Kaiden pov

Ezra’s words still echo in my mind, hours after the conversation happened, and I can’t seem to erase them from my mind. I can’t stop thinking about his last words. What kind of mistakes was he talking about?

I don’t believe it could be anything related to the ritual and my newfound power. My father has never mentioned anything like that, so I highly doubt he ever dabbed his fingers into anything forbidden.

After I left the library, with no information to use to my advantage, I spent hours aimlessly wandering the house, looking for anything that could take my mind off the stupid questions. To make matters worse, Ezra disappeared again, so it’s not like I can question the smug asshole either.

As I round the corner of one of the halls, I almost run into one of the maids. For some reason, anger flares up in me and I growl at her. “Watch where the fuck you’re going!”

She pales and jumps back, slapping a hand over her chest. “My apologies, prince Kaiden. I didn’t mean to run into you. It’s my fault, I wasn’t paying attention to where I’m going.”

She’s saying all the right things, but something in her tone irks me. I don’t register what I do until it’s too late and I have the woman pinned against the wall, my hand around her throat, squeezing so tight, I cut off her air supply. “Next time there will be no fucking next time. Got it?” I spit the words through gritted teeth.

“Y-yes,” she manages to force the word and almost nods her head too.

I drop her and step back. The corner of my mouth twitches in a twisted satisfaction, seeing the woman like this - panting for breath, dropped on the floor like the dirt she is.

“The king is looking for you everywhere, my prince,” she whispers, eyes cast down, horror oozing from her. She’s so scared, I could bet her stench is so prominent that the rogues wandering the unclaimed lands can probably pick up on it.

“Where is he?” I ask and catch myself off guard with how emotionless and void my voice sounds.

“The courtyard, my prince. The king and some of his men are gathering there,” she answers, bows her head and excuses herself before she scrambles up to her feet and hurries away.

My mood brightens a fraction as I wander the halls and finally, leave the building. The courtyard is full by the time I get there. My father stands aside with some of his closest men, talking to the higher-ranking members of the pack, but as soon as they notice my arrival, the chatter stops.

I can feel their gazes on me, probably judging my late arrival, but I don’t care even the slightest. In fact, I enjoy the silence that falls over them.

For some reason, it feels like they’re waiting to see what I’ll do next.

I scan my surroundings and notice something out of place. In the middle of the gathered pack members are three lower-ranking members, forced to their knees.

Their hands are tied behind their backs, and they look scared beyond belief.

I take a moment to really look at them and soon realize that these men are the same pack members who dared to speak against me after the ceremony flopped. They might think they’re brave, but in reality, they have no idea what true bravery looks like.

I glance at my father and as soon as our gazes meet, he nods. “The choice is yours, son,” he says loud enough for everyone around us to hear.

Well, this day surely just got loads better. “Bring them forward,” I command the guards, who obey without questions. Two men step forward and drag them towards me.

I know the one in the middle personally. Kevin. He’s always the first one to speak ill of me, all you have to do is present him the chance and he’ll take it in a blink of an eye.

Kevin glares at me as he’s forced to remain on his knees. “What is this, Kaiden?” He snarls, sounding both terrified and outraged at the same time. “Are you trying to show us you’re still in charge? If so, don’t bother, we know you’ll never get the throne with that major mess you created with your mate.”

“No,” I chuckle and step closer. “I don’t have to prove anything, especially to a nobody like you. Now, we’re playing the game of loyalty. The whole purpose of this game is to show what happens when you forget the core values of this pack and challenge your future king.”

“Loyalty?” He scoffs. “Is that what you call it? You’re just a spoiled kid, pretending to be powerful. The pack sees it. Your father sees it. And that mate of yours-”

The mention of her breaks something inside me, a stupid part I’ve been trying to hold together ever since that damned ceremony. My anger spreads through my veins like fire, and I can feel the new power surge next to it. Unlike the burning fire, the power is different, it’s a cold, eclectic feeling that makes the hairs on my neck stand up.

“Enough,” I force the word as a whisper. Then, I raise my hand and embrace the feeling of the dark magic swirling around my fingers, begging to be used as a weapon against the unworthy. “You want to see power, hmm? Sure, let me show you what it means to have the nerve to cross me.”

His eyes widen in horror, clearly he notices something around us has changed, but before he can react and attempt to run, I let the magic loose, focusing on the thoughts about destruction and getting rid of those who stand in my way.

From there, it feels like chaos. The magic acts like a flood, held back for so long and now, breaking free to destroy everything in its way. The energy rushes out of me in waves and hits him with such force that it knocks the air from his lungs and he doubles over in pain.

He gasps for breath, his body twitches in pain as the magic wraps around him like a rope.

“What are you-” he tries to choke out, but as the dark mist of magic wraps around his neck, there are no more words he can say.

Even as I watch him struggle, I don’t stop. I stand there, watch as he fights for his life while his face keeps changing colors with pain and fear. That’s right, these are his last moments, those two things are the only things I allow him to feel and my face will be the last thing he sees in his life.

The feeling is fucking incredible. The magic makes me feel not only stronger, but actually alive. The emptiness inside me is filled with something greater than myself and I don’t want this feeling to stop.

“Now, do you see the power you claim I don’t have?” I whisper, but somehow, everyone around us is so silent that my words reach every person around us. “This is what happens to those who defy me. Challenge the future king and enjoy the consequences.”

“Kaiden!” My father’s voice suddenly breaks the silent spell around us. He sounds equally as pissed as shocked. I turn my face to glance at him and raise an eyebrow. The old fool is as white as a paper sheet, his eyes wide in disbelief, hands shaking. “What are you doing?”

“Teaching a lesson,” I retort before I lower my hand and the fucker collapses on the ground, gasping for air like a greedy bitch. I glance down at him and kick him in the ribs simply because I can. “A lesson none of them ever forgets.”

“No. You’ve gone too far,” father argues. “This is not how we lead the kingdom, Kaiden. You are scaring your people, damn it! Our people are our allies, not enemies.”

“Good. Maybe it’s about time they experience what true fear is. Do you believe I would ever ally with a mockery like him? Your people to me are what an ant is to a human - below nothing.”
