Ashley pov

Constantine pulls me into a quick, tight hug and lets out a shuddering breath, not bothering to hide how scared he is. “Be safe, little bug, be safe.” He mutters and releases me.

The last, for now, I see of him is how his friend pulls Constantine away. He’s not even fighting, looking completely defeated, following the guy who came to warn us.

There’s some shuffling around me, but eventually, the sounds fade and I’m left standing alone, surrounded by nothing but a deafening silence. That, however, doesn’t last long as a few minutes later, there’s a knock on the door.

I grab a half empty cup of coffee in my hand, ruffle my hair and pull a face, making it seem like I just woke up. My heart is raging in my chest, but for now, I’m putting all of my hope on the ability to appear as close to a regular human as I can.

Technically, this should work. Even if they have shifters around them, they shouldn’t be able to smell my wolf. She’s never been a strong presence in my life and for the most part, she hides away from me and others. Although I come from a strong bloodline of Alphas, many have told me before that I don’t smell like one, let alone a wolf at all.

Sucking in a sharp breath, I tighten my hold around the cup and slowly approach the door. “W-who’s there?” I call out, purposely stuttering to appear scared.

I need to play my part here. I’m supposed to be scared, especially if I’m just a simple human girl on a hike, alone in the mountains, with nobody around and definitely not expecting anyone.

“Ma’am, good evening. We’re just a group of local rangers, doing our rounds in this area. Since we didn’t have any information about this cabin being rented for a night or more, we are obligated to check on the guests and the cabin itself.” A man explains in a gruff voice.

I get on my tippy-toes to check who’s standing there through the peephole. Never thought those are needed in remote cabin doors, but Goddess, am I grateful to have one here.

And sure enough, there are no rangers at the door. There is, however, a whole crowd of men, all dressed in black from top to bottom, sporting some serious looking weapons in their hands.

“Okay, but what do you have the weapons for? I’m on a hike, alone, and I shouldn’t really give you these details but I’m scared and I want to know. Seriously, I’m about to call the police, this isn’t funny,” I rant, still keeping my eye on them.

The so-called rangers exchange glances. I’m not stupid, I know they’re the hunters. Best part is that they don’t realize that I can hear them even when they whisper, so when one of them speaks up, I almost break the character and burst out laughing.

“The police? Why would a shifter try to call the police? Where’s Dominic, I need him to sniff around,” the man grumbles, looking over his shoulder to I assume find this Dominic guy.

Eventually, time drags out as someone finally approaches the guy at the door. I can’t put my finger on it, but I’m certain I’ve seen this guy before. I mean, I swear he looks familiar, but I don’t understand why.

“Sniff the fucking door and tell me if we’re at the right place. I swear, if that’s a human in there, I’m about to fuck up the bratty prince. The fuckhead sent us in the wrong direction.” The one, who I assume has to be the leader of this operation, whisper-hisses.

Dominic leans closer to the door and sniffs it. His eyes widen, just for a fraction, but it looks like not only he caught on to my actual scent, but he also recognizes it. Great, so I’ve really met him before, but when? And where?

To my utter surprise, Dominic takes a step back and shakes his head. “I can’t believe this, but we’re at the wrong place. The woman inside the cabin is human.” He says, not sparing a glance in my direction.

Before any of them can utter a word, I speak up again. “I have a phone in my hand, if you don’t leave, I’ll call 911 and get the police here. You have no business being here!”

“Our apologies, ma’am, it seems we have approached the wrong cabin. Our friend here checked the records just now and it actually shows the cabin has been rented. There’s no need to call for the police, we will leave and let you enjoy your time here. Again, our sincere apologies.” The leader forces the words through gritted teeth, clearly unhappy.

I know it’s far too soon, but I already feel the first waves of relief washing over me even before the men have actually left the area. Just the thought of getting rid of them without involving Constantine and his bear brothers brings me an immense sense of relief. The last thing I want is to put them in danger.

I keep peeking through the door as the hunters shove each other around, visibly pissed and start leaving past the cabin in the direction that seems to bring them further into the woods. The guy, Dominic, who I assume has to be a shifter, glances over his shoulder and winks at me, as if he knows I’m still looking.

Damn it, I definitely must know him from somewhere. But where?

I stand at the door completely frozen, holding my breath and waiting until the coast is clear so I can tell the bears to get out of their hiding places, but when a hand lands on my shoulder, I barely hold in the scream that threatens to tear out of me. Spinning on my heel, I let out a sigh when I come face to face with Constantine and notice his brother slowly crowd around us.

I have no idea what they are up to, but the looks on their faces lets me know they’re all speechless, their jaw dropped, eyes wide in surprise.

“I don’t know how you did it, but you just saved our lives,” Constantine mutters. I frown at him. I didn’t do much, only trick the hunters. I think. Seeing the look on my face, he pulls me into a tight hug and mutters. “Dominic is a beast. He isn’t even a shifter and definitely not a human. He’s something in between, not this or that, something insanely dangerous. Whenever Dominic joins the hunt, it turns into massacre. You saved us, Ash, you saved us all.”
