Elias pov

The border is just a few steps away, the invisible line on the ground that separates the unclaimed lands from the king’s territory.

I can feel the tension in the air, the sense that we’re crossing into dangerous territory, but we’ve come too far to turn back now. I glance at my brothers, their faces set with the same determination I feel burning in my chest.

“We’re almost there,” I whisper. Ethan flashes a grin, always too confident, while Everett’s expression is one of insane focus. They’re ready. So am I.

We move as one, crossing the final few feet toward the border when the sharp, sudden pull of a mind-link stops me dead in my tracks. It’s not just any mind-link, it’s mom, and I can sense the anger in her voice even before she speaks.

“Elias. Everett. Ethan. Stop. Now.”

I freeze in my tracks, my heart skipping a beat. Mom’s command pulses through my mind like a wave of ice-cold water, freezing my senses. I don’t need to look at my brothers to know they heard it too. I can feel them stiffen beside me, feel the tension ripple through the bond we share.

“Return home immediately.” Her voice is sharp, leaving no room for argument.

“What the hell?” Ethan blurts out, his frustration cutting through the silence. “We’re so close! What is she doing? How does she know we’re here? Which one of you assholes snitched?”

“Something’s wrong,” I warn him, but as always Ethan isn’t listening. He’s stuck in his own little world, able to focus only on what concerns his little mind.

“I don’t care if something’s wrong!” He snarls, glaring at the invisible barrier between us and the king’s land. “We’re not going back home. Not when we’re this close.”

“NOW,” Mom’s voice thunders through the link. Oh, she’s pissed, alright. So much so that the one word not only echoes through the mind but also hits us all with the force of a physical blow.

It has never happened before, but I literally feel the weight of her authority. She’s using her Alpha voice, and every instinct I have is screaming at me to obey. I grit my teeth, fighting against it, my body shaking with the effort to resist.

“Elias,” Everett whines in pain. He’s already halfway turned around, the command too strong for him to ignore.

I close my eyes, my hands pull into fists. I want to ignore her, to press forward and finish what we started, but the command is so overpowering, it takes over my senses and any remains of free will fade.

“Return. Now.” I can’t fight it anymore. With a frustrated snarl, I turn around and start back the way we came, my brothers falling into step beside me.

Ethan mutters curses under his breath the whole way, his face pulled in an ugly frown, while Everett moves silently, his eyes distant, lost in thought.

The moment we step through the door of our parent's house, our mother is waiting for us, her arms crossed in front of her chest, and the anger I see burning in her eyes is something I never expected to see. Our father stands beside her, looking equally pissed off.

Once I fully process the looks on their faces, I stop dead in my tracks, swallowing hard. This is not going to be pleasant.

“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” Mom starts off first, her voice lower than usual, meaning her wolf is most likely on the surface. “Running off without a word, throwing yourselves into danger without a single thought for what we agreed?”

“We had to act,” I try to explain. “We’re losing time. Ash is-”

“You had to act?” Dad interrupts, his tone even colder than mom’s, which is awfully unusual of him since mom’s the serious one and dad’s always been the fun parent. “You think you’re the only ones who care about her safety? The only ones who can fix this?”

“We’re not waiting around while the Council plays politics!” Ethan hisses. “Three days, Mom? You really think the Council’s going to fix everything in three days?”

“That was the agreement,” Mom snaps, her eyes zeroing in on us like we’re some criminals, not her sons. “The Council was given three days to get the king to see reason, and as Alpha, I will keep my word. Your father will too. Don’t think you’ll get away with this just because Dad’s near. He’s just as angry and disappointed as I am.”

“Yeah? Well, your word doesn’t mean a lot if Ash gets dragged into that mating ceremony!” Ethan throws his hands up in frustration. “Do you have any idea what’s going to happen if we just sit back and play with our cocks while she’s being forced into an arrangement she didn’t want to begin with?”

“Language, Ethan. You’re talking to your mother, not some peasant,” my father growls, his voice dangerously low. “We are giving the Council the time they asked for. You, on the other hand, have decided to act like reckless children, charging into the king’s territory without any plan.”

“Oh, there’s a plan,” Ethan says with a sarcastic smile. “Step one: don’t die. Step two: find Ash. Step three-”

“Enough!” Mom’s voice cuts through the room, silencing Ethan’s rant. “You will not speak to us like that, Ethan. You may be strong, but you are not the Alpha. And might never be, if this is how you plan to act for the rest of your life.”

Ethan snaps his mouth shut, eyes burning in anger equal to that of our parents, but he doesn’t argue. I watch him carefully, waiting for the explosion that never comes. He’s mad, really mad, but for once, he’s holding his tongue.

Everett stands slightly to the side, his face neutral, his eyes darting between my parents and us. He’s always hated these confrontations, unsure where he fits when the family starts to argue. He’s the muscle, the one who fights for what’s right, but right now he’s caught between loyalty to his brothers or parents.

I clear my throat and take a step forward. “Mom, listen to me. We ran into Axel. He mentioned something very important.”

She raises an eyebrow, most likely expecting a bullshit excuse. “What did he say?”

“He said the king is planning a mating ceremony,” I explain, forcing myself to meet her gaze to show how serious I am. “For Kaiden. It’s happening soon, and Ash is supposed to be at the center of it.”

The room goes so silent and tense that I feel uncomfortable standing there. Mom’s face pales slightly, and dad’s expression hardens, his jaw clenching.

“A mating ceremony?” Mom reapers, her voice softening. “Are you sure?”

“Positive,” I nod. “Whatever game the king is playing, he’s about to make his move. And if the Council doesn’t act in time, it’s going to be too late. I know, for a fact, that the Council is already in the king’s territory.”

“We have to act,” Ethan perks up. “Mom, dad, you can’t just stand there and let them do this. The Council’s a bunch of old fools, they’re not going to save my Ash. We have to do something.”

Mom’s eyes focus on Ethan. I can see she’s struggling to choose. She has to make a step and right now, it’s either doing the right thing by her son’s or following the protocol and letting the Council have their time. She’s stuck between being an Alpha or mother first.

“Elias is right,” she finally voices her decision.  “We need more information. If what you’re saying is true, the Council probably already knows everything. If they don’t do something,” she releases a low, threatening snarl. “Then we will.”
