show. And Everett? That fat motherfucker, running around and handing out drinks? Priceless.

Since I’m notoriously known as someone who can’t actually do two things at the same time, or multifunction as some posh fuckers would say, I get so lost in my thoughts that all I can focus on is walking. And walking I do, right into the back of one of the guards.

“Hey, watch where you’re going!” He growls before he spins on his heel to face me. Once he realizes I’m not one of the guards or workers, he frowns. “My apologies, sir, it’s very unkind of me to react in such a manner, but may I ask what are you doing here? This area isn’t for commoners and guests.”

Well, since I have oh so many ideas to choose from, of course, I choose the worst. I look up into the guy’s eyes and let a drool drip down from my mouth as I mumble a very sloppy, “mommy?”

His eyes widen twice the size while some other guards near him start laughing so hard, some even shed tears while others look like they’re about to piss their pants. Look at me, a Detective and a comedian in one person, I’m fucking brilliant.

“Mommy?” I repeat a little louder and start blowing saliva bubbles while crossing my eyes. Worst case scenario, they let me roam this place. Best case scenario, they’ll take me wherever the action is happening and try to find my “parents” to ensure I don’t fuck up anything.

“Goddess, it always has to be the hot ones who are the weirdos and sickos,” the guard growls and pinches the bridge of his nose. I wish I could thank him for the compliment because hell, I am hot as fire, but that’d blow my cover so I keep my mouth shut.

“Alright, buddy,” the guard mumbles as he drops his hand and places the other on my shoulder. “How about we head upstairs and find your parents, huh? Sounds good, doesn’t it, my little friend?”

“Mommy?” I repeat the same word to come across as someone completely lost to the world.

If I manage to convince all of these men that I’m not okay, they’ll probably try their best to get me off their hands as fast as humanly possible, which also will totally work in my favor.

“Yes, of course, we will find your mother. Let’s go, follow me little guy,” the guard smiles at me and gestures toward one of the doors I didn’t notice earlier.

Just to add an extra sparkle to the whole mess, I grab his hand and grin, drool still dripping down the corner of my mouth. The rest of the guards are having the time of their lives, laughing and tossing stupid remarks at the guard whose hand I’m holding.

The worst ones are something about them knowing he’s gay, but never thinking he’d prey on easy targets, especially someone like me who’s clearly not okay in his head.

Just in case, I scan their faces and try my hardest to etch the images in my memory. Once the time comes, I’m going to kill all of those fuckers, one by one. After all, not long ago, I thought I was at least bisexual if not totally gay when I realized I have feelings for Ash.

Nobody’s going to make fun of gay people in front of me. Ever. I’ll stand as an ally and fight to death if that helps me ensure their rights are protected from the wrong crowds. Gay or not, the guy is nice and very helpful, which means he’s the only one with some sense of humanity within him.

But for now, I can’t blow the cover I’ve created, so I have to bite my tongue and go with the goddamn flow. As we slowly move upstairs, because apparently I’m still somewhat underground, the guard starts talking about some weird wedding ceremony.

At first, I’m a little confused, but the more he blabs, the easier it is for me to realize what he is going on about. That shitstain brought Ash here to force her into marriage.

Without missing a beat, I mind-link my brothers to warn them about what is happening and force down my anger until the guard finally walks me upstairs. Here I come, fuckers, the shit’s about to go down.
