Have you ever been hit with news so outrageous, you can’t breathe? No? Well, that’s me now.

I know Anno and I haven’t really discussed our roots to a detail, but I never expected to literally befriend an enemy.

As much as it hurts, that’s exactly what Anno is - a damn enemy. Perhaps it’s not him who held the weapons, who attacked my people and tore them to shreds, but it’s his pack, possibly his parents, sisters and brothers - all of them have the blood of my people dripping down their hands.

Nathan’s hand clutches mine, as if he’s trying to pull me out of the prison my mind has created for me. “Alpha, I beg you don’t let this information affect you negatively. The only reason why I shared this is for you to know just how close you are with the enemy. I never intended to hurt you in any way, especially by adding more baggage to the mental trauma you already have.”

He sounds genuine and sincere, but his attempt to calm me helps with nothing. He just dropped the bomb about my first, real best friend being someone who was supposed to kill me in a sense.

Taking a deep breath to ground myself, I let my eyes roam the surroundings until I can focus on something that will capture my attention. Of course, there’s nothing to distract me, just my luck.

“Well,” I breathe out the word and chuckle at the ridiculousness of this situation. “First, I get kidnapped and used as a goddamn slave by people who killed my parents, then I get rejected by a mate who also had his hand in killing my family, and now, it turns out that the closest person I have in my life is as responsible in the destruction of my life as those monsters are. Aren’t I the moon Goddesses favorite, eh?”

The chuckle that leaves him is everything but one of amusement. It’s clear the Professor is just as confused about the journey of my life as I am. What I have done to deserve this all is beyond me.

But alas, just lazing around and pitying myself won’t bring any good to me. All that’s left is to rise above everyone and try to get my life back on the right track. My parents didn’t raise a weak child, I grew up getting ready to take over an entire pack as the future Alpha, so now, I will take every bad thing as a challenge.

One day, I will prove to the Goddess herself and those who have wronged me that I am a fighter. No matter where life brings me, the position I take will be one I deserve and earn.

“You might feel like you’re alone against the whole world right now,” Nathan starts, averting his gaze. “But you must remember that no matter how hard it gets, everyone can get lost in the dead of the night. It’s those who find the light that will guide them that are strong in spirit. Sometimes, the light might be another person, but I pray to the Goddess she will remind you that you are the light, Alpha. No one else deserves the world half as much as you do. Don’t forget that.”

Thinking back to the day we first met, I could have never imagined how much humanity hides within this man’s hard exterior. He somehow finds the right words to use it seems.

All that emotional turmoil aside, I still can’t forget that there are more issues we’re all facing with this mess. One of them, if not the main issue, is the very man who rejected me.

I clear my throat to pull Nathan’s attention to me and try to force a smile, which I’m sure looks as fake as some of the love stories in the movies I used to watch.

“Okay, I suppose you mean business now. Judging by that fake smile, at least,” he mutters and shifts in his seat a little uncomfortably.

“Yes. Any idea what I should do next? I mean regarding Kaiden. Truth be told, I have no idea why he’s even here. What if he’s not looking for me after all? Aren’t we overreacting before time?”

Maybe that’s my naive nature speaking for me now.. I really want to believe that Kaiden isn’t here to mess with me, definitely not to look for me all of a sudden. Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that if you really believe something, you can convince yourself so bad, you start believing your own lies. What if I could do that now?

On one hand, it would be awesome. Less stress and worries. On the other hand, not so much. If my suspicions were to come true, I would be the darn deer caught in the headlights - completely unprepared for what would happen next.

“I don’t want to be the one who has to bring the bad news, but I don’t think that taking out any possibility would be a good idea. I rather live a simple life, led by simple principles, but there is a thing or two I learned from your parents. Alpha Kingston used to hope for the best, but he always expected the worst so he wouldn’t be caught by a surprise. Maybe we should take the same approach?” He suggests.

I ponder his words for a moment and nod. He sounds more reasonable than I do, especially in my current predicament. “So, what is the worst we might expect then? Maybe you have an idea or suspicion about why Kaiden is here? If only a slight one. I’ll take anything.”

Nathan hums, deep in thought, but it doesn’t take him long to come to a conclusion. Sort of. “Honestly, I can think of plenty of things that might warrant his sudden arrival, but I think it would be best if I went and asked around what is going on. Some of the Professors, especially magic ones, are rather nosey. I’m sure they already pulled some strings to find out why he’s here.”

“Sounds good. And what am I supposed to do in the meantime?”

He flashes me a kind smile and raises from his seat. “You, Alpha, you need to take a nap and I’m sure I’ll be here, right at your side, by the time you wake up. Let’s both hope I return with information that could benefit you, yes?”
