Him pov

We hike higher up in the mountains, but I can't get rid of the feeling that we are only increasing the distance between ourselves and the girl.

The rest of the team appear unbothered by the situation and the hike that's lasting for far too long.

Me, on the other hand, I can feel the frustration build up within me. I need to get that damned girl.

Some of the guys start laughing, which prompts me to glance over my shoulder and notice a face missing. Dominic isn't here.

I stop and raise a hand, letting others know they should stop too. “Where is Dominic?” I ask, scanning the faces.

If any of them knows where the asshole went, their faces will tell me everything I need to know.

Unfortunately, neither of them appears like they noticed his absence until I pointed it out.

“Fuck,” I hiss and slap a hand on my forehead to run it down my face.

I knew I shouldn't trust him. Knew letting him roam behind the team is dangerous, and still went with it.

How stupid of me..

“Turn around, we're heading back,” I command and start walking first, ignoring the groans and grunts of displeasure.

“Wait, why? Aren't we finally getting closer to the girl? Why would we head back?” Someone calls after me.

I flip him off without checking who's the one who questions me. “Dominic is gone, a small detail you didn't notice earlier. You all know how fast the asshole is, the strength and power that pompous fuck possesses. I can bet my left foot the woman in that cabin was the one we are looking for and he kept it a secret just to get her all to himself.”

“Why would he want her?” Someone asks.

I hate speaking. Hate explaining. Hate wasting my breath on useless people even more.

“Money, of course,” one of the guys answers for me.

I won't bother to correct him. There's no point trying to guess what Dominic's intentions are, it's always easier to simply find out the truth, which is exactly what I'm planning.

He doesn't need the girl. Never mentioned anything about her, so I'm pretty sure he has no idea who she is either.

While the logical part of my brain pushes me to drop the questions until I can get the answers from the man himself, the other can't focus on anything but those stupid questions.

If only I could read minds. Fuck.

One of the guys starts running until he catches up with me and matches his pace to mine. “Hey, listen, I'm sorry, okay? I didn't pay attention to him nearly as much as I should've. I have no excuse. Just know I'll do anything in my power to stay on this team, I've grown close to you guys. Seriously, I'm sorry. It's a major fuck up, but I'll try my best to fix it.”

I roll my eyes and grunt in response. Sorries don't fix shit. Saying sorry is like cutting someone in pieces and then trying to glue the person back together with the kids band aids.

“Listen, man, I'm trying my best here. Please don't be like this. The guys already feel bad about this.” He mutters and focuses his gaze on the path, probably making sure he doesn't trip on a rock or something.

“Mind your own business, will you?” I finally snap and start walking faster, hoping to increase distance between myself and this asshole.

“Geez, what crawled up your ass and died there today? Is it a raccoon? A possum? Must be a possum, those are wild,” he slaps my shoulder and laughs as if we're some kind of friends.

Truth be told, this bunch of morons is only holding me back. Without them, I probably would have found the girl ages ago and wouldn't have lost that freak of nature either.

He is another problem of mine. Or, he's actively making himself my problem. If the superiors will find out that I lost the sight of their most prized possession, I'll be fucked.

“Why are you so pressed about him? Dominic is how he is, he wanders away, munches on whatever those freaks feed off and comes back. I'm sure he's somewhere near and won't stay away for much longer,” the moron next to me whines.

I take a moment to make a decision. Letting him in on some details won't hurt me in the slightest, but at the same time, why would I be obligated to explain myself to him to begin with?

“Come on, you don't have to be such a grump. We can be friends, the whole group. I know, for a fact, most of those guys are dying to become your friend. All of them admire you to no end and if only you bothered to say a single word to them, you'd make their goddamn year.” He keeps whining, completely missing the point.

Again, I'm not a part of this operation to find friends. I'm not here to talk about girls or discuss my taste in music. All of that is a fucking waste of time.

“I'm not too keen to build friendships,” I mumble and start walking even faster, ignoring the possible risks ahead.

Honestly, one wrong step and I could end up with a broken limb. One bad fall and I could roll down the entire trail, probably for someone to find my lifeless body at the bottom of the mountain. Or, even worse, I could fall into one of the endless voids this mountain is hiding.

None of those options is appealing to my mind, but I ignore them all and focus on what is important.

First of all, I need to get my hands on that sneaky woman. Second, I need to locate Dominic and bring him back to the general. This is his last mission, the beast will be set free, so unless he fucks up this mission, the guy is about to get the freedom he desires.

“Alright, whatever,” the fool grumbles. “I just think that you should let go of the hate inside you. Seriously, whatever it is, suck it up, you live today not in the past. Follow the same path and you'll find yourself to be an old man with more regrets he can count. Life is all about experiences, not anger.”
