Kaiden pov

“Why the fuck is this taking so long?” I scream at Gio and throw a glass against the wall, right next to his face.

The old geezer doesn’t even flinch, just looks at me like I’m some piece of shit. Or even worse, like I’m a goddamn child who’s about to learn a life lesson or two. I fucking hate this.

“No clue, I’m not allowed to leave your side so it’s not like I can go and check with the guys for myself,” Gio answers in the most nonchalant tone.

Of course he doesn’t give a shit about my problems. He doesn’t care who’s ruling - my father or I, it really doesn’t change a thing in his life.

“And why’s that? Take a day off and run around to check with them!”

Gio shakes his head. “Because I take orders from the king, Kaiden, that’s why. And the king doesn’t trust you, so he literally glued me to your hip so I can ensure you don’t start shit around here.”

“Excuse you,” I growl and cross my arms in front of my chest. “I’m a grown man, I am more than capable of taking care of myself, thank you very much.”

Gio raises a skeptical eyebrow at me and clears his throat, “must I remind you about the recent run-in you had with Sorrentino’s triplets? I’m not one to judge, that’s not my job, but the king wasn’t happy to receive a call from the headmaster at all. Kaiden,” he sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “The situation with Sorrentino’s is extremely difficult, you know that. No matter the power and influence the king has right now, they’re still very dangerous to become enemies with. We’re on thin ice with them.”

“I get it, god damn it!” I hiss, stalking closer to the smug fucker. “Am I not allowed to feel frustrated about the fact that the whole operation of finding my missing mate is led by incompetent fools?”

Gio huffs, “and whose fault is it that the mate is missing now?”

I can be reasonable sometimes so I understand that he’s right. It’s my fucking fault, I get it, but it’s not like I really want her back either. I’m pissed off because I’m literally being forced into this shit by my father.

“Fuck it. Did they find anything in the neighborhood packs?” I force the subject into a different direction to avoid a possible fight with Gio. As much as I want to smash his head in, it’s the worst thing I could do in my situation.

“Nope,” he drags, as if he’s finding some sick pleasure in that one word. “There’s no trace of her. Like the girl vanished into the air and is refusing to show her face anywhere.”

Instead of letting my temper take over, I sit on the couch and close my eyes, a stupid attempt to calm down.

Recalling her scent on the earrings I caught during the party, I start wondering if I’ve managed to catch a whiff of the scent again, yet nothing comes to mind. She disappeared just as quickly as she appeared. How is that even fucking possible?

“I think she’s here, hiding right under our noses,” I finally voice my suspicions out loud.

I’ve been having an inkling that she’s near for a while, if I’m being honest. From the very first day I visited this place, I had a feeling that she’s literally around somewhere, and now, I find it hard to even think about dropping this idea, let alone actually doing it.

“Are you sure?” Gio asks as he sits next to me, his eyes focusing on something in the distance.

“Not entirely, but I have a feeling she’s near. You said it yourself, I should trust my gut feeling and that’s what my gut is feeling right now. She’s somewhere close.”

Gio offers me one, stiff nod and remains silent, as if deep in thought.

It takes a while until he speaks up again, but when he does, the words that spill out of him are the last things I want to be reminded of.

“You know, with all the shit that’s been happening, there’s more things we should worry about these days. Sorrentino’s are taking over a lot of territories these days. If we don’t figure out how to get those fuckers in an iron grip, there’s so saying for how long we’ll remain as those who hold the biggest territories.”

“Wait, what?” I shout as I jump to my feet, complete disbelief washing over me. How is this possible?

Just a few weeks ago, Sorrentino’s pack was nothing but one of those middle-level packs no one gave a shit ago and now, all of a sudden, they’re expanding their territories?

“Yeah, there’s more bad news if you’re ready to stop overreacting,” Gio adds.

It’s beyond me how I manage to control my breathing and sit down again. It’s beyond me how I fucking manage to keep my mouth closed and not go off at Gio for bringing this shit up only now.

“Go on, talk,” I growl.

“The king is growing worried. You’re supposed to take over, but for that, you need your mate and there’s no progress in that life front for now. What makes him even more worried is that the king sent some of his warriors to Sorrentino’s new territory to take over, but only the third of the army returned. We were defeated, Kaiden. Defeated.”

“Wow, you’re just tossing me more reasons to hate the Sorrentino’s, are you?” I grumble and lean against the backrest of the damn sofa, struggling to remain calm.

“I’m not doing this on purpose, Kaiden. Just figured it might be better if you find out before everyone around here starts talking. It’s easier to deal with blows like these before the news reaches the wider public.”

He has a point..

Now, all of my focus is owned by the damn Sorrentino’s. Even morons like them have weak spots, so all I have to do is find one and strike before they see me coming.

Come to think of it, those three assholes are extremely protective of their little cripple. I could use that against them, couldn’t I?

A smug smile spreads across my lips and I don’t bother to hide it as I look at Gio. He doesn’t question me, probably knowing I have an idea and there’s nothing he could say to stop me now.

I will destroy their pack, but first, I’ll start by destroying the one they care about the most.
