Mated to alpha triplets at all-boys school Chapter 45
Ashley pov
Soon after Ethan leaves the room, my eyes shoot open and I suck in a deep, greedy breath. Only after he is no longer that close to me do I realize how much I struggle to breathe in his presence.
This whole mate mess is becoming more real with every day that passes. What is worse is that with every moment I spend anywhere near the triplets, staying away is becoming harder than before.
While I would prefer to have some time to think about everything, I’m actually grateful to see Nathan enter the hospital room. Staying alone with my thoughts doesn’t sound like a tempting scenario.
However, once I notice the look on his face, my heart rate instantly picks up.
Clearly, he is insanely worried about something, if not scared too.
“What’s wrong?” I ask and sit up in the bed, a little surprised I don’t choke on the words.
Nathan shakes his head and sits down, eyes trained on the floor. I’m tempted to ask more questions, but instead, I give him a moment to gather his thoughts and speak whenever he’s ready.
Waiting sucks, it truly does, but lately I have learned that it’s best for most situations. Just bombarding someone with questions overwhelms them and makes the situation way worse than before.
“Don’t act surprised and don’t look at the door,” Nathan mumbles.
Great, now I want to act surprised and look at the door. Whatever happened while he was away can’t be good judging by how he looks right now.
“There’s a man on the other side of the door. Let’s call him problem two. I wish I could call him the little problem, but that, excuse my language, motherfucker, is nothing close to small.” Nathan mutters, his shoulders instantly tensing.
I arch an eyebrow, but don’t comment. Everything he has to tell me will eventually come to light, that much even I know.
“I wish we could open a pack link now that I have found you, but that’s too much risk right now. Everyone will realize a pack has been formed inside these premises and that will blow our cover, so we can’t use the mind-link for now.”
“For now?” I can’t help but whisper. What does the for now mean? Is he planning to pull off something completely insane?
Nathan slowly lifts his head to look at me and flashes me what I assume he thinks looks like a reassuring smile. For the record, that looks nothing close to reassuring. A little scary, perhaps, but not reassuring.
“Yes, for now. For as long as you need to keep your cover here and stay in the Academy, nobody can know that we come from the same pack. Once you seek out the Goddess and announce you are ready to reclaim the title you were supposed to receive from your parents, it’s an end game. Everyone will know.” He explains and looks over his shoulder.
My eyes dart to the door on instinct, but I manage to catch myself and quickly avert them. Whoever is behind that door has to be someone pretty dangerous if the Professor is acting this strangely all of a sudden.
As I ponder his words, I realize there is something that really peaks my interest. “What exactly do you mean when you say problem two?”
“Well,” he sighs and looks at the floor again. “Don’t get me wrong, this shit came as a surprise to me too, but apparently, I have a mate. Never thought I would have one after the promises I made to the Goddess. Anyway, he’s here and the problem part starts with the detail that he came with Kaiden. He’s someone extremely close to the royal family and he’s insisting that they are leaving soon so I have to follow him.”
I feel like a wall of bricks just came crashing down on me. I just met Nathan, just found out how important he is and I’m about to lose him? Just like that? Scratch the doubt and cautiousness, I still need him close.
“Don’t let my words get to me. See, no matter how much I want to remain around you, I don’t think I have a way to do that. I know I sound completely insane, but by agreeing to follow that barbaric man, at least I can keep them away from you.”
My hand reaches out to him and grabs his shoulder. I shake Nathan a little to break the haze he’s clearly stuck in. “No. You just told me they’re leaving soon. Why would you follow him if he has to leave anyway?”
“I fear there might not be another chance given the information I found out just now.”
As Nathan looks at me again, his eyes are filled with tears, clearly showing just how much he doesn’t want to leave my side.
I brace myself for the worst, take a deep breath and nod my head, a silent encouragement for him to tell me more.
“Gio, the man who claims to be my mate, he told me why Kaiden is here. That’s problem number one, the big one. They’re looking for you, Alpha. From what I gather, he didn’t get the throne, there’s no power for him to get his hands on until he finds you. The king insists there’s no chosen queen if the guy has a fated one. Royals want pure bloodline, powerful heirs and that’s something only a true mate can give them.”
My heart drops in time with my hand from his shoulder. The room around me starts spinning and I struggle to breathe, as if my lungs are protesting every movement.
“No,” I manage to choke out as tears start streaming down my cheeks. Call me dramatic, but this truly is one of the worst moments of my life.
Nathan tries to soothe me, to tell me everything will be okay and he will get them away from me, but somehow, between the jumbled mess of words and thoughts, I’m hit with yet another heavy realization.
I wipe the tears off my cheeks and look at him. “That’s impossible. The Goddess already assigned new mates for me. How is this possible? How did this happen?”
