Gio pov

His futures fall and his face pales. Just as expected, the words that I speak are nothing like what he expected. I know, deep down, he expected the news about me finding my mate, bringing them to the pack, possibly moving into a separate housing, but nothing more than that.

Clearly, my friend didn't think I could ever leave his side. Truth be told, I'm pretty sure he thought that I would remain in this place even if he died. In a way I understand him. I really do. Other than me he has no one who would actually visit his grave, no one that would sit there for hours and talk to him.

As soon as my dear friend would be lowered down in his grave, his place would be taken by his son, which means his pack would promise their loyalty to their new leader, completely forgetting the old.

“Gio, I don't know what to say. I'm not sure how to react. This is a lot you know,” he whispers, averting his gaze.

“I understand. This is why I told you that this might not be the right time to come clean with you. But I'm glad that I did. Obviously, whatever happens next it's up to you, but I really hope you will give my words a thought. Before a king and his right hand man, we are friends. Don't forget that.” I nearly plead with him.

All I get in response is a quick, simple nod of his head and still no eye contact. I'm no fool, I know what this means - the conversation is over. He has nothing more to offer and no patience to hear me out if I have anything else to say.

So, without adding more to the mess, I get to my feet, excuse myself and head for the door.

Since there's nothing else I can do, I decided for this once I could do another silent favor to my friend. He's in no state to run after his son, so I head upstairs to find Kaden.

That little shit is probably up to something again. I know how he is whenever his father doesn't give into his commands on his whim. I also know the consequences that might follow and usually those are so bloody, it's really getting hard to clean up after him.

Kaiden loves to laugh about mine and his father's old age, but while he thinks he's all dead, us old men still have it in us. I, for one, I'm still as quick as I used to be ten years ago, so I reach the second floor in no time.

First, I check his bedroom, which turns out to be empty. Then, I go for the second option and walk towards his office. He's so predictable it's almost funny. The door is locked, as always, so it takes some intensive knocking for him to finally react and open the door for me.

I don't wait for an invitation and just stroll past him and take a seat. Kaiden looks like he's about to blow off his head in anger, but somehow he manages to hide it and justice lazily strides back to his own seat, it falls right into it.

I take a moment to take him in. Kaiden has a tell. Every time when he's up to something that wouldn't benefit anyone in his life, including himself, one of his eyebrows twitches. And I mean it twitches so much, he can't really control it, nor stop it.

“What are you up to?” I ask as I lean forward, letting him know he has my full attention.

The sly fucker grins. “oh, nothing, nothing at all.”

He's so bad at lying, I guess it's a good thing he never learned how to play poker. He'd probably lose all his fortune, the inheritance his mother left him, and the money his father still has in one game.

“And how about you stop lying to my face?” I suggest, arching an eyebrow at him.

Kaiden’s cheeks turned bright pink, the color traveling up to his ears and even down his neck. This isn't a telltale of his anger, it's one of embarrassment and annoyance. He has never liked it that I could catch him in his lies, and I suppose nothing has changed even as he grew up.

For a moment, his eyes dart everywhere but at me, almost like he's seeking a way out, looking for something to distract me and avoid this conversation. That won't happen. I've never let him off the hook this easily and I don't plan on changing that either.

“Kaiden? You are a big boy, it's about time you tell me what you're hiding. Stop acting like a toddler, your distraction tactics and temper tantrums won't work with me. It's either you tell me or I find out.”

“Fine. It's not like it's getting to have any difference that you know. I sent someone to look for my mate.” As the words roll off his tongue he almost looks smug, almost. There's this sense of uncertainty, something so wrong that I know he's not exactly lying, but he's also not telling the whole truth.

As quickly as I can, I mind-link some of the pack warriors and ask around if any of the patrols have been sent out by the Prince. One by one, all of the responses come in negative, which only proves my point, Kaiden’s not telling me the full truth.

“Okay,” I breathe out and pin him with my glare. “In that case, I suppose you won't have any issues telling me who exactly you sent to look for her. I mean, color me surprised, but I just asked around and every person came back with a negative response. All of our patrols or where they're supposed to be and none of them has been sent to the mountains, which is where we all know the bears live.”

If it's even possible, his cheeks turn bright red, I'm almost certain that all the blood in his body just traveled up to his cheeks.

In true Kaiden’s fashion, he just rolls his eyes and waves me off. “I sent a friend of mine,” he quickly responds, still not meeting my gaze.

Just as I’m about to question him some more, someone nudges on my mind-link. I open it and almost have a minor heart attack at the news. Apparently, one of our patrols has just noticed a massive group of hunters heading towards the mountains.

I excuse the warrior and order him to report on any changes. In the meantime, I focus on Kaden and start putting the pieces of this puzzle together. It’s him. This little shit sent hunters to where his mate is held by those bears.

While I know I will suffer insane consequences and probably regret the decision later on, I act on an impulse, leap over the desk and slam my fist into his smug face.
