Nathan’s eyes widen at the same time as mine do. Have I even mentioned that there are three men I’m fated to and they happen to be the very brothers I’m forced to share living space with?

No matter how hard I try to, I can’t recall any of the conversations we have had this far. Some snippets, a word or two, but not full discussions with meanings or the topics of them.

“New mates for you? Have I missed something?” Nathan jumps to his feet and quickly sits on the edge of the bed to lean closer to me and whisper. “My apologies, Alpha, but I don’t recall you even mentioning this fact. If the Goddess has blessed you with second chance mates, it changes everything.”

After taking a few breaths to calm down, I look at my lap and mutter, “but it doesn’t explain why Kaiden is still looking for me. He rejected me.”

Nothing makes sense anymore. Every time I promise myself to be strong and keep pushing, something comes in between me and the goal to set me back even further. It’s like life can’t help but keep tossing stupid challenges my way.

Am I really that darn amusing to whoever is responsible for my destiny? Or did the Goddess hand the puppet of me to the wrong person to get me off her hands?

Nathan clears his throat. “Can you tell me how did that happen? I understand this might be too much, but the more details I learn, the easier it will be for me to put the story together and help you figure everything out.”

I understand why he is so curious. Just the same as I understand why he keeps asking me for details, but the understanding doesn’t make talking about everything any bit easier.

There are some memories everyone wants to bury in the past and I happen to have far too many of those.

I would rather forget the darkest parts of my past and pretend they never happened, but I know that’s an out everyone wants. Facing my demons head-on would be far better. Once and for all, just dealing with them and after, I could leave them in the past for good.

“Do we have enough time?” I whisper and glance at the door. The moment my eyes focus on it, cold shivers run down my spine, as if my senses are screaming that I’m looking straight into the eyes of danger.

Whoever is that man Nathan claims is his mate has to be a very dangerous and scary person. I get bad, very bad vibes from that direction even without seeing the guy in person.

Yes, it’s official, I don’t like this mess. Even a single bit.

“I think we do. Gio promised me privacy,” Nathan mutters and chuckles. “I know this doesn’t seem like lots of privacy with him basically standing guard at the door, but that’s the best I can do for now. He’s rather clingy.”

Despite the messed up situation, I find Nathan’s words and attitude amusing. He doesn’t realize that the guy is kind of growing on him already.

Maybe it would be best if I offered him to leave after all? Not to keep Kaiden away from me, but for all the right reasons?

The same as me, Nathan has been through a lot and he deserves to be happy. He deserves to wake up in the morning with the thought that life is worth living. No more ghosts of the past, betrayals and regrets.

Just a clean, beautiful start with someone who would love him to the end of the world.

“Hey,” I choke out, holding back the tears. Just because I know I want to do the right thing doesn’t make it any easier. My hand trembles as I carefully place it over Nathan’s and whisper, “maybe you should go? Start from a clean page and all that? Don’t shut me down, just think about it. What if meeting him is what the Goddess really wanted to happen? What if this is fate, not just a coincidence?”

I can feel the frustration radiate off Nathan, sense how angry he is getting and so can the man behind the door, because the next moment, it swings open and a very pissed-off caveman storms inside.

The moment his eyes focus on us, they dart to my hand over Nathan’s and I instinctively pull it away, as if his skin just burned me.

The growl that leaves the scary man is powerful enough to shake the windows and I swear, if he doesn’t get away, I might pee the bed. That’s exactly how freakishly scary he is.

“What the fuck!” He screams at the top of his lungs.

As soon as he opens his mouth to say something more, Nathan raises his hand to stop him and snarls, “act like that once more, just one bloody time, and enjoy getting your ass rejected. I will never tolerate disrespect like one you’re showing to me and my closest friend right now. You’re on a thin line, Gio, don’t fucking cross it unless you want to test me.”

Gio’s eyes widen, his bottom lip trembles and the next moment, he drops on his ass and crosses his arms in front of his chest like a child who’s throwing a full blown tantrum. “Fine.” He grumbles, clearly unhappy. “But I’m not moving from here, not when I catch my mate being held by another man.”

Natha rolls his eyes. “Get out.”

I expect resistance and arguments, but instead, Gio’s face falls and he quickly scrambles to his feet to get out of the room. He glares at me for the effect and the expression on his face softens only when he looks at Nathan and adds, “I told you I can be good and I’m proving that right now. See, you told me to leave and I’m leaving. Top tier behavior. Just.. Just don’t cheat on me. Don’t choose some measly little boy over your mate. Don’t do that to me. Please.”
