The guard guides me upstairs and towards the ceremony hall. There are multiple women standing at the door, chatting about something so passionately, they don’t notice us approaching.

I use the chance and start chanting “mommy” over and over again, as if signaling the guard I’ve found my mother. Thankfully, the fool is so desperate to get rid of me that he doesn’t waste the chance to nudge me towards the women.

“Go on, buddy, if your mommy is there just go and stay around her. You can’t wander the premises like you did earlier, you might get lost and no guards could be there to help you,” he mutters with a weak, understanding smile.

Instead of replying, I let more of my drool loose and nod like I understood him. The fuck, of course I did, but I can’t blow the cover just yet. I’m about to meet up with my brothers soon and I can’t do that around this guard.

“Go on, don’t be shy,” he nudges me again and I do just that. Slowly, I walk towards the group of women and just as I take the first few steps and glance over my shoulder, the guard is gone.

Brilliant. Straightening my posture, I wipe the drool off my mouth and anxiously wait for my brothers to arrive at our meeting spot. Elias comes first, looking a little pissed, but other than that, he doesn’t show much other emotion, just annoyance that he hadn’t found Ash first.

We stand aside from the little crowds gathering and watch them. All of the guests seem to be deep in their conversations, discussing something important, but none of them speak above a whisper.

While Elias is as cool as a cucumber, I grow more worried. Guests don’t form little crowds like this just to discuss whatever they are without a reason. They look like gossip circles to me and whenever those form, shit’s about to go down and I don’t like it one bit.

“Don’t you worry that something big might be happening?” I ask Elias when silence from him becomes a little too much.

In most cases, I’m happy to have someone grounded around me if I get all fussy and nervous, but right now, his calm demeanor is starting to annoy me to no end. I can’t deal with it.

“Nope. All I care about is Everett getting his ass over here, us finding Ash, which he most likely already did, and getting the fuck out of this shithole. Kaiden’s stench all over the place is making me sick to my stomach,” Elias grumbles and crosses his arms in front of his chest, making himself look even bigger than he already is.

Kind of cool, to be honest, especially since the moment those guards glance our way and their eyes set on Elias, nearly all of them pale and take a few steps back as if we’re closing in on them. My brother has an interesting effect on people and I fucking love it.

“Alrighty then,” I mumble and keep looking around.

After a few minutes, once again, I grow impatient and give into the temptation to mind-link my brother, just to find out where he is and why he is talking so much bloody time. Pisses me off.

However, as I try to reach him, many times mind you, each attempt is met with a metal barrier which means he has blocked me out and there’s no way I will get through to him.

With an ugly frown pulling at my face, I turn to Elias and arch an eyebrow, which the asshole ignores. I keep glaring at him while my brother looks around like nothing could bother him like ever.

“Come on, don’t do this to me,” I groan, breaking every restraint within me. “I don’t like being ignored and you damn well know that. Don’t be an absolute ass and pay some attention to me.” Just to emphasize how desperate I am, I grab his arm and try to hang on it with all my weight. “I need the attention so bad, I might die without it. Please, Elias, I beg you, pay me some attention.”

He rolls his eyes, typical of him, and slowly turns his head to look at me. “Are you done with your childish tantrum or should I be worried it’ll keep going on until Ash arrives and you’ll magically outgrow your toddler phase?”

I jump away from him and slap a hand over my chest. “I have no idea what you are talking about. Me, a toddler? Please, I’m a grown man, my pee-pee works perfectly fine, on command even, and I can aim like a sniper. No kid can do that.”

Elias barks out a laugh. “That’s exactly what I’m talking about, weirdo. You’re describing yourself in such a childish manner, mistaking your for an adult would be really fucking hard.”

“I’m an adult,” I insist, if only to annoy him a little more.

Truth be told, adulting fucking sucks and everyone knows that. No one has grown up just to say ‘oh, I fucking love being an adult, having to work to death and pay taxes is so fun, I really hope they’ll make my job more difficult and taxes higher, woo-hoo’.

Alright, maybe I don’t work and pay taxes yet, but I’m grown enough to know the truth behind becoming an adult and the struggles everyone has with it, so there’s no denying I know what I’m talking about.

Just as I’m about to open my mouth and annoy Elias just a little more, Everett appears in my line of vision. My eyes follow his every movement as he stalks towards us.

I can’t help but frown at him. He’s still blocking me out, so there’s no way his wolf could snitch on his thoughts to mine, so that’s a little concerning. Then, there’s the look on his face and how pale he is, and of course, how messy his hair is, which means he’s frustrated with something.

As soon as Everett stops in front of us, he doesn’t waste a second to start a conversation and just drops the biggest, most unfair bomb on us. “We’re too late. A group of bears attacked Kaiden and took Ash, no one has any idea where they took her.”
