Elder Maddox pov

The library in the king’s territory is hidden in shadows, the dim light of the chandeliers barely reaches the far corners of the room, let alone the faces of those surrounding me. That’s good, I know the same as me, they don’t want to be seen. Not by anyone, even not by the Council themselves.

The air is heavy with the scent of old books, dust, and our own tension. I sit at the head of the long table, my fingers spread on the surface as I watch the others shuffle in. The Elders are a solemn bunch tonight, their expressions etched with worry, mirroring the expression on my own face. It’s rare for us to meet in such secrecy, away from the king’s gaze, but the size of our problems demands discretion, now more than ever.

Alpha Sorrentino’s sons are one thing - a headache we can’t afford to ignore. But the prince? Prince Kaiden’s behavior is a whole other beast.

The last of the Elders take their seats and the room falls into a tense silence as I clear my throat. “We have a lot to discuss,” I begin, my voice cuts through the stillness and catches their full attention. “And little time to waste.” I add.

Elder Horace, seated to my right, leans forward, his hands clasped tightly on the table. “This situation with Alpha Sorrentino’s pack is spiraling out of control. Those triplets are relentless in their search for that girl.”

“Ashley Kingston,” Elder Marlowe interjects, his tone a little vary. “That’s the name we’ve managed to uncover. But beyond that? Nothing. It’s like the girl is a ghost. She’s as real as one gets, but there is nothing on her, almost like her record was erased from existence.”

I nod slowly, my mind turning over the little information we’ve gathered. “A ghost who’s managed to entangle herself with not only the Sorrentino triplets but also Prince Kaiden.”

At the mention of the prince, the room shifts, the tension thickens around us, we all fear the same thing.

“Kaiden’s behavior has grown more erratic by the day,” Horace says, his voice low, almost a whisper. “His temper is a danger to the kingdom. And his obsession with Ashley is fueling it.”

I let out a heavy sigh, leaning back in my chair. “We need to consider the possibility that Ashley is more than she appears to be. A girl doesn’t become the center of so much chaos without reason.”

“But what reason?” Marlowe demands, his voice rising slightly. “Our background checks came up empty. No hidden alliances, no special powers. Just a name and a tragic past. Her pack was taken by the king years ago - there’s nothing extraordinary about her.”

“Except for the trouble she brings,” Horace mutters.

A murmur of agreement ripples through the room, but I hold up a hand, silencing them. “Trouble or not, we can’t ignore her significance,” I say firmly, looking at the faces of my allies to remind them I’m not joking around. “The Sorrentino brothers are tearing apart their father’s pack in their search for her. And Kaiden...” I trail off. The prince’s name feels like a real, physical weight, hanging above our heads.

“Kaiden is a danger to us all,” Elder Elara says softly, her voice barely more than a whisper.

The room goes quiet again, the truth of her words settling heavily over us. “We’ve tried to reason with him,” Horace says, his tone too defensive for my liking. “We’ve tried to guide him, to calm him, but he won’t listen. The more we push, the more he resists.”

“He’s consumed by his bond to her. It’s not fully broken yet,” Marlowe adds bitterly. “Even though I think she is tied to the Sorrentino triplets. There is no other way to explain why the triplets are so crazy about getting to her. But the bond between Kaiden and the girl is weak, but still present.”

“That’s another mystery,” I say, my brow furrowing. “Why is the bond with Kaiden still intact? She should have severed it by now.”

“Maybe she can’t,” Elara suggests.

“Or maybe she won’t,” Horace counters.

The room falls into silence again. “What’s so special about her?” Marlowe suddenly asks, his frustration boiling over. “What could possibly make her worth all this? Worth the prince losing his mind and the Sorrentino pack losing their unity?”

I don’t have an answer. None of us do. “All we know is her name,” I say, my voice quiet but steady. “We can’t get more information unless we find whoever is responsible for getting rid of her personal file. And until then, all we can do is take wild guesses about how she fits as a key in this mess. Everything started with her, and sadly, I have a bad feeling that to end it all, we need to end her.”

Elara nods, her eyes distant as she speaks. “If we can find out what makes her special, perhaps we can find a way to end this chaos, to restore balance without killing the girl.”

“Easier said than done,” Horace mutters. “We’ve scoured every record we could find, but her trail goes cold from the moment her pack fell.”

“Perhaps the king knows more,” Marlowe suggests, though his tone is unusually hesitant.

I shake my head. “If the king knows, he hasn’t shared it with us. And pressing him for answers could be unwise given the current situation with his son.” The room falls into another uneasy silence until I have enough of sitting around. “We need to act,” I say finally, my voice firm. “If we allow this chaos to continue unchecked, it will tear apart the kingdom. Kaiden’s instability is a threat not only to himself but to us all. And the Sorrentino triplets’ obsession could spark a war within their own pack.”

“What do you suggest?” Elara asks, her eyes steady on mine.

“We dig deeper. We find out who Ashley Kingston really is. What happened to her pack. Why is she the center of all this chaos. And we find a way to bring this to an end before it destroys us all.”

The other Elders nod slowly, their faces grim. The meeting ends shortly after, but as the others file out of the library, I remain seated, my thoughts spinning.

Ashley. Her name lingers in my mind, a puzzle I can’t solve, a riddle without an answer. Who is she? And why does it feel like the entire kingdom is hanging on the edge of ruin because of her?

As the door closes behind the last Elder, I lean back in my chair and stare up at the ceiling. Whatever secrets Ashley holds, we will uncover them. We have no other choice.
