Mated to alpha triplets at all-boys school Chapter 228
Kaiden pov
The next morning, I wake up earlier than the servants and maids, hours before my father will wake up to sneak out of my room unnoticed. It’s always easier when no one is watching.
I’m not supposed to be here, definitely not without my father’s permission. His office is one thing, but the locked library is one of those rooms no one but the king has any business to enter. Until now.
I’m no longer the son trying to live up to his father’s expectations. No. Now, I have power. Real power. And I need to prove it to every single person who ever doubted me.
Standing at the large oak desk, I stare down at the maps and documents tossed across its surface, but my mind is still stuck somewhere far away. Even now, seemingly at peace with everything, I can still feel the leftover of the witch’s magic thrumming in my veins.
It’s like a second heartbeat now, far more sharper and alive than anything I’ve ever felt before.
But it’s not just the magic. Every room I enter seems colder, like the warmth has been drained out of it. Every object I look at seems clearer, I notice details easier.
I go over the reports again, even though they mean little to me. Most papers describe the whispers of complaints from lower-ranking pack members. The so-called “tension” in the air. As if it matters. I still don’t get why that old fool keeps all this garbage here.
The door opens behind me, and I don’t need to turn around to know who it is. The only two people who can enter the library are my father or his Royal Delta, Nicholas. Now, I’m joined by his Delta, who I’m sure is surprised to see me standing here.
Like always, he walks in like he owns the place. His eyes widen the moment he notices me and freezes. “Prince Kaiden?” He stutters, sounding both confused and awfully irritated at the same time. “What are you doing here?” Nicholas adds.
I flash him a grin, one that’s more savage than I intend. But it does the trick. I watch as his face pales and the color drains from his skin in an instant. “Nothing much,” I say with a shrug, making my voice casual. “I needed to look over the territory reports. I heard there were some complaints from some of the lower-rank members of the pack. Thought it’s about time I learn more and handle the issues myself.”
Nicholas hesitates, shifting his weight from one leg to another. “Your father doesn’t like it when you get involved with disciplinary matters,” Nicholas says, clearing his throat. His eyes dart away from me, back to the maps. “Especially after what happened at the ceremony.”
At the ceremony. That fucking memory makes me grit my teeth. Everything that happened isn’t my fault, but I know that everyone’s whispering behind my back, talking about my failure - my weakness.
I force a smile, but it doesn’t feel like mine. “My father has enough to worry about. I’m just trying to take some of the burden off his shoulders.”
His eyes scan me, and I know he doesn’t buy my excuse. “Very well,” he mutters, still eyeing me like I’m some kind of threat. “But act carefully, Kaiden. The pack is tense after recent events. Your father wants things to calm down, not become even worse.”
“Calm down?” I repeat, faking amusement and winking at him. “Of course.”
There’s nothing more I could say and no need to even try, really, so I watch him in silence.
Honestly, this whole place is packed with top tier morons. They don’t understand that calm, easy and relaxing isn’t what I want. Calm has never brought anyone power. But control, that’s another thing.
For a long while, Nicholas just stands by the door, squirming under my gaze but still refusing to budge until he breaks the character and gives up. I watch him turn his back on me and leave the library without as much as a simple ‘bye’.
As soon as the door closes behind him, I drop the smile and enjoy the frown that pulls at my face, at this point, already feeling like something I’m more comfortable with.
Scanning the maps and scattered documents again, I hurry up to look through them. No doubt, that idiot will go to my father and snitch on me, but before he does, I need to find clues about the secrets I know my father is hiding.
Nothing catches my attention, frustration builds within me, so to avoid a tantrum I might possibly throw, I close my eyes and take calming breaths. This is the only moment when I deem calm as a necessarily.
After a while, I manage to get back to the right headspace. I’m about to dive back into the papers when a movement catches my eye.
Looks like today, the library is crowded with every single person who can’t enter it. Ezra, the pack healer, is some sick shadow freak, always somewhere close, yet still hard to notice.
He leans against the door, arms crossed. “Kaiden,” he nearly barks out my name.
Ezra has never been one to show fear, and he doesn’t now, either. However, one glance at him is enough to know he noticed the change about me. He knows I’m more dangerous.
“Why are you here, Ezra? Have you gotten permission to enter the library?”
“I was looking for you,” Ezra announces and chuckles. “Knew there’s something wrong with the place now and seems I found the reason.”
I raise an eyebrow. His words are a bit too bold for my liking. “Spit it out, whatever you want to tell me.”
Ezra looks me straight into eyes, almost like he’s throwing a challenge and smirks. “A dangerous game is what you play.”
Stupid fucking healers with their stupid fucking riddle speech. Hate it.
Dropping my plans and focusing on the moron, I turn to face him. “What do you want from me, Ezra?”
“Oh, nothing much,” Ezra mutters and waves me off with a weird hand gesture. “Just want you to keep in mind who you are. To remember this idea of yours will ruin you.”
For a moment, I say nothing. The words hang in the air between us. But then, with a slight smirk, I lean against the table and cross my arms in front of my chest. “Oh, no, what will I ever do now? How will I fix the big, bad mess I’ve created? Ezra, the wisest of them all, help me please, fix me.”
Ezra rolls his eyes at my words. The amusement is gone from his features, replaced by a hard look and accusatory glare. “I tried to warn you, don’t cry to me later. I’ll watch you closely, and surely, I won’t be the only one who will. And while you’re at it, whatever it is, don’t make the same mistakes your father did.”
