The king pov

“My king!” I hear someone shout in the distance and soon after, frantic footsteps echo through the hall leading to my office. “My king, are you there?” The voice calls again, this time way closer than previously.

Slowly, I set down the pen, let out a breath and prepare myself for another onslaught of issues. It seems issues are the only thing I'm experiencing these days.

As I slide away the document I was inspecting, the frantic footsteps stop at my door and I take a deep breath before the knock echoes through the office.

“My king, are you there? May I come in?” It's one of my advisors. Weirdly, I only recognize his voice now.

Must be because for years, the advisor's position has been taken just for the sake of it. Whenever I needed advice or help with something, I went to Gio. Well, not I can't go to him, can I?

Clearing my throat, I focus my gaze on the door and speak up. “Come in.”

He hesitates for a moment, but eventually, enters the office and bows so low, I seriously wonder if he's about to latch onto my ass to kiss it for eternity.

Whatever is going on is serious enough for him to become this frantic and submissive.

“Close the door and take a seat,” I instruct, motioning towards the seat across from me.

He gulps and nods his head. As he moves around, I instantly notice how badly his hands are shaking and the sweat breaking out on his forehead.

That catches my attention for good, so I place my forearms on the desk and lean forward, waiting until he'll be ready to explain whatever is going on.

When he finally lowers himself into the seat, his eyes start darting everywhere but at me, as if he's trying to avoid eye contact at all costs.

“I apologize for barging in without prior notice, my king. I understand my behavior is very disrespectful, but I mean no disrespect, I swear I really don't. However, there is something very important I must alert you about.” He stutters the words, sounding like he's really struggling to explain himself.

I arch an eyebrow, but remain silent. Sometimes it's the best approach - just sitting aside quietly, listening and not showing any emotion, which in turns adds more anxiety to the person who's speaking and there's a bigger chance they might slip up with something.

Unfortunately, my approach doesn't work the same wonders it usually does. This time, the advisor keeps looking around and acting all sorts of sketchy instead of speaking up.

Is he really waiting for the very moment I'll give him permission to speak? Since when is that a bloody thing?

With a loud, annoyed sigh, I run my fingers through my hair and close my eyes to calm down a little. It's enough my son is a little crazy and attacks everyone left and right, we don't need me to act the same as he does.

“Please, advisor, rip off the bandage and speak up. I have plenty of things on my schedule and while I'm sharing my time with you right now, in holding myself back from fulfilling my primary responsibilities. I need to know whatever it is that you wanted to bring to me so I can focus on the alliance paperwork again.” I speak with my eyes closed so I can't see the way his facial expressions change.

What I can sense, however, is how much stronger the fear and anxiety radiates off him.

I said something that triggered his nerves, so at least he'll feel obligated to let me know what's on his mind.

“My king, all I ask of you, if I may, of course, is to remember that I am but a messenger, so please don't kill me. I have a family, a mate and a newborn pup, they need me.”

Oh, right, I think I heard about his mate giving birth recently, but I didn't have time or enough interest in his life to actually check the validity of the statement.

Goddess, I should've asked around and sent him a basket of sweet shit and well wishes cards. I used to do that years ago, long before Kaiden was born.

I still remember how eager I used to be to serve my people, to become the king they all wanted and deserved. After the death of my mate, however, I lost that drive to be better.

I'm just an old, tired and very lonely man who can't wait for the day when the Goddess finally reunites our souls in a different life.

“Okay,” I mutter and let out a heavy sigh, opening my eyes to look at him and bracing myself for the possible worst scenario.

“Okay,” he parrots and takes a deep breath himself. “First of all, I must emphasize that the news I'm bringing are, for now, only based on a rumor level. However, as your personal advisor, I would advise you to not take them lightly as there's always some truth to any rumor we hear. Since the information isn't proven completely valid yet, I still find it concerning enough to keep our eyes on the matter.” He quickly trails off, waiting for my reaction.

I arch an eyebrow and nod. “Very well. Carry on, what is this information about?”

“Possibly the very paperwork you were working on prior to my arrival, my king. It concerns the alliance itself.”

“Consider me very interested,” I quickly add and lean closer to him, showing that he has all of my attention.

“There is a rumor that the council of Elders have visited a pack that isn't a part of the alliance in order to start peace negotiations. The pack is preparing for war.” He whispers the last part, as if he fears his own words.

A growl rips out of me as I send the paperwork flying. “Fucking Sorrentinos’, still giving me trouble!” I jump to my feet and start pacing the office, thinking about anything that could be done in this situation. “Where is Kaiden? Has he been alerted about the current situation?”

“My king, I tried to approach the prince first, but he's nowhere to be found. Even the servants don't know where he has gone.”

Great, so now I'm facing a possible war that might tear my pack to shreds and on top of that, my son has gone missing. Fuck my life.
