Kaiden pov

Excitement bubbles up in me as I head in the direction given to me by the group of humans.

My steps turn a little jolly, so much so that I actually hop, not walk.

The only downside of the situation is that my phone keeps vibrating in my pocket and that's ruining my mood.

This is no time for silly conversations. In fact, no time for conversations at all.

It could be anyone at this point. Could be father since he finally figured out that I'm missing. Wow, it didn't take him years to notice my absence after all.

The next caller could be Scott, but his calls should be ignored for the time being too, given that father might have demanded his presence to check if I would bother to pick up his calls.

And the last, but definitely not the least pain in my ass, could be Benjamin, who's drunk off his ass and doesn't realize what nonsense he is spewing.

Since the caller is so darn persistent, I give in and reach for my phone to check who it is. Right as I look at the screen, the insistent calling stops so I can check the call log.

I have one missed call from Scott, two from my father and fifty-five from Benjamin. God damn it, the guy can't take a fucking hint.

What is wrong with him?

Just as the question crosses my mind, he calls again and this time, I answer the call.

“Fucking finally,” he snarls into the line, acting like he has some sort of power over me.

I roll my eyes and wait until he'll say something of importance rather than keep tossing stupid words around.

“Couldn't you answer my call earlier? Had to make me wait, huh? That does nothing but proves that you're a brat at heart and fuck, am I willing to break the brat in you. Making you submit will be so fun, you have no idea.”

I can hear the grin on his lips as he speaks. Since I'm pretty sure all of those words are aimed only to get a reaction from me, I give him none and press my lips in a thin line to keep the words in.

In the meantime, Benjamin keeps describing sick and filthy scenarios of what he's planning for me.

Funny, really, how he thinks he's in charge, but in reality, I could break him in half with no effort at all. The guy has forgotten that he's just a mere human while I'm a fully grown shifter, one coming from the Royal bloodline.

“And also, I don't like the teasing game you're playing with me, pretty face. Just as much as I disapprove of your silence. When I speak, you're supposed to answer me.”

I don't know which of those words eventually pushes me over the edge, but something in me snaps and I release a low, threatening growl. “Remember your place, human. You are in no position to boss me around, especially the way you wish to. The only thing you have on me is that fucking contract and claiming it's a fake isn't hard at all. I don't mind dropping the deal for good. After all, it's not me who's so desperate for money, he could drop to his knees on the side of the street and beg.”

Benjamin chuckles. “Do you have any idea how easy it is to tell that you come from a privileged background? You talk as if homeless people and beggars are below you. They're still people, regardless if they're human or shifters, still the same damn people. Just because you've been fed with a silver spoon your entire life doesn't make you any better than others.”

He falls silent for a moment, probably waiting for another outburst from my side, but I refuse to break the character again. I need to stay strong and silent.

“But, you know what?” He trails off. “I think it's fine. I don't mind teaching you a couple of things, especially if I can help to shape you into a more decent person. Yeah, I don't mind at all.”

How I haven't broken the phone in my grip is honestly beyond me.

Well, I suppose the bright side of the situation is that he's distracting me from the time as it ticks by. Walking around with nothing but my thoughts is rather daunting most of the time, but now with this fool yapping in my ear, at least I have some sort of entertainment.

He's still going on and on about how he's “going to fix my attitude” and how easily it could be for him.

I'm not ashamed to admit that some of those ideas Benjamin is tossing at me, I'm keeping them in my mind for future use when I get my runner mate back to the pack.

“Have you ever been with another man, prince? Have you enjoyed the pleasure of rough, calloused hands caressing your skin? Have you ever wondered how good it feels when strong hands grip your hips and pull you against a warm body? Have you?”

I'm not sure how, but this guy has an ability to turn more delusional and irrational with every word that leaves his lips.

At this point, he's having a conversation with himself because every question he asks, he instantly answers it too.

“Benjamin, you're overstepping any boundaries here. We are bound by a contract, you offer the service and I pay for it. That's what it is. Whatever your drunken mind has conjured up isn't real. Go lay down and sleep the buzz off, later you can call me with an update, but that's all.” I state, making an effort to sound like I'm speaking to a business partner, not a drunk moron who thinks it's a good idea to hit on me.

Why he's even doing this is what I don't understand. I've never implied I could be interested, so the guy has to be crazy.

I hear his sharp intake of breath, probably an early preparation of an onslaught of more stupidity, but I notice a little something in the distance, so I quickly end the call and shut off my phone.

A grin tugs at the corners of my lips as I rub my hands together and mutter, “showtime.”
