Gio pov

The first hour in the cells felt like the worst hour of my life. I couldn't get past the mental block, created by the good memories I once shared with the king. The memories that reminded me of why I called him my best friend for so many years.

I've done nothing but stood by his side and ensured he would never get hurt. I became his closest friend, his only confidant and the shield he could use wherever he wished or needed to.

And this is how I get rewarded for my years of service. At the end of the day, I'm nothing but a follower in his eyes. Kaiden was right. I hate to admit this, but the little fucker was so right it actually hurts.

The guards are doing their best to entertain me, but I couldn't be bothered to listen to them ramble. Just because they have made it clear that they're on my side doesn't make my situation any bit better.

“Gio, maybe you want to play cards?” One of the guards asks, nudging my side like we're lifelong buddies.

I shake my head and keep glaring at my feet. We've been sitting on the bed for hours and all this time, both of them have been trying to come up with some sort of entertainment.

“I'd much rather be left alone with my thoughts. I need to process this, not to distract myself with pleasant stuff,” I admit.

“Can’t do that, sorry,” the guard mutters. “The order was to look after you, even if we really did toss you in one of those cells. But don’t worry, the king is a reasonable guy, I’m sure he will come down here soon enough and deal with the misunderstanding.”

I can't help but laugh at the absurdity of his words. I don't even laugh; I just snort out a sound that resembles laugh. My shoulder slump as I shake my head in disbelief. “There is no misunderstanding here. I attacked his son, for a good reason of course, but I still did. Tell me, how is that a misunderstanding? How can you fix something like that? Damn it,” I growl and run my hand through my hair, “I was so close. So close, in fact, that I could taste the freedom. And now, I lost it all. One stupid mistake, one time I can't hold back my temper, and I'm done.”

The guard slaps his hand on my shoulder and tries to shake me a little. “No, it's fine, Gio. Everything is going to be fine. Just remember that you two are best friends, have been for ages, and as much as you want to deny it, even his son isn't as close to the king as you are.”

I just roll my eyes at his words. I get that he's trying to uplift my mood, really trying to make me feel better about this situation, but that feels like an impossible mission.

At the end of the day, I'm down here like some criminal, while Kaiden remains in his office, is probably helped by the doctors and the king himself is most likely running around his baby acting like a doting father.

“This time I fucked up really bad. This is the one time that I should have kept my temper in check, but he pushed me too far. I don't regret what I did. He had it coming. But unfortunately, life isn't fair, so I'm the one left picking up the pieces. Just look at me, I'm suffering the consequences while the one who's at fault for this whole mess is walking around free, almost unharmed.”

I look up at the ceiling and wonder how much different my life would be if I wouldn't have done anything. Funny part is that if the king found out what his son did, and if I didn't react at all, the king would still blame me.

So yeah, whether I attacked him or not, it would still be my fault.

“Is there anything I can do to make you feel better? I already told you, the guards and most of the people are on your side. We all respect you; we love you, and we don't want to see you suffering. If this pack operated on the voting system, trust me, Kaiden would never step close to the throne. It would be you, who would lead us. Most of us don't want him to have more power than he already does.”

“Honestly? There's nothing you or anyone else can do. Before this happened, I had a private discussion with the king, during which he promised that I could be excused from my duty soon.” I mutter, unsure if sharing the details would do me any good.

“What do you mean, excused from your duties? Where are you planning to leave the pack for good?” The guard gasps.

I'm not surprised by his reaction, every person around here is convinced that I would always be around. Some of them think that I'm immortal, that I would still serve the next king even when their grandchildren and great grandchildren would live.

“Yeah, I was. During one of those outings with Kaiden, I met my mate. He wants nothing to do with the king and this pack, and as much as I love my home and respect my best friend, I refuse to sacrifice my mate for all of this. As you can see, if things were different, I would still have made the right choice. Now, all that's left is to sit here and wait. I would much rather be with him, then stuck in cells.” I explain and finally look at the guard.

The poor guy looks shocked beyond limits. “Wait, so you asked if you could be excused from your duties, and told him that it's because of your mate, right?”

I don't see a point in this question, but I still nod. That's exactly what I was telling him. He frowns. “That makes no sense.”

I'm a little taken aback. Everything I just said makes perfect sense.

Before I can ask him anything, the guard jumps to his feet and runs a hand through his hair. “You know that it's illegal, right? I mean the king, not excusing you immediately. By law, he's obligated to release you as soon as you find your mate and decide to continue the relationship outside of your territory. Gio, I know you're a good guy, but how did you manage to forget the most basic things of the law we follow?”
