Constantine pov

All of us, as a group, as a family unit, understand that what we're about to do isn't as simple as it might seem for any outsiders.

The reality of the matter is that we're heading to Ash’s late parents old pack. The same pack whose territory was overtaken and claimed by the king.

So, by traveling there, we are literally walking into the very arms of our biggest enemy.

I still struggle to believe she could be heading there, but if I think of any other place she could go to, I can't think of even one.

There is no place that poor girl can run to.

I've done some research, I know she joined the Academy, but there's no way she's going back there. That prick of a prince found her there, so that's probably one of the first places he will go to look for her.

Then, there might be a territory or house of her friends, but from what I could find in a short period of time, aside from her three mates, she doesn't really have any friends.

I highly doubt she will seek out the triplets too. Ash is so scared of them finding out the truth about who she is to them that I doubt she would willingly walk into a situation that might possibly force her into revealing that secret.

“Constantine, wait up!” Max shouts from behind me, and only now I realize I'm angrily stomping in front of them, not bothering to ensure my brothers can catch up with me.

I freeze in my step and wait, fighting the insane urge to keep pushing, to keep walking, running even, until I find her and bring her to safety.

What I can't understand is why she left. I know she left on her own since there were no signs of a break in at the cabin, some of our stuff and food was gone, and the door was left unlocked. Putting all of those things together, even a fool could tell she left willingly.

Max finally catches up with me, so I start walking again. “Can I join you?” He asks, clearly intending to keep me in line so I don't rush too ahead of others.

“If you want to,” I grumble and try to sniff the air for Ash’s scent. If I manage to catch on to it, I could find her far sooner than expected.

Surely, since there's no trace in her scent anywhere near the path we're taking, I instantly start sulking. Seriously, why the fuck would she leave us? Leave the safety and comfort of people who view her as their closest family member?

“C, we're going to find her. You know that, right? We will. There's no other option. Keep that in mind and try to remain positive. Trust me, I'm sure Ash wouldn't be happy to know this is how you react to her absence. She'd overthink your reaction and fear any chance to stand on her own feet and become independent in future.” Max tries to reason with me, and damn it, do I hate it that he is right again.

“You're right,” I admit, although unwillingly. “Ash won't be able to do things independently if she will always keep my feelings in consideration and fear my reactions. But, there's a massive “but” when it comes to this situation.”

“Oh, yeah?” Max rolls his eyes. “And what might that “but” be? Go on, enlighten me.” He even shows quotation marks with his fingers as he questions me.

Sometimes, I wish I could punch some of the guys in the nose just to get my point across.

However, I've been learning that violence is not an answer to all of my problems, so I'm taking every issue I face the civilized way. Or, the boring way by taking it out and discussing things.

Sighing, I glance over my shoulder to ensure the other guys are far enough not to hear every word from this conversation. Most of them see me as a leader and I don't want to show more weakness than I already have shown today.

“This is different because she didn't leave to find her independence. Ash understands that she needs protection now more than ever. Not only is the prince on her heels, but the hunters are also looking for her. Should I mention the Dominic issue on top of everything, hmm? Tell me, how stupid you think she is to run away without a good reason, knowing all of those things?”

Max hesitates for a moment, only to process my words, I suppose, until eventually, he agrees with me. “Yeah, you do have a point. But seriously, if she really kept in mind all the danger she's facing out there, I believe she needs a good reason to run. What might that be?”

“Fuck, if I know,” I snort out a laugh, hating this predicament more than anything.

Unfortunately, I can't get inside her mind and read her thoughts, being near or from afar. If I could, I would've done that ages ago.

Max and I toss ideas at each other, trying to figure out what forced her out of the cabin until we near the king's territory.

Both of us stand at the border first, the rest of the group is falling behind, so we stand and wait for them, discussing more ideas - some downright crazy and others hard to believe.

When the guys finally catch up with us, they all instantly sit on the grass around us, pulling their backpacks off their backs and digging in for some snacks.

“We're going to eat something quickly and then, we can sneak into the territory. This area seems more deserted than the border line closer to the king's house, so I don't think the border patrol will find us here,” Greg mutters before he manages to shove an entire muffin into his mouth.

Just to stay cautious, I keep scanning our surroundings to ensure nobody's going to catch us here while the guys eat and drink something.

“We get into the territory in five. Once we step over the border, we won't have much time to check it out so I want everyone to go in groups of two for safety purposes and make sure you're back in this same spot after thirty minutes.”
